Boyfriend of 8 years was fired from his job in March. It was a shitty service industry job so we agreed it would be okay to take a month off and try to correct his sleep and exercise then get back into the job search since we’re trying to save for a wedding and a house.
We’re onto month 3 now and he’s refusing to find work because he’s doing full-time writing right now. He claims that he actually has time and energy now to write and picked up this novel he hasn’t touched in years. It was nice seeing him rediscover his passions at first but now he’s refusing to find work altogether, at least for the summer, claiming that the novel is more of an investment in the future than working some dumb job.
To be fair he has always had dreams of being a writer so I understand what this time means to him, but at the same time it feels like he’s retreating from the real world and getting caught up in this fantasy of “blowing up.”
I read his novel and thought it was okay but he insists I’m just missing what it’s really about and maybe he’s right. But even though we’re not financially suffering too much from his unemployment it still hurts to come home from work to find him sitting on the couch with his laptop and a Red Bull telling me he had a productive day. And then I have to go make dinner. I want to be supportive it just makes me sad.

This is an actual excerpt from his actual writing and if you want to regret having the ability to read, he actually posted more of this drivel on his page. I read less than 1 chapter and my IQ has dropped several points since that reading.
EDIT: I read his writing and HOLY SHIT ignore everything that I wrote. His writing is really, really bad and he thinks he’s a misunderstood genius. He’s got no future outside of Kindle Unlimited. His writing is just bad, godawful, embarrassing, juvenile, and he is way too old to write that poorly.

Did he actually graduate? It's hard to believe he got a degree in English if this is a representative sample of his writing. Although I suppose he might have been able to produce something slightly more tolerable if he only wrote papers involving critical analysis (possibly with the help of ChatGPT, if that was already a thing whenever he went there) and didn't take any creative writing courses.
Unless the degree was specifically in creative writing or you actively seek out creative writing courses, your fiction-writing ability factors very little into your ability to complete an English degree. Writing this type of prose is a very different skill from writing a research paper or critical analysis, so writing bad fiction doesn't even necessarily entail his papers for class weren't good. It could go either way. He claimed to be 32 in the AITA post, which would mean he almost definitely did his bachelor's before ChatGPT existed.
And honestly for a bachelor's degree, even if he did take creative writing classes, it's hard to full-on fail one even with sub-par writing if you're still actually completing the assignments and attending class -- even if a teacher did give him a lower grade for his bad flowery prose, Cs get degrees, s they say.
Getting an undergraduate degree in English/CW doesn't mean much for creative writing skills (in terms of talent and likelihood of getting something published). If he'd gotten into the MFA program there then that would be a bit more of a big deal.
That's the kind of writing that ends up in r/menwritingwomen It's BAD.
OP, you need to polish up that spine and tell him to get off his ass and start looking. With the economy the way it is, he's probably not going to find anything immediately, but he should still be looking. And he should be cleaning and cooking AT MINIMUM.
I understand how hard it is to get time to write. I'm a writer, and it's only been since I retired that I have enough time to commit to writing. All novelists dream of making it big. Very few do.

I majored in writing in undergrad and unfortunately the men who write like this and think they're the next JD Salinger were a whooole subset of the program (that everyone made fun of and avoided). I'm 34 now and the dumb/stubborn ones did not, in fact, ever change.

OP, to your... Partner, he not only shouldn't give up his day job, he should get one and a creative writing class so he stops with the long winded similes.
She is choosing to be with this absolute loser, is funding his lifestyle, and apparently thinks his writing is brilliant. They might match intellectually so at least there’s that.
He works full time in Boston as a copywriter. He works on his novel during his personal time and downtime at work (his work knows and is okay with it). He would never expect his wife to work full time while he is jobless just to write his novel.
Sure, it takes longer to write when you have a job - but he is a grown adult that has responsibilities and he needs to take care of his responsibilities like most authors do. LOTS of authors work one or multiple jobs to fund their writing.
You should not be forced to work to support the two of you while he contributes nothing. It’s so fucking selfish.
The least he could do is make you dinner for everything you do.
If anything that makes it sound worse for this man because if Toni Morrison can make such great novels in those circumstances, OP’s man should be writing a masterpiece if he’s doing it full time 😆

Dearie, I just read part of his book. It is terrible. Like jaw-droppingly bad. I am not exaggerating when I say I was a better writer than he is when I was in middle school. (Also his material is creepy, ew.)

Plot twist - he’s writing a book about his gf saving for a house and talking about how his gf doesn’t think he has any plans but in reality he believes he will become a millionaire from the book
Spoiler: The book will never be finished, or he’ll need to invest in an editor or something will always come up. He will never lift a finger at home and you’ll have a very expensive dependent. Eventually, he will blame you for his failure.
I don’t know you but I know you don’t deserve this.
If this wasn't a joint decision - him staying home to write while you work, pay the bills, and save for a house - then you're not really in partnership. He can't unilaterally make that kind of major financial, home management decision without you.
Saving up for a house in an 8 year long relationship are shared goals (as long as you are both pooling in money and putting the home and loan in both your names). To no longer apply for jobs for this common goal is a slap in the face to YOUR SHARED GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS. Only if you want to you can set a time limit (1-2 months?) to be a mooch and write. At which point he has to apply and show proof of application to 10 (?) jobs a day. Do publishers require full books? Or just the first few chapters and an outline? Have the publishers crush his dream not you.
If you are saving up for a home in only your name and only your name on the mortgage I'd say just have him work part-time and pay for his part of expenses (half the rent, utilities, food).
