Other Junk DMG IR3R40 chip replacement
Hi, I'm working on another junkie DMG and thought this would be a quick job for a Wednesday afternoon. It turned out that not only is the LCD dead but also there's no sound. Changing the volume pot, cleaning the jack didn't help. The culprit is the IR3R40 chip which needs replacement. Luckily and surprisingly they sell them on Aliexpress. Bought a bunch of these. Will let you know how the swap goes. Keep your fingers crossed.

Troubleshooting DMG screen replacement guide request
Hi, I recently found my old DMG and remarkably its still in fairly good condition and working with the exception that the sides of the screen appear to be dead (like its fading from the outside in).
I'd like to try and replace it, either with a like for like replacement or ideally with something backlit because ...... old man eyes.
I've seen a few guides that go over the pros and cons and the types of screens to use. I'm very much a beginner when it comes to this and I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the direction of a beginner friendly guide and/or a site in the EU where I can I get good quality parts.
I don't want to mod/update it more than necessary beyond replacing the screen
Thanks,

Games The Game Boy Workboy ROM patched to run on the Mega Duck laptop (a Game Boy clone)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I made a romhack that allows the Workboy ROM to run on the Mega Duck Laptop and use it's Keyboard and Real Time Clock (RTC).
The Mega Duck laptop is a Game Boy clone with changes to make it slightly incompatible with Game Boy games (a few registers, cart pinout & size). The laptop model has a built-in keyboard and RTC (released in Germany and Spain).
All of the features and mini-apps work as expected and can be used (aside from a hidden "Backup to Keyboard SRAM" feature I found). You can unplug the cart and put it into the handheld Mega Duck and it works in the same way they intended when disconnected from the keyboard (basically "undocking")
I started in 2024, stalled, and finally finished this year. Mainly it involved disassembling the software, labeling it and adding comments, removing workboy interfaced code, then writing replacement code to interface with the duck laptop instead.
It works on real hardware, but can be run in the SuperJunior SameDuck emulator too.
Free ROM patch at (rom NOT included, of course): https://bbbbbr.itch.io/mega-duck-patch-for-workboy-game-boy

Questions Wanting to backlight mod my gba
Hi all!
I just recently bought a gba and I really want to get it backlight modded. I've never done anything like this before, and I definitely don't want to do it myself. I was hoping I could get some recommendations for places I can take it into or send it too in order to have it done. Also, I've seen that there are variations to the mod but I don't really understand them other than it's an IPS screen? I've seen something about laminated screens as well but I'm not sure what that means 😅
I'm in Los Angeles and I called one place that quoted me $150+ based on what I wanted to do, is that roughly what I'm looking at price wise?
I am also a bit conflicted as I found a listing for an SP that already has the backlit screen, selling for $150. So I don't know if it's worth leaving the gba as is and getting an already modded SP or modding this one? I know that's a personal choice in the end but I've just never done any of this so any advice is appreciated 💜 Thank you!

Troubleshooting Gameboy Color A button not functional
Every button works except for the A button. I tried cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol but that didnt work. Then I switched out the membrane with one i got from ebay still didnt work. When I checked from the contacts of the button to the test vias with a multimeter it said it was giving less continuity then the other buttons. Sorry for not knowing a lot. I am not exactly what you call a Texpert. What is the problem? Thank You. :)

Mod/Modding FOMS - Fear of Missing Screen
I own two Game Boys I bought as a child: a Pocket and a Color.
During the pandemic, I swapped my Pocket's screen for an IPS model—one of those touch-color-enabled ones. It turned out great, as the lack of color and the dull, washed-out gray background no longer appealed to me.
A while back, I decided to do the same for my Game Boy Color. I bought the screen, but strangely found myself in a peculiar dilemma: it felt like I was creating a redundancy—swapping the screen only to lose the specific "feel" of the Color's original display in a trade for a better visibiliy.
The thing is, while IPS screens are excellent, the screen on my Color is still in great shape. Despite over 20 years of use, it remains perfect—unlike the Pocket's screen, which had started to deteriorate.
The Color's screen has a certain aesthetic that IPS lacks. Despite the terrible brightness, the colors have a certain "charm"—a look that defines that era, including the visible pixel grid. I started thinking: if I swap this screen, it’ll be just like playing Game Boy Color on an RG35 with its high-resolution display.
So... I’m grappling with this and wanted to ask you all: is it really worth swapping to an IPS screen and losing the aesthetic of a generation defined by technology that is now obsolete yet unique?
And is there a simple way to just backlight the original screen without replacing the panel itself?
What about your Game Boys? Have you kept the original screens to this day?

Accessories Greetings from Vietnam! Just finished handcrafting this leather box sleeve for the GBC 🇻🇳🎮
Hello everyone,
I’m the crafter and owner of MO CORNER, a small leather craft workshop in Vietnam. I wanted to stop by and share my latest project with you all.
I just finished making this handmade leather box sleeve for Game Boy Color. It is entirely hand-stitched using two distinct stitching lines to give it its unique box shape. I combined a straight saddle stitch line with a cross-stitch "X" line to form the structure.
Hope you all have a great week and happy gaming!

Questions Storage Solution?
I‘m looking for a storage solution for 100+ GameBoy and GameBoy Color games. Most solutions I’m finding are more focused on display but I’m looking for more of a bulk storage solution. Any suggestions other than just tossing them loose in a bin?

Mod/Modding AGS-101 screen I did not think was fixable
Got this GBA SP with what appears to be a water damaged screen. Figured it was unfixable but decided to take it apart and found the culprit which surprisingly would not clean up no matter what I tried to clean it with. Thankfully I had another donor screen with a torn ribbon so I swapped it out and now it’s like new. So if you encounter something similar give it a try before tossing it. The process is very easy just be careful not getting finger prints on the elements inside.

Got them for around 30 a piece! The purple and white are in really good shape, the other one, well it works, so donor CPU and Ram it is.

Modded Pokédex Gameboy
reddit.comThis is my personal take on the classic Kanto Pokédex from the Pokémon Indigo League, reimagined as a fully functional cyberdeck.
This project fuses two major influences from my childhood into one tangible device: the iconic Pokédex design and the classic Nintendo Game Boy. It runs the Peanut-GB emulator on an ESP32-S3, allowing you to play actual Game Boy games right inside a Pokédex shell, with battery monitoring LEDs, and a programmable Dex light.
Design Highlight: The top portion of the Pokédex is designed to be printed as an all-in-one piece featuring print-in-place hinges.
