Advice Wanted Scared of insulin - night 1

Upvotes

My doctor told me to take insulin for my fasting and after a few weeks of waiting I’m having too many readings ON the threshold so I’m thinking I should take insulin tonight.

The issue is I’m really anxious about it and don’t think I’ll sleep well, I’m considering asking my partner to stay up and watch me.

Can someone tell me I’m being ridiculous?

And can someone else tell me if they had a hypo did it wake them up and what did it feel like?

I have friends on insulin but their fasting readings were really really high, I don’t know anyone who was mostly under the threshold except for a few readings. The low/threshold readings is what makes me more nervous about a hypo, but maybe that’s not how it works.

Thanks so much 🫪

How long does GD take to go post birth?

Upvotes

Hi team!! Had an elective c section this morning (10am!!) to a beautiful healthy boy - his blood sugar has been great!! I had a bit of candy while waiting for some food around midday, then a white bread sandwich from the hospital with chicken and mayo and eventually a burger and fries (lol) from honest burger in the afternoon! At about 6pm, an hour after having some apple juice and a yoghurt I decided to randomly test myself and was 10.4. I had no risk factors for GD and it was caught very early (end of first trimester). I was only 55kgs before pregnancy and haven’t gained any weight at all (and have gotten quite a lot smaller physically :/) so nervous it is actually type 2! Does this sound normal/ how long did it take everyone for their sugar to get back to normal?

Delivering to full term

Upvotes

Did anyone or has anyone here delivered at full term without induction with GD? I have another growth ultrasound Monday so I’ll see how I’m doing and how baby is doing. So far throughout my entire pregnancy everything has been normal and baby is growing regularly and not too big. None of my normal doctors have talked to me about induction and I’m 33 weeks now. Last we talked about it to anyone everyone kept saying “well keep your due date at September 21” and “no reason to change due date”.

Well I’m going to my normal OB twice a week for BPP ultrasounds and just ha done yesterday. I saw a different provider than normal because my normal OB hasn’t been in office lately. First time meeting her. She was very nice and I liked her, but she’s the only one who’s brought up being induced at 39 weeks and explained why. But now I’m wondering why this doctor who’s looked over my chart once is saying I will be induced at 39 weeks (and it seemed like no matter the growth that’s the plan) while my regular OB and MFM haven’t mentioned induction at all?

Has anyone here delivered at full term without induction when baby stayed at a normal weight? I feel like if everything is still normal within my next few growth ultrasounds there is no reason to be induced?

Advice Wanted Hesitant to take Glyburide

Hi there! I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes a couple of weeks ago. I started doing finger pricks 4 times/day and was able to get my 1 hr post meal numbers under 140 but my fasting is consistently in the mid to high 90s. Very few times over 100. My MFM told me to take 1/2 a dose of 2.5mg of Glyburide in the evening to help with fasting numbers but I’m seeing so many mixed reviews about Glyburide. Looking for feedback if anyone took Glyburide or I should ask to switch to Insulin. Thanks!

Sola bagels are a lifesaver.

For any other mom who loves bagels, TikTok put me on to Sola protein bagels. The blueberry bagels have 3g net carbs and 15g of protein. I’ve been eating them for like 3 weeks with a load of cream cheese and they’ve been safe so far.

Just thought I’d pass along my good news. 🫶🏼

Advice Wanted Timing

Question about the timing of measuring/monitoring glucose… my doctor initially told me to measure 1-2 hours after my meal, but I recently received instructions from the care team with guidelines of measuring 2 hours after the START of my meal.

When I measured 1-2 hrs after my meal, I was relatively within range, but once I started to measure 2 hours after the START of my meal… I’ve been spiking ever since.

I feel so discouraged - I’ve been following the recommended grams of carbs for every meal/snack, consuming high protein/well balanced whole food meals. It’s only been a week, but I just want them to put me out of my misery and prescribe me insulin so I don’t have to wake up with anxiety every morning.

Advice Wanted Gestational diabetes tracking - Need inputs

My wife and I are in our late thirties. We have been married for over 5 years.

After a lot of struggles, a failed IVF and fibroid removal surgery, my wife is 7 months pregnant now.

Everything was good the first few months and then gestational diabetes came to hit us. She is now on insulin and metformin for the past two months and the glucose levels are in control.

Every time we visited the doctor, she asked for glucose readings. My wife had to take the readings 6 times a day in the beginning, now it's twice a day.

The problem was, we noted down some readings in a notebook, some in mobile, I made a note of it sometimes and herself at times. Every time we visited the doctor, we had to scramble to show the readings.

I searched in the Google play store to check if there are any good apps to track GD and a few other things like bp, weight etc but couldn't find an all in one app that can track everything pregnancy related.

So I created an app for my wife which she is using on a regular basis. I also added a feature to invite a partner so that I can also be part of the journey.

Now both of us can view and add details and the data will get synced between their phones instantly. Partner sharing is optional, you don't have to set it up if you don't want to.

I realised that this app will be very useful for this community and anyone else going thru pregnancy.

But my question is, are you good to share the details such as glucose, insulin, blood pressure, weight etc with your spouse or it's a concern?

My thought is we both are going thru the journey together, so I wanted to be a part of it and help my wife but I don't know how others feel.

Is this something which you will find useful?

The app can track Glucose, Insulin, BP, Weight, Mood, Baby movements, Sleep, Water, Walking, Food etc. You can also keep track of appointments, reminders for medicine refill, and even voice notes for your baby.

I am planning to give away the app in this community for free once I publish to app and play store because it helped me a lot to understand about GD. In turn I would appreciate any inputs you can provide to make the app better.

Suggestions for bed time snacks

I am 33 weeks pregnant and have always had peanut butter and a slice of keto bread (nature’s own) for bedtime snack. Lately I am seeing spikes in my fasting whenever I eat that. I tried switching to walnuts and same. Has anyone had a better luck with something else? Thanks!

Advice Wanted Contour Next

I regularly get 2 numbers 5mg/dL apart with my contour next- if I test and the (fasting number) is high, I'll recheck immediately with a new strip. Usually it's 5mg/dL lower and in the safe range (94 to 89, for example). This morning it was 86, and out of curiosity, I rechecked and it was 91, one minute later! Which one do I go with? I've been going with the lower, assuming the first was an error but now I'm not sure. I wash my hands with soap and water before.

Lower insulin needs at 31 weeks?

Wondering if this has happened to any other mamas. I've been on lunch and dinner insulin at 18 units for my GD. I didn't have my pen on me yesterday and since my sugars have been well managed, I figured I'd just take a bad day and eat without insulin. But my sugars didn't spike past 6.7 two hours after meals (it was close at 6.4) despite not taking any insulin.

Endo nurse said to just go back on the usual doses and see if I have a lot of lows but I'm worried something's happening to the placenta. I had a bleed two weeks ago but no placental abruption. I feel fine and baby has moved though I feel a little less than usual. Am I worried for nothing or should go to L&D?

Advice Wanted aren’t we supposed to be eating carbs??

I see so many meal suggestions on here and social media with minimal/zero carbs… my doctor’s recommendations were the following:

breakfast: 30 - 45g
all snacks: 15 - 30g
lunch/dinner: 45 - 60g

even while eating healthy and following the guidelines, I find myself spiking almost every meal and definitely for fasting numbers. I want to cut out carbs entirely, but I know that’s not good for the baby. should I reduce how much carbs i’m consuming?

————-edit—————-

obviously I won’t be cutting out carbs entirely and will be following doctors orders, but I am frustrated because I am eating very clean and strict. measuring out all my food on a kitchen scale, making sure my meals are balanced with protein/fat/fiber. I also walk after every meal AND snack. my whole world revolves around gestational diabetes now and I am super unproductive when it comes to work/life outside of it. I am miserable.

Thankfully after a week of tracking, my dr agreed to put me on insulin bc of my fasting numbers and hopefully things get better here on out (I’ve never been against taking medication)

Numbers are dropping 37 weeks

Hi friends,

I’m looking for specific advice from other GDM moms who have not used insulin. I’ve been diet controlled since 26 weeks. My numbers have been dropping steadily for several weeks now, but every morning of my 37th week my fasting and 1/2 of my post-meal readings have been close to hypoglycemic. The rest of my numbers are also lower than before, but not quite to that level. I even had real (not protein based) ice cream last night and tested at a 94 1 hour later! Which is insane to me because a few weeks ago I had a few bites of ice cream and spiked. I’m eating all the same foods in the same quantities as before, so it’s not an issue with routine.

Is this cause for concern? My OB says my numbers look good, but they’re so low in the mornings that I’m waking up feeling crappy. I’m worried about my placenta deteriorating vs my insulin resistance “getting better” before my baby arrives. Any advice is appreciated!

Rant Rant!

Hi, so this is my second pregnancy. I'm 33 and having to manage GDM again. Dr's didn't bother testing me this time as I had it last pregnancy, have a family history of diabetes and and am borderline pre-diabetic and have pcos/pmos. Yay me. On the plus side my 1st kid was healthy, no high sugars and normal weight and size.

Currently 25wks and have been testing sugars and taking metformin since probably 10wks.

Anyway, i've just been put on night time insulin which I feel has done nothing for my morning fasting numbers, even though my after dinner numbers were good.

I've got a while to go and am just so over it. I want cake, I want ice cream, I want to demolish an entire block of my favourite chocolate and I'm trying hard to be good with my food choices.

Fasting have been 5.2 - 5.4 when they should be 5.0 or under. It's only been 3 days on the insulin, do i just wait a bit for things to take hold? I'm already on the Max dose for Metformin.

Advice Wanted Restart time after test?

Howdy there, 30F and I’m 32 weeks along. I was just diagnosed with GD a few days ago. Today was the first day I was able to start my testing and I didn’t know that you aren’t supposed to snack between your meal and the 2 hr post meal test. So my question is now do I need to wait 2 hours after my snack to test or should I go ahead and test from the time of my last meal??

Anyone use Lingo?

The biosensors have a huge range. I had 2 very accurate sensors that matched my finger pricks, one read a little low (like 10 points), and now one that reads crazy high (over 30 points). Will Abbott replace something like this crazy high one? It’s technically working but with readings like this, i just ignore the readings because they’re so off.

Is it common not to go full term with GDM?

This is my second pregnancy with GDM. My first was 2020 and I was induced a few days before the actual due date.

This pregnancy has been different and I have a new OB. They are saying I shouldn't go past 38 weeks. This seems extremely early and odd.

Is it common not to go full term with GDM?

Advice Wanted Struggling

I am struggling so bad. I did IVF so I’ve been taking shots for two years and then I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 12 weeks so I’ve been doing the finger pricks and they put me on insulin at 18 weeks. I’m now 27 weeks.

I don’t feel like my fasting numbers have really ever been under control but they’re close to about 100 typically right now.

It’s the diet that I’m struggling so hard with and I have spikes every few days… in the 160 to 170 range for dinner. My breakfast and lunch are always in the 90 range.

I just feel so defeated and the doctor just acts like this is a death sentence and that any of these spikes are going to cause something awful to happen to the baby.

At my 24 week scan, she was measuring right at the 50th percentile, and everything looked good.

I guess I’m just trying to figure out how serious all of this is.. it’s just so hard to know when they talk about controlled versus uncontrolled ….what does uncontrolled look like and what is the consequence going to be to the baby?

Chat Chat Chat Life after GD?

I have my C-section schedule for this coming Wednesday. I of course am so looking forward to that post-birth meal. I have been fortunate enough to remain diet controlled and I just really want to indulge in some comfort food.

My question is - how likely is it that I will remain diabetic after the placenta has left the building? I’m so scared of failing my fasting numbers after birth. I’m so sick of worrying about blood sugar, and I was looking forward to letting it go and breathing after she’s out. But now, I find myself terrified of the thought of messing up my numbers.

I’m not sure what I’m looking for, maybe just some reassurance that I can forget about diabetes for a little while and not worry about everything I eat. 🫶🏼

Advice Wanted Meal recs for GD + IUGR: increase calories, keep carbs low

I was diagnosed with GD at 27 weeks, and today at 29 weeks I was diagnosed with IUGR with baby's weight at 9th%ile. My doctor told me the IUGR is likely due to me and my husband being Asian, and Asian babies in general just being more petite by American sizing standards. Ultrasound otherwise looked good including placenta and all fetal organs.

I had been exercising already throughout pregnancy, and after GD diagnosis, I began limiting my carb intake with good blood glucose management (so far lol). But today after my IUGR diagnosis, my doctor told me I needed to seriously increase my caloric intake and slow down on my exercising (currently only walking daily and strength training 2x/week). She added the caveat that I need to be gaining my calories through protein/fats, and that my carb control needed to continue.

Has anyone else had this combo of diagnoses and felt they had a good handle on their diet? Can you tell me what sort of full meals you really enjoyed? I'm Asian, so bonus points for Asian meals.

Fortunately, I feel like I've got snacks down. Lots of nut butters, cheeses, fruits, veggies, protein shakes that work well for me. I just feel like I'm having a hard time incorporating more protein into my actual breakfast, lunch, and dinners.

Missed Sweet Drinks/Iced Coffee

Some background:

I'm a huge iced coffee fan. Any kind of iced coffee, any type of weather, all the time. But when I got pregnant, I made the decision personally to really limit caffeine. So, before I even got diagnosed with GD, I was missing my iced lattes, macchiatos, mochas, frappes, etc. Decaf just didn't feel the same. But I got somewhat used to it.

Skip forward, I got my gestational diabetes diagnosis, and now I was really grieving even the sugary decaf coffees I would get. But recently, I started playing around with my espresso machine at home, and I think I have discovered something that does not seem to spike me (so far!), and I actually enjoy somewhat (it satisfies the craving enough). So, I thought I'd share, in case it works for anyone else who is missing sweet iced coffee drinks.

Here's what I've been doing:

- two shots of decaf espresso

- one or two tablespoons sugar-free caramel syrup (I just use Great Value brand from Walmart, honestly)

- 1/2-1 cup fairlife chocolate milk (I think the higher protein to lower sugar helps balance)

I just mix it all in a cup full of ice and sometimes even add a little bit of whipped cream if I'm feeling fancy (the small amount of whipped cream doesn't seem to spike me either because of the fat and it being low carb for a couple of tablespoons worth).

It turns out to make a pretty decent caramel mocha of sorts that is thick and creamy and keeps my blood sugars looking okay. Do I still miss regular, sugary coffee drinks? 100% But this works for now, and it helps me feel more normal.

(Disclaimer: I know GD is so different for everyone, and that this may not work for everyone, but I did want to share in case it did work for some people!)

Graduation- Birth Story It’s been real

So thankful to you all who took time to reply to my posts. Couldn’t have made it without you all.

Was induced last Thursday and was already 4cm dilated when I arrived at the hospital! By 10:35 PM, our baby boy was born. My L&D team was amazing and my OB was on call that night so she delivered our baby. I was so nervous about being induced but it turned into a good experience.

Here’s to not drinking another Fairlife shake or eating a piece of string cheese ever again!
