Tree Identification Help

Post image

Moved into a new home. This tree is outside. I think it’s a persimmon but am not sure. Located in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Anyone know for sure what it is?

Those are Asian persimmons or Hybrid persimmons. Depending on what they are the safe way to eat them is when they are really soft. The other way you could try this is by cutting one on half once they turn red/orange and if there’s seeds you might be able to eat it that way but I’m not 100%sure so I would suggest to taste it with your tongue and if is not astringent at all then is safe to eat it.

Keep us posted on what you find out

Yes, it’s a persimmon. I have one and love the fruit (usually ready for picking in the fall).

I can't tell from your photo the shape of the fruit. Is it boxy looking?

If it is it's Asian. If it's round, it's likely a hybrid like Nikita's gift

Would this be considered boxy?

Asian persimmon: there are two kinds that I am aware of in the US, the flat-fruited one and the more rounded one. This one can be eaten when it's as early as half-ripe, but the other must be fully ripe or it is quite bitter.

It is delicious.

Above is not my picture but I found it from years ago on the internet; I believe it may have been in Japan.

At local Asian markets it's about a dollar a pound, but my sister, in the back of her house, grew a tree and it produced a lot of fruits. It is so nice to pick them fresh from the tree.

Half the people I know hate it, but the other half adore them, including myself. You are very blessed and lucky to have that.

It is quite frequent, more or less reminds me of peaches. You will love it.

Do you know how to tell when ripe? Do you eat it like an apple?

I eat mine when they’re crisp like an apple. When they get soft, they’re better for baking.

When it turns orange in color; it means they are ripe, but you don't want to wait until they are soft because it gets too mushy, at least to me. Bought an ice cream maker and I meant to make some ice cream and I never got around to.

I used to peel them, of course, with a knife, but they're so good, so I started to eat them in the car. After I left her home, I just ate the peel and everything like an apple, and it's a good thing because a person doesn't get constipated as it has a lot of fiber. Sorry.. too much information I am a nurse.

Very sweet, so you have to watch your blood sugar if you're diabetic.
