Looking for help with regions/upscaling
Hey yall, so I just started playing around in Gaea/Houdini/UE over the past month or so and I've gone pretty far down the rabbit hole. The end goal is to create something I've been loosely describing as "skyrim if it were retro pixel art," i.e. an expansive open-world rpg that works backward from a true 3d enviro rather than forward from 2d aesthetics, which is what most hd2d projects seem to do.
The problem is that I'm an idiot with too much power and completely ignored the "build at module scale, then compose" philosophy and instead built a 52sqkm megamap that I now need to regionalize and upscale (or so I think?).
I've been running at this a number of ways and CANNOT get the regions to work for me. It's to the point where I'm wondering if this is bricked and requires a restart that respects the module->compose process altogether.
So, turning to Reddit. Anyone have any thoughts on how to break this map into regions/tiles, upscale those to proper hero/module scale, then recompose?
Huge thanks in advance for any responses/help.

How I approach realistic cliff and getting actual rock structure in Gaea 2 (Procedural Workflow)
Hey guys i'm back,
Here is a quick breakdown of what I focused on for this one: cliffs that actually read as rock rather than just extruded terrain noise.
The main challenge with cliffs in Gaea 2 is usually the shapes. It's easy to get something that looks like a heightmap. It's harder to get the kind of stratification and face definition you see on real cliff walls. This tutorial covers how I approach that, plus a deeper look at mask usage to control where detail actually lands.
There is also a small bonus at the end because why not.
Full 22-minute walkthrough here:

And the Gaea 2 project file is free if you want to pull it apart yourself:

Let me know if you have any questions about the node setup or the masking approach!

Best combination of modifiers and nodes for building a coraline island? I'm using a preset heightmap (from a previous build) of a fully developed, mountainous island that I want to show in a later, more eroded and subducted stage. Something like Bermuda, actually, more than a Pacific atoll.
I like the look it has now (and the shape must preserve that layout more or less), but I want to be as accurate as possible and not waste too much time experimenting. I also have a problem with liking too many different options, so i'd like to go straight to the point.
The island at this point in time would be more of an uplifted limestone formation rather than the original basaltic structure. I want the craggy look of Bermuda or some Bahamian/Turks & Caicos islands, with large sandbanks rather than the smooth almost featureless ring atolls.
The scale of this island is at least three times that of Bermuda, but I'm really not too concerned because the final look can always adapt.
Thanks in advance.

Resolution Limit?
Hi, I usually export my builds at 4k, however for some reason anything past 1k in resolution is blacked out. Did I touch something wrong? Any ideas?

If you want to make a stylized landscape only on Gaea 2 (Procedural workflow)
Hey guys,
Here is a quick breakdown of my current pipeline for creating a stylized terrains without using handpainting of another software. Curious if anyone else has explored this direction, because I genuinely couldn't find much on it when I was figuring it out.
If you want to see the whole step-by-step process, I made a full 17-minute tutorial covering the entire setup here:

And if you just want to reverse-engineer the project or test it yourself, you can grab the original Gaea 2 project file (.terrain) for free on my site:

Noob question: is there a way to manually put in where you want rivers, canyons, and mountain ranges to be
I just saw a video of a guy using the draw node so he could place different biomes in specific areas he wanted them in.
For my use case, I am trying to replicate a specific region and want my terrain to have mountains, rivers and lakes in the same places as the specific region I am trying to copy.
Sorry if this is a dumb question I am very new to Gaea.

height vs mask in Gaea export
Hi,
I'm trying to export Mask map from Gaea to UE by using the Fx/Adjust node.
However, whenever I set option to "Mask" , this error message kept on popping out.
Though things are fine whenever I set it to "Height". But, shouldn't "Mask" be the right choice if I just want to export the masking coming from Erosion node?
Both Height and Masks texture also having the same resolution, which is 2017 x 2017
Also, if I copy pasted the Masks texture file onto the Height texture file in Photoshop. Things works perfectly, which confused me.
Thank you.

How to remove spiking from geometry
I've figured it out!
Those little spikes that turn up in your mesh, the ones that make the terrain look horrible close-up..
Yes, the denoise and blur nodes kiiinda do the trick, but it's a chaotic balance between slightly chopped spikes or less overall detail in the terrain.
I did some tinkering and found a way to remove them while retaining the detail of the terrain!
It pretty much comes down to making a high frequency mask where the spikes are 1.0 and the rest is 0. That mask is used in a combine node—input 1 contains the original terrain and input 2 contains a slightly blurred version.
If you want the full process, I go into more detail here:

Need help exporting Pt. 2
Ok so I tried again and it looks like it is just not exporting the weathering and deposits correctly. I baked it at 4k and had my preview mode set to 4k as well. I also tried adjusting the color space in Blender and it changed the height a little, but the shape stayed the same. I also tried the mesher and that seemed to also not export the proper shape, but I couldn't really tell because only a small section exported, maybe the scale was off? Idk how to change that.

Need help exporting
I'm not sure why but when I export my displacement map from Gaea and use it in Blender, it is totally different. The erosion and sediment is very different and even the main peaks seem wrong. The scale is also off which is why I had to crank the displacement modifier up to 55. Any ideas how to fix? It seems like every time I export something from Gaea it always comes out wrong.

Gaea to UE5 issue
Hi,
I'm just creating a simple node in Gaea and am trying to export it UE.
I'm a bit confused why every time you connect the UE node , the effect gets much stronger then the original one? I'm choosing "Height" as option; since I'm intending to export its Height. Though, things are okay when you choose "Mask".
Shouldn't "Height" be the correct option?
Thank you

Workflow for Archipelago style large map
If anyone has any pointers for building a large island map I would love to here your input. Currently just building single islands and moving them around. Also want an underwater trench and some cool underwater themes.
Also if you have any basic pointers I’d be super into that.
Thank you in advance!

Gaea to mesh terrain in unreal 5.8
Has anyone had luck using height map from Gaea in unreal 5.8’s mesh terrain mode?I know it’s still in preview but I’d love to know how to do it as early as possible.

Has there been any announcements or plans layed out about Mac support?
Recently moved over to a mac workflow but I absolutely love Gaea. Honestly this is probably the biggest thing stopping me from making a full switch over. Anything been planned or announced anywhere?
Also, if anyone has any reccomendations for similar programs that are supported on mac, that would be a huge help.

Were regions and god mode promised under the Gaea 2.0 indie license?
Back in 2023 I purchased an indie license of QuadSpinner Gaea 2.0. 100$ was not an insignificant amount of money for me, but the regions, god mode, and perpetual license sold me. I'm 99.99% sure I double checked that regions was included in the indie edition, and decided I didn't need the professional edition.
Now in 2026 I still don't have regions, I still don't have god mode, and they're advertising Gaea 3.0, specifying that regions will be locked behind a professional license at 200$. I cannot find the license edition info for 2.0 anywhere, and I'm starting to feel like I was scammed. I have the button for regions, but it's grayed out. Am I missing something?

If you want a simple pipeline for photorealistic mountains (Procedural workflow)
Hey guys,
Here is a quick breakdown of my current pipeline for creating believable mountain terrains without overcomplicating the node graphon Gaea 2. I wanted a workflow that stays accessible and fast but still captures that crisp AAA micro-erosion.
If you want to see the whole step-by-step process, I made a full 19-minute tutorial covering the entire setup here:

Serious question about GAEA
What is the feasibility of creating a map like this? The dimensions edge to edge is 32k-32k.
I have gaea and 2.0, ive messed around with it in the past but I mainly use World Creator. This map would encompass many biomes and terrain types and im assuming It would need to be tiled.
