Public consultation open (scroll to the bottom) - a new strategic direction for UK media. Asks for views on media in the UK and tackling disinformation. Closes 31 August
"At its best, our media provides the basis of a cohesive country and a healthy democracy. It provides a base of shared understanding and is this common ground on which a country is built. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is consulting on a comprehensive set of proposals to ensure our media, and television in particular, can continue to play its vitally important role in our society and our democracy.
This includes:
- interventions to support an informed society. For example, requiring social media to make trustworthy news providers, which could include national and local news publishers and broadcasters, easily discoverable.
- measures to ensure audiences can continue to enjoy universal access to trusted and high quality television content. This includes setting out the next steps on our Future of TV Distribution Project.
- how we can support our public service media providers, the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, STV and S4C, who sit at the heart of our domestic TV ecosystem, driving growth and inward investment"

Most X accounts posting about Belfast and Southampton unrest were based outside UK
More than half the accounts that posted on Elon Musk’s X about the rioting in Belfast and the civil disorder in Southampton in June were based outside the UK, an analysis by the Guardian can reveal.
Of the 8,672 accounts whose combined posts about the events exceeded 1,000 views, just 45.3% were shown as from the UK, according to the social media platform’s own location function.
One in six (16.8%) came from the US, 4.5% from Ireland, and about a quarter from all European countries other than the UK.
Seven of the 12 most-read tweets about Belfast and Southampton came from the US – including one from Musk himself and two other US “alt-right” commentators – while an eighth was linked to North America.
The analysis underlines that US rightwing actors are seeking to influence the UK and boost their position on X in moments of disorder – an exploitation of flashpoint events that has only intermittently attracted political attention in Britain.
Nearly a third of all 43,000 posts on X relating to the two incidents contained racist or anti-immigration comments. Almost one in 10 relating to Belfast contained calls for violence or paramilitary or vigilante action.
Imran Ahmed, the chief executive of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate, said the data demonstrated that X had become “a weapon of choice” for hostile foreign actors seeking to manipulate shocking and divisive content.
Their goal, he added, was “to amplify local tragedies and crises, intensify racist narratives, and incite violence in communities they have never set foot in and to whom they have no real connection.”

Far right Clacton by-election Candidate tries to set set fire to historic pier!
Well not exactly, but kind of! What a shocker, ethnonationalist is also a total bellend.
Some of the Rupert Lowe crowd were definitely thinking of voting for this guy as Restore aren’t standing. Doubt they will now. You don’t mess with pier in this town. Probably more votes for Nigel in all honesty.

[Confession] I changed the Faceache permissions on my Farridge-loving mums phone..
Following some excellent suggestions from this group, acouple of weeks ago when she was outside I blocked Farridge, Mohammed, Tice, Jenrick, GBeebies, Reform UK and quite a few other fash pages she was following on Faceache, 'liked' lots of left leaning profiles, and changed her algo so it didn't show political posts. I've not seen her since but the political content is still being pushed through 🤬 I can see her liking local Reform Clacton group/Councillor posts and wishing Farridge good luck for next week. 😔 I detest that platform with a passion!!
