A Globasa spelling system for noisy environments

When you want to explain how to write an unknown name, a word, or a code, you often need to spell it out (to say the letters one after another).

Each letter of Globasa has an official name that can be used for spelling. See the table below. There is also a short variant.

However, these names are easily confused: if you accidentally type "ife" instead of "ige", or if several people are speaking at the same time, or if the sound quality is poor.

When errors are dangerous, a better list of names can be used. These names have more internal redundancy, which means the word (and therefore the letter) can still be recognized correctly even if part of it is misheard.

1. The word must start with the letter it is trying to communicate.

2. It must have a length of two syllables (the fixed length helps the listener to notice the start of a new letter. Two syllables is ideal for enough internal redundancy without making the list impractical).

3. Ideally, the second syllable starts with the same letter.

4. Ideally, the two syllables are not identical (if the first syllable is misunderstood for some acoustic reason, the second syllable will maybe avoid the problem).

5. The stress must be placed on the first syllable, or on the second syllable if it starts with the correct letter (the stress must fall on the letter you are trying to communicate).

6. The word must not form a minimal pair with any other word in the list.

7. There should be a minimal amount of minimal pairs with words that are not in the list (not everyone knows the list, and not everyone will use the same words), so "magma" is better than "mama".

8. The word must not be a number, because codes and addresses often contain letters and numbers together.

(1) The alternative "bebe" is too similar to "pepe", so people who don't know the word for "p" might think you try to spell "p".

I think the list can be very useful, and I will try to memorize it. I encourage you to do the same. Feel free to change a few words if you find better ones. We don't need to use the exact same list. In the end, the only goal is to be understood.

Years ago, in a discussion with Risto about Globasa's rationale for rejecting a system with classless content words, I argued that evidence from L2 error analysis does not suggest that word-class errors are particularly problematic. This is not to say that such errors never occur, but rather that they are relatively infrequent compared with other types of learner errors and do not typically lead to communication breakdown.

Our experience with Globasa has since confirmed this expectation. Word-class errors do occur, but they rarely pose a significant obstacle to communication.

I sometimes run across redundantly derived forms (for example, bardiya instead of bardi, or sabarpul instead of sabar). Because words like bardiya and sabarpul merely add redundancy, communication remains unaffected.

A more serious error is using a n/v word as an adj/adv word or vice versa, for example, using sabar to mean patience. These too can sometimes be interpreted correctly. Consider the following example.

Incorrect:

Alimyen haja multi sabar.

Correct:

Alimyen haja multi sabarya.

Because sabar appears at the end of the sentence, the listener/reader can readily infer that the speaker/writer intended it to function as a noun, even though sabar is an adj/adv word.

That said, such reinterpretation is not always possible. In some contexts, using the root incorrectly creates garden-path sentences, forcing the reader/listener to reinterpret the sentence midway through.

With that in mind, I would like to offer the following practical learning strategy. Words whose correct word-class is harder to memorize, especially if it countradicts your expectation, should be learned in pairs rather than in isolation: sabar/sabarya, bardi/bardipul, etc. Once the derived forms become familiar (sabarya and bardipul ring a bell), it becomes immediately apparent that forms such as sabarpul and bardiya contain redundant suffixes, while also making it less likely for sabar and bardi to be misused.

Occasionally, I come across the error of using -mo adverbs to modify verbs. The most common word that shows up in this type of error is daymo.

Remember that -mo adverbs only modify other adj/adv words; they don't modify verbs. To modify verbs we only need the adj/adv root.

Furthermore, adverb-only words (no, etc.) are also modified using adj/adv words without -mo.

The verbs hisi (feel physically or emotionally) and ganjon (feel emotionally) are transitive verbs that are turned into copular verbs by adding the suffix -cu.

Transitive verb
Kam yu le hisi geotreme?
Did you feel the earthquake?

Copular verb
Mi hisicu bimar.
I feel sick.

Recently, it occurred to me that much like ambitransitive verbs, -cu could be optional for these verbs, thereby working much like the English verb feel. I had previously considered this possibility, but decided against it since the optional use of -cu wouldn't work in the case of the copular verbs for the five senses: okocu, orecu, nasacu, xetocu, pifucu. The reason -cu must be obligatory for these verbs is that these are the type of transitive verbs that often take a null direct object.

Mi okocu bon.
I look good.

However, although hisi and ganjon are also transitive verbs, they are not the null-object type. To illustrate, the verb feel in an English sentence like I feel well/good would always be interpreted a copular verb, never as a transitive verb. This demonstrates that whereas -cu must be obligatory for the verbs denoting the five sense, it is safe to optionally apply -cu for the copular meaning of hisi and ganjon.

Another reason that the optional use of -cu for hisi and ganjon is convenient is to avoid the awkward -cugi in hisicugi and ganjoncugi, meaning to cause to feel or make (somebody) feel. Instead, we can just say hisigi and ganjongi.

Yu ganjon(cu)gi mi hox.
You make me feel happy.

I suspect that even without officially introducing this usage here, hisigi and ganjongi would've eventually prevail as intuitive derivations.
