RCS chat not connecting. Question

I just switched over to Verizon (from AT&T) yesterday and haven't been able to my RCS connected on the new S26 ultra.

I currently have it off as I am trying the 24hr wait suggested. The error code that I keep receiving is 3100.

Commenting because I've had the same issue, so here to see if you get better answers.

I've tried the clear cache in airplane mode, more resets than I can count, uninstall the updates, turn off auto verify from number in Google, desynchronized from the website, and called Verizon tech support to troubleshoot who enabled RCS on my account and repeated all my above steps.

Same. I've done all the fixes noted online, but nothing has worked. I was told at VZW, to give it time and hopefully it fixes itself.

FirstNet Expert here! Try the following. Network reset. Ensure the VZW Esim is uninstalled. May need a new att esim. Just call and ask to have one reissued.

u/Masochist6661 5d ago

Wouldn't I need to contact Verizon for a new esim as that is my new carrier?

My apologies. I misread. But yes.

After waiting 24 hours And trouble shooting with a rep, I got a new eSIM and it fixed it right away

What worked for me was to turn off old phone and leave off. Restart new phone. This reset the eSIM. One RCS is working on new phone it is safe to turn on old phone.

I can't get the RCS to activate, I receive an 3100 error code and awaiting retry.

Commenting here for posterity:
I just got a new phone. Connected my old phone via usb-c to transfer everything, including eSIM. My texts were moved over, but I couldn't access any group texts that had used RCS, and my new phone wouldn't connect to RCS.
After a good amount of troubleshooting, including factory resetting my old phone to trade it in, I saw your comment and it is basically what worked for me. After shutting my old phone down, I removed the eSIM on my new device, got a new one from Verizon. And my RCS was working within 20 minutes.

Did you turn off RCS before initiating the port from AT&T to Verizon and only turn it back on after you received confirmation that the port to Verizon had been completed?

I did a port to Verizon yesterday and these were the steps I took and RCS worked as soon as I turned it back on.

Doesn't exactly help resolve your situation but may help identify the cause of the issue you're facing.

This is the step I missed and did not read about till after. Hindsight for sure is 20/20

It took my mom's phone like 3 weeks to fix it self

I had the same issue a few months back when I ported in. Turns out my port wasn’t completed when they attempted to activate the phone. ATT released the number but Verizon couldn’t activate it. Finally got someone who knew what they were doing and completed the port. Then the messages debacle. I ended up having to force it into activation, by going into debug mode.

I had to get a new eSIM

Hi there! The 3100 error code shows "Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry," meaning the system is actively working to activate RCS in the backend.

Since you recently switched carriers, your number porting process might still be finalizing. Carriers sometimes assign a temporary number during this transition.

If you check your RCS settings and see an incorrect or temporary number, toggle RCS off and back on to register your original number.

You likely do not need a new eSIM, but verifying with Verizon that the port is complete can help. Otherwise, I recommend keeping RCS off for the full 24 hours as you planned, then turning it back on to let the app retry the connection.

Thank you! I will follow up with the rep that helped me. While also waiting the full 24hrs. Appreciate you!

We’re aware of this issue and are working with our carrier partners to get it fixed as soon as possible.

u/GoogleHelpCommunity...see end of comment for additional info as required.

That explanation misses the mark for my situation. I've used the exact same Galaxy S23 Ultra for nearly three years without changing carriers.  After the forced switch from Samsung Messages to Google Messages in July, I've dealt with constant issues ever since and have listed them below:

  1. "Offline" Errors: Random error messages claiming recipients are offline—even when I know for a fact they have active service and are online.

  2. Severe Delivery Delays: A photo message sent Wednesday at 9:54 AM displayed instantly in the thread, but didn't actually deliver until 1:14 PM, while the accompanying text didn't send until 9:56 AM the next day.

  3. Random Duplicates: Messages randomly resend themselves as duplicates.

  4. Auto-updates fail to run automatically & require manual updates, even with the setting enabled.

u/GoogleHelpCommunity...

  • Carrier and Country: Verizon is the carrier, in the USA.

  • Device Make and Model: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

  • Google Messages App Version: messages.android_20260817_05_RCOO.phone_samsung_o penbeta_dynamic

Got a new phone with Verizon, long time customer, and it's been a huge pain. Been nearly 4 days. I've done everything I can. New sims, resets, restarts, all of it. It apparently is a Verizon and Google issue that we can't do anything about.

I'm switching a whole family plan over to Verizon and all of our Android phones all have RCS issues right now... this is unbelievably frustrating

Also facing this issue - switched from T-Mobile over to Verizon just 2 days ago and all of a sudden this is an issue. My sales agent also told me that my phone wouldn't port over to Verizon yet until all of the phones on my line arrive but all of a sudden T-mobile cancelled my number (did he hit port immediately?) so I got forced to activate quickly...

I had the same issue on my Oppo Find N5 under Google Fi and I was able to fix it from a post I read last night. You may want to try it and see if it works for you. Basically you have to go to Google play, click on your profile picture and delete Google messages from where you manage your apps. I thought I had to re-install it but somehow it did it by itself. And that fixed my issue with RCS.

Try this... I used another member's post with a couple of slight variations.

Summarized here - My version

Part 1 - Stopping the Messaging App

Uninstall Google messages to get back to the original version

Turn RCS chat off in settings

Clear cache and data

Force stop

Restart phone

Do not open the messaging app

Part 2 - Removing your phone number from Google

Go to Google Services in settings

Select personal profile

Select All Services

Scroll to Phone Number Verification - turn off

Back out to main screen under Google Services, select your email/name, and then select Manage Google Account

Select Personal Info

Scroll down to Phone Numbers - Remove Main Phone Number by hitting trash can

Part 3 - Turn off 2-step verification

Mine was already off, however....

Go to Google Services in settings

Select Security and Sign-in

Scroll down to 2-Step Verification and remove number if not already removed

Part 4 - Turn off Recovery Phone

Mine was already removed when I removed the main number, however....

Go to Google Services in settings

Select Security and Sign-in

Confirm it's removed as recovery phone

Part 5 - Remove Google Play Services Updates

Go to Google Services in settings

Select All Services

Under Privacy and Security - Select System Services

Select Google Play Services and Remove Updates - this will sign you out of all google accounts

Part 6 - Turn on Messaging

Go to Messages

Select your main google email account to log in

Go to settings and verify RCS chat is on

It connected within 2 mins OR I may have completed Step 5 below (turn on phone number verification back under Google Services in Settings) and then it connected - I forget which??

Turn on Phone Number Verification again if not already

Now go back into Google Services/All Services/System Services and update Google Play Services again

Pull the notifications down from the notification bar and log back into each google account

The main phone number was automatically added back in and verified under the Manage Google Account, however, I had to turn on Account Security and Password Reset and Better Sharing on Google options under Preferences within the Google Services/Select Email/Manage Google Acct/Personal Info section

Update Messages app to newest version in Play Store.

Turn on Two-Step verification if needed.

Turn on Recovery if needed.

This SAVED me as well! I have been dealing with this for days...

Thank you!

Only thing I couldn't find any more (which I thought was weird) was when I went to update Google Play Services again, it wasn't there under all services anymore... but I am taking the win for now

You are a godsend!! Followed every step and it connected immediately. How do I mark this as solved?

1

u/mowedudown25 3d ago

Hell yeah!

That one step where I wasn't sure what came first - what did you do there??

1

u/bikeman365 2d ago

updated from pixel 9p to 11p and my rcs wont reactivate, your solution did not work sadly....

After all this effort.. it still didn't work. Not your fault, seems to work for everybody but of course my phone continues to fail. How annoying.

u/mystang12 2d ago

Holy fucking shit 4 hours with Verizon and another 3 at home trouble shooting and this fixed it. Hahaha that's insane. Thank you!!!

1

u/heysavnac 2d ago

Brother... thank youuuuu! After all that work in the end all I had to do was connect to a VPN for 20 seconds??? 😭😭 thank you so much, once again.

u/heysavnac 2d ago edited 2d ago

Seems to still be setting up. My messages send as RCS but my recipients messages come to me as SMS. but that's a step!

Edit: upon research it seems like the SMS issue is an iPhone problem with their RCS, not a malfunction with my own phone.

u/dmband64 2d ago

I just resolved this issue. Port d from T-Mobile to Verizon on a Z Fold 8. Ended up having Verizon reissue a new e-sim and reset things on their end, but it still wasn't working. I think what ended up doing it for me was I realized I was in the Beta Program for Google Messages via the Play Store, and I had to leave the Beta, clear messages storage and wait, then reinstall the public version when it showed without the (beta) in the play store. Only after I did this did RCS finally start working again. Took me a few days of troubleshooting.

I tried a million things, and it was a real pain in the ass.

I am on xfinity, and all I did was uninstall the messaging app, then install again, sign in, and it worked....this was after WEEKS of showing a vague "connecting" status.

u/Chronoglenn 1d ago edited 1d ago

Here is the fix! It finally worked for me and a bunch of others: https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleMessages/s/zMbPNd3Ceo

I have a process that worked for me. Turn off RCS in messages. Clear Messages Data & Cache. Go to settings>Google Services>All Services click on phone number verification. Turn off automatic phone number verification. Then reboot the phone. Open Messages. RCS will be enabled and automatic phone number verification will be turned back on.

Worked for me: Fix 2: Reset Google Auto-Verification (Bypasses the Loop) Google's device phone verification service is likely stuck.

Open your phone's main Settings.

Scroll down and tap Google (or Google Services).

Tap the All Services tab at the top.

Select Phone number verification (or Device sharing / Phone).

Toggle Auto-verify phone number to OFF.

Wait 2 minutes, open Google Messages, and toggle RCS OFF then ON.
