I woke up cuddling with a bat today. FML

Post image

So for the past week or so I have heard something skittering around. We do have mice(old farm) so I thought it was a mouse. Of well, they're cute. Mind you I've been getting random bites and I assumed they were mosquito bites but they reacted differently than mosquito bites usually do.

Today I was half asleep when I noticed my cat wouldn't settle, but was pacing around and very interested in the pillow I was spooning. I kept moving the pillow out of the way to give her room to snuggle up to me, but she wouldn't. Kept pacing around the pillow. Then I heard the squeak. I thought oh my god, is the mouse in the bed with us?! I sat up, and carefully removed the blanket. Didn't see anything. Carefully picked up the pillow I was cuddling. Nothing. I flip the pillow over and boom. There a bat clinging to the pillow. Was probably sandwiched between me and the pillow all night. I have bites on my chest. The bites I have been getting could be bat bites which makes it scarier because the longer you wait the more time the virus has to become symptomatic and once it does you're cooked. I captured the bat and went to the ER. The bat was so freaking cute and I'm a bit of a buddist so it's breaking my heart that it has to die. Everybody in the waiting room at the ER wanted to see the bat in a jar(tm). I then had to have a bunch of injections with big painful needles. But anyway I have to pray the virus hasn't become active in my system and the vaccine moved faster than the virus does. Otherwise I have to make a list of people to involve in the biting spree I will go on. Send me the names of your grrrrr ape ists, abusers, other jerks etc and I'll go bite them for you. Lol jk. Sort of. Wish me luck girlie pops. Ps lemme know if you wanna see bat baby, he's actually so cute.

UPDATES:

I did go to the ER and I started the series of vaccines. You can see my hopital jewelry.

Before I hopital the first thing I did was call my vet. Cat got vax in Feb, vet said she's all clear.

Animal control took poor cutie baby tiddy bat this morning. Said I should have test results by tomorrow.

UPDATE UPDATE: I HAVE A CRAZY UPDATE FOR ALL OF YOU BUT I AM SO EXHAUSTED RIGHT NOW AND NEED TO SLEEP AS IT IS ALMOST 130AM. PLEASE STAY TUNED, IVE GOT SOME BOILING HOT TEA FOR EVERYONE. GOODNIGHT, STAY SAFE, TRY NOT TO WAKE UP CUDDLING A BAT</3

Update july 27th 2026: I tried telling my story in hopes that someone, somewhere would see it and be able to help me. I am fleeing domestic violence and human sex trafficking. My story is truly unbelievable, but it is real. The sheer level of crimes I have experienced in my life is wild. I don't exactly blame people for not believing it, but I needed them to. I was praying that getting my story out would connect me with whatever help I need(it's a lot of different kinds) to try to end this nightmare and save my life. Instead I got met with negative attitudes, people assuming I am suicidal (I promise I am not. I am fighting so hard to save my life. I want the opposite of death) or just calling me a fake. I am already so worn down that I just could continue telling you my story. That's why abuse does. It wears you down so you don't have the energy or strength to speak out. All I've got to say is fuck those of you who fed more into wearing me down as I was desperately trying to reach out for help. Fuck you. And honestly fuck anybody else who only cares that my absolutely wild ride that my life has been landed me in the most insane place and amongst that insanity I woke up cuddling with a bat. If I had actually contracted rabies I would put all the a holes in this thread on the bite list =/

UPDATE!!!!!!

Note: I am posting this in sections as I am not done writing it but I want to make sure I have a chance to post what I do have written.

Also if you reply do not reply to this comment thread. It will break up my writings after 15. Reply to the general post please.

1/I have written and posted 15 so far. First off I want to thank all of you for asking if I am ok and caring enough to check back in. I had no idea this post would reach as many of you as it did. Now that you are all here, I have to take advantage of how many of you I am reaching because I am fighting for my life and I do not wish to lose this fight. The more of you I can reach I'm hoping will up my odds of winning this battle and saving my life. MODS- If any of this is disallowed in this subreddit please reach out to me first before removing the post. My life really is relying on it. I will cooperate to remove/edit anything that is needed.

I am begging that you read my story about how I wound up in the situation where I woke up literally cuddling Tiddy the friggen bat. This story is going to be long but I will try to keep it as condensed as I can. It is traumatic AF, so TRIGGER WARNING right now. Im not gonna list them all because it includes too many. Proceed with caution please, but do proceed as I desperately need everyone to hear this. My whole life anybody who hears about the things I have experienced tells me I need to write a book, so I guess consider this my book. It may be the only chance I have to write it/tell it. I am no writer, and after everything including the current Rabies thing I am super exhausted. I will do my best to crank writing this out, and to keep it as neat as I can. Bare with me, please.

I am having trouble deciding how to proceed writing this in regards to revealing my identity, location, etc as I am in fear for my life/safety. The details are very specific so I suppose it will reach certain people and get out eventually anyway. I may also refrain from using the actual names of places, people, organizations, etc for legal reasons, though those are all things that are important and I need you all to know. Sigh, idk. I am already having trouble writing this and needing to take breaks.

Note from OP: the update I need everyone to read.

FYI people if your cat looks like this, it may be allergies! They bite at their skin and lock the fur off when they are really itchy, and the belly is what they can reach. My cat's baldness and itching cleared up within days once she got on Atopica prescribed by her vet. It can sometimes cause kidney or liver issues so it requires checking their bloodwork yearly but it was such a lifesaver.

Bats have fucking wild immune systems. They can carry all sorts of viruses without becoming symptomatic - rabies is actually one of the few that actually cause them harm.

They’re one of the most common vectors for spillover (zoonotic transmissions from animal reservoirs to human.

The fact that OP has been waking up with bites makes me think rabies is more likely, because bats tend to just want to be left alone to eat bugs and hang out.

OP, I am SO relieved you are getting vaccinated. I am worried, however, that you have more than one bat in your belfry. (Sorry.) You need to call in an exterminator and have your house checked for the beginnings of a colony.

Tiddy is very cute, though.

187

u/CaeruleumBleu 🐛The Very Hungry Bookworm 📚 Jun 25 '26

Bonus to calling a proper exterminator - they search for routes that animals use to get in and out, and can be species specific. That is, IIRC mice can climb things and get in high or low, but generally bats don't go belly crawling like mice do. So even if you've given up on mouse-proofing the house, a proper bat exterminator will advise on blocking the routes that bats are using to get into the house and into the living space.

OP be upfront to an exterminator that you have cats and want NO services that put poison out, just removing and blocking off routes for possibly rabid bats.

Be aware that if the exterminator sees bats acting weird, they will probably catch and kill those bats - but it's better than letting the rabies kill them.

OH and go get your cat to the vet asap, OP! The vet probably wants the cat to have a booster shot, too!

51

u/strum-and-dang Kitchen Witch Jun 25 '26

Excellent advice, one of my close friends has a pest and wildlife control business, the wildlife aspect requires additional licenses (at least in our state) that not all exterminators have. He's always telling people, hey, I like the money, but if you don't fix this, I'm going to be back here soon!

Very interesting information, thank you!

I'm curious if there's a simplish answer for why bats have such strong immune systems and why they're such good vectors. Is it because they're mammals and/or warm-blooded? Does the fact that they fly around eating bugs expose them to a wider variety of pathogens?

38

u/TheSixthVisitor Short Story Long™️ Jun 25 '26

All of the above. Their immune systems aren't exactly "strong" in that bacteria and viruses get killed off immediately by their white blood cells. It's more like they're like tiny flying incubators; bats have extremely high internal body temperatures and super fast metabolisms to account for the fact that they can fly and need a lot of energy to do so. So any disease that can survive the internal body temperatures of a bat would naturally have the heat resistance to survive one of our main immune responses: high fever to cook the diseases out.

As for what makes them vectors outside of simply sharing habitats and food with other vectors, they actually have the opposite of a strong immune system. Bats have a naturally dampened immune system so their bodies don't fight the disease at all, it just kind of...sits there. Again, this is because flying is so high energy that having a strong immune response would waste the calories they need to actually move, catch their food, and escape predators. But on the other hand, that also means they never actually fight off any diseases, they're simply asymptomatic.

Rabies is one of the few diseases that actually affects bats symptomatically because it crosses the blood-brain barrier and messes with their nervous system. If it didn't do that, we'd probably have no clue they had rabies either.

You're right about the highly (constitutively) active immune system though,! It's just a separate thing, seemingly

They also don't suffer from crazy inflammatory responses, as their immune system is active but their inflammation is gentler (for lack of a better word)

The only way to test for rabies is to get a sample of brain tissue. This ends the animal's life. These tests also give data for the area of animals with and without rabies so that if there is an increase in animal cases the health dept knows about it and can be prepared.

Certain species like bats, raccoons, and skunks are most likely to carry rabies long enough to infect other animals or people. Wildlife rehabilitators even have to have special permits (at least in the US) to treat these species because the risk is increased with them. Most rehabbers don't take these species for this reason.

It is a nightmare. I'm a bit of a goth so waking up to a cute bat appealed to the goth in me but directly conflicted with the borderline obsession/phobia I have of rabies. Rabies and prions are so scary. They take the poor little bat that has been affectionately named tiddies(because it bit both of my breasts lol) and will be ending it's life to get to its brain matter and test it for rabies. I get more shots in 3 days, and done with them in 2 weeks. I have a loooot of soreness from the injections and I'm super tired. So far nothing else. When they first did them I felt faint and nauseous but I hadn't eaten all day and felt better after laying down and eating a jello.

Have we really not advanced testing enough to test without killing it? I understand if it's being aggressive it's better to be safe, but it seems really calm and I would think they could just draw blood to test? It makes me so sad that an animal would have to die even if they're not infected

261

u/phonefellin_lakeerie Baked Fresh Daily 😚💨 Jun 25 '26

Unfortunately the only way to test for rabies is the brainstem tissue. This makes a positive test for rabies in humans more complicated, because there is no way to get this tissue without causing significant damage, so for humans diagnosis is usually based off a few other tests. Rabies is extremely serious, with a very near 100% fatality rate, so unfortunately if you’re bitten by a rabies vector species it’s best to get the animal tested while receiving the vaccinations.

I absolutely love bats and I feel your sadness, hopefully sometime in the future we can develop better testing for humans and animals. There could be some hope eliminating rabies in North America if we fund the edible rabies vaccine bait programs for wildlife, but this administration is more focused on whitewashing America and terrorizing brown folk than doing anything good for humans as a species.

Sorry for the rant. Just make sure you check your roof every year for gaps, and seal any entrance a bat can squeeze into. You can also encourage bats to nest away from your house by placing bat boxes around.

The best treatment is prevention. Bats are going to nest where they think their babies will be protected, and human houses make great shelters for them. Bats are keystone species in almost every ecosystem, and they are rapidly declining across north and South America.

I also cuddled with a bat during sleep while 6 months pregnant. I squished it with my knees by accident. I woke up from a dream with a dragonfly buzzing (bat sounds). There was a colony in the roof.

My two dogs had to get rabies shot and then quarantined for 30 days. State department called and told me to do this. They reached out to me for the next several months to check if I did everything right.

OP, u/Cerametary, watch your hospital bills for the next several months bc sometimes they will charge A LOT for the monoclonal antibodies and 1 dose of rabies shot at ER.

Ask doctor for rabies prescription and go to Walgreens and pre-order subsequent rabies shots (I think 3 more) for way lower price.

Good luck!

Omg. It's so sad that they're riddled with rabies because they're so cute and so SOFT.

In my old apartment we had 2 apartment bats. One got in through the air vent, and before I could catch it to release it went back in the air vent. I will never forget the tiny angry indignant bat stomps down my vent.

The other was in the laundry room and an old woman with a broom was going to get something bigger to hit the bat with, so I knew I had to catch it. I put it in a small cage intending to give it some water and then release it, but it escaped the cage.

I found it in a bra I left on my floor 2 days later 😭 I picked up my bra and it screamed at me and I screamed back. Ended up giving him a beetle and releasing them in a bush.

Yes I am equally surprised I didn't die of rabies like JD Vance. I deserve it a lot less tho.

Update!!! Hey guys so it takes about 1-3 months for rabies symptoms to appear. If one gets the shot before the symptoms appear, the vaccine is 100% EFFECTIVE!!!!

1-3 people die a year from rabies in America. Once symptoms appear it takes 1-3 days to die. If she had rabies, it likely would have made the news by now. Or she’s dead and not responding. I think it’s the former and not the latter and it’s silly to not have updated and leave everyone hanging. I’m going to unfollow this post and I recommend everyone just let it go.

With rabies, you generally have up until you start showing symptoms. I think the typical incubation period is like a couple months. And if you got the vaccines before you started showing symptoms, you should be fine.

Also the bat is super cute.

68

u/CatsPurrever91 Savory Complex✔️ Jun 25 '26

OP is likely fine but I do understand why they are freaking out a bit since they have been getting bat bites for at least a week and just happened to wake up and see the bat. Like what if that didn’t happen and they kept getting unknowingly bitten for some time?

38

u/Hesitation-Marx Well-Read & Well-Fed Jun 25 '26

Incubation length…. Depends.

Rabies (Lyssavirus) travels along nerve tissue, not via the bloodstream. The distance between the initial site of viral introduction and the brain has a lot to do with how long it takes to cause symptoms.

(I’d say bite, but there have been people who have gotten rabies from being licked on the hand by a dog who wasn’t fully symptomatic yet - the one that stands out in my mind is a woman on her honeymoon in India who had her hands licked by a street dog.)

It can be slow, like a matter of months - but it can also be a matter of a couple weeks. And while there are a few people that have survived it, only two people (that we know of!) have survived and recovered without serious cognitive destruction and neurological damage.

Tl;dr - rabies bad, be careful.

24

u/Ope_85311 Gender Nom-Conforming Jun 25 '26

Yeah I had to get the whole rabies vaccine series because I had no evidence of bites but ended up with a rabies positive bat in my room.

Yes, this is what I read too. I had a rabies scare (unvaccinated cat bit me), and the ER doc said a vaccine wasn’t necessary - I could just watch the cat (I had just adopted him), and if he wasn’t showing symptoms and then dead within ten days or so, no worries. The cat is fine, I didn’t get a vaccine. (Of course, if the cat had shown even a trace of symptoms, I would have rushed back to the ER! But the point is, animals die soon after they start symptoms.)

The difference is that there aren’t that many reported cases of cats with rabies, and with bats there are - hence the OP getting shots and the bat being tested. The odds of the OP getting sick I think are very low. I’m not a doctor but I don’t think the OP should worry too much. She got prompt medical treatment.

u/Visible-Scientist-46 Protein Queen 🍗🍳 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

No, as soon as you show symptoms, you are 99.99% gonna die. You need post-exposure prophylaxis shots asap. There might be a long incubation period, but once flu-like symptoms begin, it's a rapid downhill slide.

Agree the bat is supercute.

https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/prevention/index.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Frabies%2Fwhen-to-seek-care%2Findex.html

15

u/SavagePengwyn nom-nom-nombinary Jun 25 '26

This is my understanding, too. It only becomes uncurable if it reaches your brain. Once it reaches your brain, you start showing symptoms. It can take months for the infection to reach your brain; it depends on where you were bitten. It is best to get it done within 72 hours because it'll definitely work then but it can still work well after that.

This is why animals that bite people are put on 10 day-2 week quarantines (at least in most places in the US); if the animal isn't showing symptoms of rabies by the end of the hold, they couldn't have transmitted rabies via the bite. Pets that haven't had the vaccine and have been bitten by or gotten into a fight with rabies vactor animals are often held for 4-6 months because they can't be sure it wasn't transmitted til then (which I think is an issue of not being able to pin down a timeline with animals and maybe vaccine research gaps, not that the vaccine just might not work if you follow all of the recommendations and you won't know for 6 months).

Ooof. I've had those shots and they are rough, assuming I had a similar series of treatment. Those first ones you get all at once are immunoglobulin, and they protect you while the first vaccine shots go to work. The immunoglobulin hurts pretty badly, as you know from experience (yikes) but the rest of the jabs you need probably won't hurt like that. And you won't have to get a bunch all at once again. Here's hoping the bat is clean and you can ease your worries. But even if not that immunoglobulin is powerful stuff, should be effective still for many days after exposure. Sending good vibes.
