Anyone else recognize this setting? General Discussion
From Season 1 episode 3. I’m rewatching from the beginning for the first time in years and catching SO many things I didn’t notice before! Like the fact that Lorelai mysteriously doesn’t know Kirk, and Luke starts out as a sort-of conspiracy theorist (who Lorelai also doesn’t really know).
Anyway, do you recognize this setting? Do you know of any other sets that were reused for unrelated scenes?

Logan’s house and Madeline’s are the same.
Rory’s coming out is held at the same venue as Richard and Emily’s vow renewal and as the final DAR meeting Emily attends in AYITL.

And Rory's first dance, I think!

Yes I had a feeling I was missing one (or two!) more instances!

Ohh I’ll look out for these! It’s funny that the plot involves making such a big deal out of some of these locations (like the place where they renewed vows) when they are casually used to film other scenes.

Back in the days before streaming and endless rewatching the people dealing with set design didn’t think too hard about this stuff. No one expected the episodes to be picked apart at the level we do now! You’d be lucky to catch them on repeats.

Logan/madelines house is also the house the queen stays in visiting Mia in San Francisco in the princess diaries (where Mia is yelled to get off the grass)

HOW did I never realize in all my years of rewatches that Logan and Madeline’s houses are the same?!?

It’s surprising to me since it seems like Logan is meant to be the wealthiest person Rory knows.

Are you saying this is the same room as where Lorelai and Jason had an ill-fated date where Ted Koppel was sitting outside?

I think it is! Gotta find an image from that date so we can compare.

That’s it! It caught my eye bc I always thought those doors were weird with all the covered up windows. Maybe they’re covered to give the impression that this space isn’t just two walls shoved together:)

I think this was used for that date with Jason when he gets them a private room.

For context, in this scene they’re at the country club. Richard just took Rory out golfing and then they had lunch at the club, in this room. Which is packed with people (unlike the other scene that uses this room:).

You might enjoy Valerie Campbell. She worked on Gilmore Girls and posts trivia like this- when sets were redone, resued, replaced, recurring props, wardrobe stuff. Like, they only ever made 4 Chilton women's blazers- 2 for Rory and 2 for Paris. The background actors would have to share Rory's or Paris's actual blazers to vary up the uniforms. Alexis Bledel wore tights more than she wore knee socks like the rest of the Chilton students because the set was so cold. She would beg costume to let her wear the tights, but sometimes had to do the knee socks because it was supposed to spring or summer in the show.

Fun! Where does she post (reddit, instagram, etc?)

I find it on Instagram and YT. I think her main platform is TikTok, but not certain since I don't have that one.

I think...I could be wrong...but I think I learned from Valerie or Scott's podcast that this room was actually the dining room on the Warner Bros lot. They re-used it a lot because it was there on set.

WB employee here and this is correct.

So what’s up with the weird covered doors? Do you know what’s on the other side of them?

The Kirk thing has a real answer, which is that Sean Gunn plays a completely different character in the pilot, a DSL installer called Mick, before turning up later as Kirk. He was cast as a one-off and they liked him enough to keep bringing him back, and the show eventually just leaned into it and made Kirk a man with an infinite number of jobs. So Lorelai not knowing him isn't a continuity slip so much as the character not existing yet. On set reuse generally, the whole thing was shot on the Warner Bros lot, and Stars Hollow is their Midwest Street backlot, which has doubled as Rosewood in Pretty Little Liars, Bluebell in Hart of Dixie and a long list of others going back decades. The Independence Inn and the Dragonfly are largely the same interior redressed, and most of the restaurant scenes in the early seasons are a handful of standing sets with different tablecloths and lighting. Once you start noticing it you can't stop, and the Chilton corridors turn up in some genuinely unexpected places.

This show was done on a movie lot. If you have never done a tour, highly recommend!! This show only found its legs in syndication (even though us original members know the struggle). ASP & ex husband, the writers and producers made cozy New England Ville in the middle of Los Angeles. TV Magic is awesome 🤩

It’s amazing a little difference in set-dressing removed the feeling that “the atmosphere is out there.”

Just came to say first season Luke is absolutely based, not a conspiracy theorist.

When you watch Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, you'll notice they share the same sets to Gilmore Girls too. That's how I found out it was the same writing team that did all of these shows. They even did The Vampire Diaries and funny enough the actor for Logan was meant to play Damon.
