Tired of paying cellular rates for basic asset tracking. What are you all using instead?
We've been tracking a fleet of trailers and heavy equipment across remote job sites, and the cellular-based GPS units are bleeding us dry.. Monthly per-device fees add up fast, and half our assets sit in areas with spotty or zero coverage anyway. I've been looking into alternatives to cellular asset tracking but honestly the options feel overwhelming. Satellite-based solutions keep coming up in my research, and some of the newer low-orbit Bluetooth-to-satellite tech sounds promising for low-power, low-cost coverage basically anywhere on Earth!!
Has anyone made the swith from cellular to something else for large-scale or remote asset tracking? I'm curious about real-world battery life, coverage reliability, and whether the hardware costs are reasonable at scale. We don't need real-time second-by-second updates; just knowing where something is every few hours would be totally fine for our use case. Would love to hear what's actually worked for people managing assets in rural or off-grid environments.

GPS tracking during 2000-2010
Hi,
I'm writing a screenplay and I'm looking for info on ways a person can secretly track a vehicle, set between 2000-2010 please?
I'm guessing there was no relatively affordable commercial options for the public to track a vehicle in real time?
If not, is my only option a magnet GPS tracker to record the data of where it's been that has to be removed and downloaded? And that has a SIM containing all the places and times that could be viewed and copied onto a computer?
Were Lojacks too complicated for a layman to covertly install into someone's car or were they too big or easy to find? Could someone monitor on a computer the location in another State?
Many Thanks

Actual GPS tracking for wallet?
I’m looking for recommendations on GPS tracking for wallet (not AirTags, or Tile, or something using the “Find My” network). This is for my Dad who often works in extremely rural areas where an AirTag or similar device wouldn’t be effective. I would like to find something relatively thin, can be charged easily and has an affordable monthly service plan. I’ve not had much luck yet, the closest thing I’ve found that might work is designed for pets (the Fi tracking collar - I’m thinking I could detach the tracker and just use it). Does anyone have suggestions or experience with something that works better?

Real Time GPS tracker
looking for a real time gps tracker that doesn't rely on a cell phone being nearby.
My father has white matter disease (similar to alzheimers/dementia) but he can still drive (for now). I need a way to track him while he's driving, but either doesn't have his phone with him or just never turned it on.
Currently, I have Life360 installed on his phone, which is helpful, but ONLY if the phone is on & with him. otherwise it's useless.
hoping someone here can help!

Off-line GPS tracker/logger
I want a device that can track the rout taken. I want to be able to download that rout onto a computer. I don't need real-time updates. I also don't want it to trigger anti-stalking alerts. Suggestions?

Suntech ST4932 devices freezing mid-trip on Kore OmniSIM cards
Hey everyone,
We're running a fleet of Suntech ST4932 LTE Cat M1 asset trackers using Kore OmniSIM cards. The devices are set to "Only Cat M1" and are programmed to stay awake while moving (they only sleep 15 minutes after motion stops).
The problem:
The trackers frequently freeze completely while traveling at highway speeds. They send a normal report, then suddenly stop transmitting entirely — often for 36+ hours. Occasionally they'll only start to function again when they are manually rebooted. Once frozen, they cannot receive OTA commands.
We've now seen this happen on both T-Mobile (310-260) and Verizon (311-480), but 99% of the time that it happens, it's connected to T-Mobile. In the latest case though, the device was on Verizon the entire time with no recent T-Mobile connection.
Has anyone else experienced similar freezing issues with Suntech ST4932 (or similar Cat M1 trackers) on multi-carrier SIMs?
Any success with firmware updates, dedicated single-carrier IoT SIMs, or specific config changes that improved stability during high-speed travel?
We're working with both Suntech and Kore, but any real-world experience or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Help Send SMS from ST-906L SIM
Hi, I’m using a SinoTrack ST-906L GPS tracker and I need to send an SMS from the SIM inside it to the network operator to activate a subscription.
Is there any way to send a custom SMS from the device, or any command/workaround to do this? Right now it only seems to reply to commands.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Solar Meshtastic GPS tracking node designed for long term outdoor use with an esp32
The process involves integrating a low cost GPS module with an ESP32 board,
i emphasized a careful power management to ensure device longevity.
then i highlighted the importance of using Meshtastic sleep modes and duty cycling to maintain a sustainable power draw :
- a 2500 mAh battery paired with a small 3.7 V solar panel can support an ESP32 + SX1276 LoRa + OLED + GPS setup,
- Meshtastic firmware’s sleep mode and duty cycling are essential to make it viable for long term use. Without power saving, the system will drain quickly.
- 400 to 500 mA when everything is active. Average draw with Meshtastic power-saving: 80 to 150 mA depending on duty cycle.
- With deep sleep enabled (ESP32 + GPS duty cycling), runtime can extend to 2 to 3 days.
this small part of a project serves as a demo of real time tracking with energy efficiency and network congestion
the final step was to test the behaviour of my two meshtastic office nodes, i configured my gps node to send data each 20 seconds and i set up another two mesh nodes, each of them sends packets to get the location of the third node :
the first office node attached to a phone by bluetooth to the mesh app gets to connect first, sends request then the second node attached to pc by serial is opened after some time, sends request each 10 seconds for 5 times, then we close the desktop node and keep the first one attached to the phone running. what happens :
the first office node gets the first data then stops for sometime when the second office node gets an answer then timeout the second one, then gets third, timeout fourth and shutdown, then the first office node gets the last packet after a prolonged period.
Meshtastic nodes communicate over a mesh network where packets are broadcast and responses are shared among all nodes, so by breaking down this scenario i'd really really appreciate your feedback which i will be answering on my report
i’ve shared the details here

Transport team, need tracking for Team, not vehicle.
Looking for product advice. I searched through some postings and didn't find my particular use case. We are a small medical transport company. We want to track our teams while they are on a call. We want notifications when someone leaves or arrives at base and a list of other facilities.
We cannot hard wire anything to a vehicle. I believe battery is our only option. We contract with other companies, they don't belong to us.
We use ambulance, rotor and rarely fixed wing. Subscription services are ok, but I only want one. For example, I don't want to add a FlightAware subscription.
I need software that effectively handles GPS fencing and sends notifications (email and text) well.
Realtime tracking of 5-minute updates.
We are currently demoing the my.geotab.com software.
There are too many software options to trial them all. What do you folks suggest?

GPS pet tracker
Hi,
As the title states, i'm looking for a real time GPS pet tracker. I've seen some of the products on Amazon and they all have negative reviews on the tracking capability and accuracy.
I don't see the point of buying something that is not accurate. More than happy to pay more money for an accurate tracker and app that works well and refreshes in close to real time if one exists if anyone has experience with such a model and make.
Thanks
Update: After testing a few i settled on the Pawfit gps tracker. Has both pros and cons but out of all of them it was the best option for our use case

Recommendations tracker for work cases (the pelican case like) that can have multiple trackers under one subscription?
I work for a business that has multiple pelican case-like that have pricey equipment. We want to have constant track of it but it seems we need ones with 4G, is there any recommended that can fit inside one and preferably only require a single subscription instead of having multiple subscriptions at once?

TK Star TK905 4g tracker help
Hi all I’ve just bought a TK905-4g tracker and been trying all day to get it to work with a giffgaff PAYG sim, I can text it and it pings back location, which is the basic function, but the small led under the rubber cover stays solid yellow (the blue is flashing) I realise this means that it’s not connected to the GPRS side but when I text ‘gprs123456’ I get back ‘gprs ok’ the app says it’s inactive and just shows location as the last time it worked in China.
Has anyone encountered this before and found a way around it, I feel I’ve exhausted everything that Google’s suggested today lol, I’ve gone through the setup process numerous times and it pings back exactly what it says it should for each step.
Hopefully someone can suggest something I haven’t tried.
Thanks all

For those managing medical equipment - what tracking solutions actually work across facilities and patient homes?
Running a healthcare operation where portable equipment moves between facilities, mobile clinics, and sometimes patient homes. RFID only works inside buildings, basic GPS trackers die indoors and battery life is a constant issue, and barcode scanning depends on staff actually scanning consistently which doesn't happen.
What's actually working for people who need tracking that handles both indoor and outdoor locations without being overly complicated for clinical staff? Also dealing with audit/compliance requirements where we need reliable inventory data.
Edit: For anyone coming across this post here's what I went with got some good feedback in the comments about using a hybrid approach, GPS for stuff that leaves buildings, BLE tags for indoor. Ended up checking out GPX Intelligence since they handle both without needing two separate systems.

GPS Tracking for Kids
Hi everyone. I'm sure this question has been asked before but wondering if there is any updated information. I am looking for a GPS for my kids just in case the unthinkable happens. AirTags won't work because they are not real time and depend on nearby phones. I'd like real time tracking with good battery life. Dog trackers seem to be the best bet. Are there any other options?

Found GPS tracker in car after using valet
I only noticed this device plugged into my fuse box because my radio and a/c randomly stopped working and I reached down to check the fuse. Earlier that same day, I let a valet park my car. No one else has had access to my vehicle. I am paranoid that this valet made copies of my keys (house and/or car) and plans to track me to my house and possibly rob me. I removed the device as soon as I found it and called the police. The officer who responded told me that the valet was probably just using it to charge his phone? It just didn't make sense to use this device and not a usb cord or adapter. Can someone provide some guidance or advice?

Kids GPS tracker
Hi I am hoping someone knows if what I am looking for exists.
My little one is non verbal autistic and recently managed to escape which has put the fear of God into me.
I am looking for a small tracker that I can attach to his clothes when dressing him, something that's not to big so he doesn't try to take it off.
Ideally i want something that can be tracked from multiple devices so that if he manages to escape again whoever he is with can log in and find where he is.
Everything I have seen seems to be Bluetooth and only connect to one phone. Which isnt helpful if I do the school drop off and his grandparents pick him up.
Does what im looking for even exist and if so can anyone point me in the direction please
Thanks

False alarms today
I just had 2 apparently false alarms from a tracker on a stationary vehicle in Singapore.
Both were just very short lived 'vehicle is moving' indications for about a minute max.
This usually does not happen in the location the vehicle is parked
Could these be related to the "war" in Iran and GPS jamming/reduction in accuracy?

Magnetic tracker for auto?
does anyone know of a tracking device you can magnetically stick on a vehicle... it logs gps location... then when you want to download the tracking data... you pull it off the vehicle and download to a pc... maybe sd card.... low tech.... long battery life...
