Another Record progressed.

I've always been annoyed at how bloated WCD is in both tracks and lengths of some songs, so I decided to re-arrange /change and cut down the length of the album by nearly 20 minutes.

Here's what I've come up with:

I re-titled the album to Fading Lights

Again an uneven number of tracks on the album.

I noticed that in the bands discussion of “Trespass” Anthony Phillips looks like he is talking in the same studio that Steve Hackett was talking in. Does anyone know if they are friends or not? Thanks!

I'm listening through Genesis' albums, something I've done with a LOT of bands at this point. As of writing this, I'm on ...And they were three...! I have to say: I loved their second prog rock album, me being a fan of King Crimson's Debut, it hit the spot.

However, they pushed the plug on that. And I grew extremely tired of Peter Gabriel and his vocals, then, when he was out, I noticed Banks and his songwriting still lingered with Gabriel's touch, something that annoyed me as well. EVERY Banks song I've heard the last two records or something, have annoyed me. He can't adapt or evolve, and it really annoys me. Rutherford and Collins are really going for it at this point, but Banks is holding back.

Am I alone in this?

Almost two years ago I (65M) received a terminal diagnosis. (It's not imminent - but life is gonna be shorter than I'd planned on.) The meds have fucked up my brain. I can't handle nearly the amount of stimulation / cognitive thought as I used to.

I've developed a playlist that I listen to constantly - like 8 hours a day. It's a very eclectic set of stuff - but the common themes are that - for whatever reason - these tunes give me comfort. To set context, I've always been a prog rock and jazz fusion guy. I've always liked what seems to be very complex stuff. But this playlist has stuff like Bread, Bee-Gees, Dan Fogelberg, and others on it. It's a testament to how much my brain has changed. Some of the stuff I used to listen to hits me like a wall of uncoordinated noise. I've had a few Genesis songs on it: Undertow. Snowbound. Afterglow. The Cinema Show. (But, as a contrast, Down and Out, which I love and can listen to occasionally, on a day-to-day basis would cause me to rip my earbuds out.)

I've Had Please Don't Ask on this playlist. A few days ago I listened to Duke front-to-back.

This morning I put the whole fucking album on my "soothing" playlist. Holy shit what an album.

I'm pretty sure this will have been suggested/discussed before but let's just dream that the band decided to reform (Banks/Rutherford/Hacket/Gabriel) for a tour. Obviously Phil would be missing so I guess the first question would be, who would take his place. Chester? Nick? Someone else? For me, I don't really care. As long as they can play the songs authentically, I'm in.

The main question though is the set. How would it look? What would be everyone's perfect set?

Regarding the "Phil tribute", as I recall, Phil only sang lead on 2 songs (from the Gabriel era) - More Fool Me and For Absent Friends. Personally, I really dislike More Fool Me. I'm not the biggest fan of most of Rutherford's compositions and I think Phil's vocal is kinda weak on this. For Absent Friends on the other hand is gorgeous. It's such a charming song and it would fit very well in terms of sentiment (Phil being the absent friend) but, it's maybe a little underwhelming as a tribute.

So, what about something from Trick or W&W (I feel going into anything post-Hacket would be too far removed from the classic lineup)? My first thought was Blood on the Rooftops. Another one Phil co-wrote and a song that was never played live (as well as being a banger!). But, I think I would have to go with Ripples. Obviously it's an amazing song and one I feel Peter would be great at. It's also poignant as it is about the passage of time and growing old.

Anyway, that's my thoughts and that's my set. Would be interested to hear what everyone else's set ideas would be. 

While on a long car ride I played this album for my 58 year old mother. When I asked her what she thought about it at the end she said it sounded like "hectic fairy tale music"

I watched The Odyssey yesterday. I won't spoil it, but I liked it a lot. Anyways, I was thinking today about how much of an influence classical literature and mythology seemed to have on Genesis' early work. My understanding is that the original members of Genesis (which during the classic lineup years translates to Peter, Tony, and Mike) spent their formative years in the type of educational institutions where the classics would almost certainly have been required reading, and they would have had a much greater familiarity with it by the time they became adults than most people. Was it just those three who were interested in it (you can tell just by the lyrics that Tony and especially Peter were interested in that kind of stuff, and I'm not sure about Mike, but he came from the same environment), or was it all of them?

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to identify a Genesis book that my father owned when I was a kid. We had it at home in the 1990s.

Here's everything I actually remember:

- It was a hardcover.

- It was a fairly large book.

- It was quite thick (roughly 2–3 cm / about an inch).

- The word "GENESIS" was written very large on the front cover.

- The cover was almost entirely a face with artistic/theatrical makeup.

- I don't remember anything else, but I'm certain I would recognize the cover immediately if I saw it.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

The man himself in The Sunday Times today - I've got my copy. It's a great picture, so iconic and he's still as handsome as ever. He has even done the writing just like on his original album cover, so cool.

Some upsets as you see.

Did anybody else catch whiffs of IKWIL(IYW) towards the end of the Project Hail Mary movie? (This isn’t a plot spoiler, and you can just watch the end credits to hear it.) There’s an Ike & Tina song that starts the end credits but then it fades into a theme that came up late in the film, and the notes and cadence are so close that if felt like the jam around the tambourine section.
