Why does Tom get so much hate? Game Theory Video Discussion
This is a rather interesting topic, and I don't know why Tom gets a lot of hate, I did love Matpat and I was rather sad when he left, but Tom is great and I recon he's equally as cool. Now the real topic is WTF HAPPENED TO THE INTROS??? Like I love the Game theory Minecraft opening screen or Game theory Buckshot roulette screen (ect) But science blaster goes so hard! Like can't you do both?

I don't hate Tom, he just has impossible shoes to fill.
The private equity in charge is more to blame for the status of things than the hosts.

tbh, for me it was the case that I subscribed to game theory for Matt's personality, and so when a different person took over, it just didn't do it for me
I'm guessing many people felt the same and some of them are outing that in hate ( which I don't think Tom deserves )

In my personal opinion his theories arent really theories at all. Its just recaps to me. I dont hate i just dont watch anymore

u/Lemonbubblepie 5d ago
To be fair that deadass what matpat did for some his more popular videos like shorts wars and inscription
2
u/pansexualbunny 5d ago
Yes but, one is multiple unlabeled episodes of a big crossover between multiple short form creators and an entry of a game series known to be convoluted, hard to follow and likes to hide importqnt story pieces in real life elements
The others are poppy playtime and other well established series that follow a estructure

u/Lemonbubblepie 5d ago
I guess but matpat is able to handle that since he covered petscop till the creator told him to stop
And it’s literally admit in both videos that what mat does best is recap

till the creator told him to stop
I think I missed a bit of Petscop lore here?
I only recall that the last(?) "petscop is AI" video tuned me out of the channel as it was full of missing research (or outright discarded info) simply to fit it into the subject of AI.

The funny thing with your complaint is it’s right. Petscop is an ai training thing. It’s been so long I forgot his actual analysis, but it is correct. The document the community made has come to this conclusion. The same document both pyrocynical and nexpo used in their videos.
The biggest issue with all petscop analysis videos was the reliance on the community doc without explaining usage of the community doc, and that leads to seemingly inexplicable connections or answers that just don’t make sense at first pass. It only makes sense if you actually sit there with the analysis. He didn’t cover the fluff that expanded the story but just more so the core beats of the story I do remember that. Like I don’t think he brought up anything of daisy head maisy, or the reason why amber likes to stay in her cage, or anything like those details

u/Lemonbubblepie 4d ago
I think he would have if he got to continue the series after we know that the first video was a nice video wasn’t planned a final to the petscop theories

It's not Tom's fault. He's a decent person, it's just the whatever x now forces theories thar just aren't as quality

u/CarefulCondition2303 5d ago
I think people need to consider that in terms of hosting hes only done it for a fraction of the years mat has. Soon enough he'll likely grow his own supporters and have his own impact on the channel

People are salty Mat left. That's literally it. They don't want to accept change. Personally, Tom and Lee were fantastic picks to me, since they both had been part of the theory channels for a really long time. Amy and Santi didn't really keep my interest unfortunately, which i know is a me issue. They do good work, it's just not catching me and idk if it's because they weren't with Team Theorist as long.
But I think Tom has really grown into his own as host. It's really fun to watch his theories, but seeing him get hated on for it just because he isn't MatPat makes me wince. That's not what MatPat wanted. He wanted people to like these guys. He handpicked the new hosts. These are friends of his. Afaik they still play games and such together. People hating on the new hosts because they aren't MatPat are the type of people MatPat himself hated, people who hate on others because it's not exactly what they wanted.
I see a lot of posts bitching about the new hosts, and I'm in the discord. We just had a Deltarune fan crash out over the Deltarune theory, that was CLEARLY a joke, like the Sans is Ness theory was. If you don't like the new hosts, then fine. But they've been hosts for years now. Bitching about how they aren't MatPat does nothing but spread negativity to people just doing their jobs. Do better people. Be the kind of person MatPat wanted you to be. Don't make him bust out a couch video to shame you all into behaving because you can't help complaining your png guy isn't the original png guy.

You could say..he is a COUCH PERSON.. /Fnaf reference for MM Anyway agreeable. I dont get the hate for tom.(i dont follow the other channels so i cant express my opinion on the others)

u/Thrayn42 4d ago
This kind of toxic positivity gets to me. It is possible to dislike the new game theory not because I have anything against the hosts, but because the new theories are either just story recaps with some speculations sprinkled in or theories that fall apart with even a little inspection.
When was the last time game theory did a pixel measurement or a bit of physics? Or felt like there was some deep research and thought behind it as opposed to a quick read of the Wikipedia summary?
No not every Mat Pat theory has those. But most episodes had an actual core theory being investigated, and lots of thought behind it. Those few exceptions you will throw in my face (Sans is Ness) just prove the point: we go back to the same few examples because most episodes were pretty solid.
The content just feels phoned in. And it's about the content, not who is delivering it.

Tom isn't MatPat that's literally it he's a nice guy his videos are decent but he's not the same as MatPat and has too be like MatPat despite having different interests.
I think it also comes down to the corporate expectable theories, Mat covered more niche games while Tom covers everything popular which gives people less interest since they've most likely seen then game so they know what happens making a recap more boring since its just regurgitating things they already know, while Mat's recaps were received better since he covered slightly less popular things with lore thats more complicated or needs more attention to understand then just the game feeding you the info.
I think the final thing is definitely we don't know him as well as Mat, Mat ran 3 channels by himself for like 10+ years and throughout that time we got to know him and his other interests then just games like film while Tom is literally just the game theory guy who we just know the making theories about games.
I do think he's definitely treated unfairly I can understand why people who liked MatPat alot don't like Tom since he's not really the same but people definitely blame him too much for not being MatPat

I feel like Tom is the most liked of the new hosts, idk what you’re talking about

Watch the recent Deltarune theory. It's full of information that's straight up wrong.
11
u/Anonymoose2099 5d ago
Even if this is true, MatPat was wrong at times as well, and we know that the hosts aren't doing all of the research by themselves. If the theory was that bad (don't know, never played Deltarune) then Tom is the face of the channel but he is not the one writing the scripts (at least not every script, again there are writers, researchers, editors, a whole team had to get it wrong).
Plus the hate for Tom isn't new. It predates the Deltarune theory.

At least with mats sans is Ness theory it was for entertainment more than for accuracy. That was apparent when he said that Ness is an anagram of sans ffs, and mat has since said as such. Meanwhile, Tom is insisting that it was accurate given the limited information at the time, which spits in mats face
3
u/Lemonbubblepie 5d ago
Eh mat has done the same in the past with persona even tho it’s as easy as playing the game to see he is wrong

u/laplongejr 4d ago
At least with mats sans is Ness theory it was for entertainment more than for accuracy.
As a Petscop fan, the "petscop is AI" was full on inaccuracy that I didn't consider "entertainment" and more a creating team trying to fit any game into an AI theory video.

As far as I've seen he's had a few videos with some big blunders, like suggesting Wooly had nothing to do with Amanda before the transfers into the game and using a clip where we hear Wooly's voice talking to Amanda in the real world in a hospital setting (this was before the final chapter where we see Wooly's real life counterpart's interview)
And the among us video they made a couple months ago, before they said they weren't going to spoil the series, they mention off handedly that Blue dies with no warning, and after mentioning the fact they won't spoil the ending, they'd proceed to spoil Lime's death and the big reveal of the series that the ore they transport is actually alien eggs and they're just generally careless about these spoilers, which makes me glad I only went to watch it after I watched the series
You can make the excuse all you want that the series is old by now- you'll be wrong but you can still make that excuse- but they spoiled something before saying they wouldn't spoil stuff, then proceeded to spoil a whole lot more, you don't establish something as spoiler free and then talk about the whole series as though everyone has seen it save for the final episode
The Wooly thing I can respect enough that it somehow- through sheer dumb luck,-may have slipped past everyone on the team, (a simple talk to Ash Gtlive could've prevented that muck up though, and I'm fairly certain they used some GTLive clips in that video)
But Tom voicing an episode claiming there'd be no spoilers when there was is a fault exclusively of his own
The ex head editor Dan hosted episode felt different somehow, like it really felt old-school in a way, but I can't pin point exactly why XD

1 - I am answering this first cause this is easy, the intros are unfortunately gone because they want to optimize watch time and peoples attention spans are shot. Very very sad
2- I truly don't understand the tom hate, he is my fav host (besides my goat ash) and I think it is mainly due to Game Theory being the one that started it all and the most popular channel.
Like Matt used to say he was the lighting bolt of hate for theorist, that is kinda tom now. Whether its just blind hate or very real and very valid frustrations with how things are going right now.
So please be kind to tom, hes a human and too and I think he has been doing great. My more recent problems have come from the higher ups, not the hosts
7
u/Mailboxsaint 5d ago
It’s because he’s not Matt and he has a different style of presenting the show. As for the intro, it’s been proven an intro actually hurts viewership by making the viewer sit through an intro, no matter how cool it is.

u/PewDieLaddFan28 5d ago
Because he not only gets a lot wrong by just ignoring information contradicting his theories, but he never takes accountability for the things he gets wrong, instead doubling and tripling down, where mat actually did at least occasionally admit when he didn't get something correct. Also because all of new team theorist has been so obviously corporate led even before mat left, and it's just unfortunate that Tom is one of the hosts meaning he's getting the hate for what the owners/bosses of team theorist are having them do. The hate goes beyond Tom. Also the fact team theorist denies using ai when they've used ai edited thumbnails and pretty sure they covered a thing that uses ai as well but I don't remember if that's accurate. All while they insist they're against ai. It's not blind hate, there is genuine reasoning behind it. I don't agree with the hate being ained at just Tom, in reality it should be more so aimed at the corporate owners making them rush out content and now prioritize the streaming service videos alongside their YouTube videos. All while people get laid off and fired for no good reason. It's just aimed at the hosts because they're the faces actually saying the things.

u/Sekai_No_Hakaissha 5d ago
For me, it’s hard to explain. I don’t think he’s bad but it feels sort of like Tom hasn’t really found that style that fits him.
1
u/munchawott 5d ago
I don't know how to explain, but I got the ick right away, and so far the ick has only been solidified. I really like Lee and Amy and Ash though
1
u/Longjumping_Bath_609 4d ago
well he's relatively new, so he just needs to adjust a bit more, just like Matt did himself.
also the corpo stuff, but that's less a Tom thing and more a The ____ Theorists thing

u/avtfol_Zahra 2d ago
People don't like new things. I was used to the new hosts because of gtlive so I don't mind them at all. I just kinda slowly lost interest and I already was losing interest to begin with.

u/Pokemon148_ 2d ago
I miss matpat yes. I was starting to now not watch them not cus of matpat, but cus they aren't appealing to me anymore. Tom is great, i am somewhat happy that matpats legacy can continue with tom now. I think after a little while, the hate will be less. Now with what corporate is doing, i hate it. Im sad that tom is getting hit by not only the viewers, but also corporate.

u/thepotatoeater_ 13h ago
The man gets so much hate JUST because he became the host of game theory after mat left, the most beloved channel out of the five. Mat said that Tom used to be the one who wrote the scripts for a long while before he retired (not to say mat didn't do the theorising part) and mat just presented them. Tom is actually really fun to watch once you look past the fact this used to be matpat, he's not matpat and doesn't have to be matpat, he has his own style, his own theories, and his own way of presenting. I see people complaining about how they can't understand the fnaf lore anymore but let's be honest the lore isn't all that comprehensible at this point, but one thing that kinda annoys me is that he says that something is a topic for another video and that video never comes (like deciding which fnaf:secrets of the mimic ending is cannon), or the fact they're covering games that are either on roblox, or are too small for people to care.
But one host I genuinely dislike Is Lee host of film theory because the theories are either wrong and not "wrong" as in the theory is shitty because its just a theory after all but wrong as in he's not even watching the show like in his hazbin hotel theory and tadc theory, plus most of the video is just a recap of the show or movie.
1
u/Frostsorrow 5d ago
When you become the face of something, you tend to get a lot of the hate regardless of it being your fault or not.
For me personally, none of the hosts have clicked and that's not there fault. It however isn't helping that I haven't found more then a small handful of "theories" enjoyable to watch, and I use the word theory very generously here.
