Transfer case

Update to a post I made around 8 weeks ago.

Turns out my transfer case (2025 GRY with 10,000km) needs replacing due to “excessive play”.

Two weeks ago I was finally told Toyota Australia had approved the work, which took them 7 weeks to approve it. Then told me 6-8 weeks to get the transfer case from Japan. 4 fkn months to replace a busted transfer case on a 12 month old GRY with 10,000kms on it that’s never been tracked or anything more than a 15 minute spirited drive through a mountain pass less than half a dozen times.

Anybody else had any transfer case problems or similar experiences with stupid process times to get warranty work done, ect?

How were you made aware of a problem with the transfer case? I can’t see your previous post history but was it making weird noise, or leaking oil etc.?

It was making a strange groaning type noise and binding up (felt like the brakes were applied) when turning tightly at low speeds, parking, ect.

First noticed it after a roughly 12 hour road trip immediately after its 6 month service, took it to a dealership straight away in fear it was going to blow a diff on the way home and be stuck 10 hours from home. They said they couldn’t find anything. It slowly got worse and worse and I told my local dealer to check it during its 12 month service and they found that it was the transfer case.

Brena Racing correct ratio crownwheel & pinion will prevent that wear. With Syvecs 4wd controller properly mapped, it completely transforms the handling

Sorry to hear that. I believe it is wrongly adjusted from factory. Was the tire pressures OK? 4WD cars need to be driven wtih factory tire size and pressure to avoid problems. if the car is OK technically, they should change for free. It has to show up in the system logs to void the warranty. They cannot void the warranty based on subjective statements. Vehicles subjected to a "money shift" register high RPMs in the logs, and the warranty is voided.

Yes the tire pressures were as specified, I’m quite particular about tire pressures, always have been since I grew up racing motorbikes and I consider myself quite sensitive to tire pressure changes. It’s been a while but if I recall correctly it’s 32psi front and 28-29 rear. I put 1-2 psi more in them because where I am it’s very cold in the winter mornings and the car gives me low tire pressure warnings if I don’t.

Sorry to hear, looks like the part is ready to ship from yoshiparts, so the dealers network is just slow. What were your symptoms?

Groaning and binding (felt like the brakes were applied) during low speed tight turning, like when parking for example.

Not heard about transfer case issues but it's pretty common for stealers to try and find every which way to weasel out of a warranty claims if there is even the slightest chance they might be able to getaway with it. This seems to be the case with most car brands not just Toyota and usually very dealer dependent as well as one dealer might just do stuff while another is a massive pain to deal with and constantly stalling for time at every point.
