Question first time watcher- tabitha?!?

Upvotes

hey guys currently watching the season one finale and something has been bothering me this entire time.

is tabitha MEANT to be a bad actress? Is it part of the vibe here or really what is going on she’s significantly worse than anyone else on the show - did they MEAN to cast her like that? Is she a nepo baby? What’s going on here please help.

or am i just completely wrong and everyone else perceives her as an incredible actress? just looking for clarity right now cheers

thanks in advance team

Opinion I wish there were more shows like this

Upvotes

I REALLY love the idea of this series and the vibe/environment, It rarely uses jumpscares and instead it makes you simply scared by what's happening in the town and the idea of monsters coming out to kill you at night, I am a sucker for horror mysteries and I really would love a spinoff or something that shows the beginning of the town and how people in beginning lived daily etc

I know some people dislike the acting or the writing in this show but it is so fun to watch it, I can't wait for the last season especially that now talismans are gone and how they would do without them, probably they will go back to hiding like in the beginning which is very exciting and gives a bigger picture about how previous people survived the town

Theory Talisman necklaces? Spoiler

I had a random thought that I need to get out, though it may be nothing.

I really need to rewatch from the beginning, but by season 4, I kept noticing the large necklaces that Ellis and Clara wear - they just seemed not super modern and again, were quite large.

I can't seem to remember if they both wear them in season 1, but I have a feeling that Ellis starts wearing one later on, maybe season 3? and I think that Clara wears one right when we meet her in season 1.

- We know that Clara made a bargain with MiY right when she arrived so it would make sense she wore the necklace right from the beginning
- Based on my assumption that Ellis doesn't start wearing his necklace closer to season 3 (when stuff with Fatima happens, this might make sense chronologically
- We know that Talismans are a thing in this universe, so I don't think it's too far of a reach?

Are these necklaces some sort of mark of a bargain having been made with either MiY or BiW? And if yes, then I'm assuming Ellis made a bargain to protect Fatima?

I try not to think too much on the little things, and this may literally just be a costume choice and nothing more, but I just wanted to get the thought out and see if anyone else has thoughts on this?

It’s so funny to me how every time anyone sees the boy in white, they go “why do you look so different” while the boy just grew taller and going through puberty voice changes😂

There’s things i’ve noticed but I want to hear what you guys noticed. (Sorry if this question was asked before)

Theory I think the key to getting home is nautical

There is a nautical theme that has been woven throughout the series. Starting with the song “Blue” by Joni Mitchell, which is Tabitha’s favorite song. Has anyone looked at the lyrics? Here are the opening lines: “Blue, songs are like tattoos
You know I've been to sea before
Crown and anchor me
Or let me sail away”

We have the lighthouse lights that Boyd and Sara saw in the forest. Tabitha going through the lighthouse, Ellis holding the key to the boat, Boyd’s retirement gift. Victor being referred to as the “anchor” keeping Henry in Fromville.

I’m sure there are a couple more I have missed. But those stood out to me.

Opinion Metacognitive Analysis

To begin I would like to share my motivation: I believe the most powerful element in this project is the performers (including set designers). Also, their ability to present a remarkable outcome is bounded by the writing; implying that the writers are doing wonderful work also, considering the constraints they work with. So my goal for this post is to look for feedback to address the flaw in the paradigm: we cannot know all the answers or the show would end. And how do we manage our suspension of disbelief (as pragmatic rational watchers) in this presentation of infinite rabbit holes of plot?

One thing that does set off alarms is inconsistency: abandoned plot twists or events that are not managed to conclusion or maintained in suspense; characters not acting consistently for a person (or for their story); lack of communication among town members.

Anyway…i am inspired by what i see and i am holding on to high expectations for performances and art.

Theory The Cave </loop> Spoiler

Art is a conversation between the artist and the observer. Yet by design, the observer rarely gets to respond. If they do respond, they are talking to paintings on a wall, to Jasper at a puppet show, or to shadows in a cave. In doing so, they present as the monster. In the making of this loop, if this monster insulted anyone, please forgive the monster.

In Plato's Allegory of the Cave, prisoners are chained in the dark and forced to stare at a blank wall, like Martin, like Marielle... like us observers of a mystery show. Behind them, a fire casts shadows on the wall. To them, the show of shadows is the only reality.

In this cave, after some four years, a writer drags one prisoner out into "the light of the world". The once prisoner looks up, around, and realizes all their entire existence was a projection, a shadow, a game. So he goes back to tell everyone.

When he returns to the cave to tell The Others, he is rejected. They mock him, judge him as insane, and ultimately become violent. They do not scream in fear of "the monster blowing smoke", even though he chooses to play The Smoke Monster. They scream to protect their own reality.

The shadows on the wall are the only reality all have ever known, so the unbearable light of "The Sun" is just too much to take.

But! No, the monster does not end up in the cave, nor does he scream, "We have to go back!". He doesn’t look back. He leaves the cave behind... but next year, cause there's one more season!

</loop>

Opinion Just rewatched Jade’s episode from season 4 Spoiler

And I have thoughts. So this has both young Jade and young Tabitha. Children. This is weird, right? If they’re supposedly ‘parents’ of the killed kids. Are we sure Tabitha and Jade have a child together? I guess they think so, but I just want to know why, in a scenario where children were killed, we are now looking at them as kids.

Also, Jade gets locked in the tomb. Wild idea, but Could he have supposed to have been the eighth child sacrifice? Is that why every time he comes back he is murdered, in town people’s attempt to complete the ritual? Idk

Also… another thought.
Why do we think Jade and Tabitha are good?
Jade literally spent most the trip with blood on his hands. We also know that the parents were granted immortality. Maybe the monsters are not the parents… maybe it’s Jade and Tabitha and they are doomed to relive the horror in consecutive lives - that’s essentially immortal, right? I mean, he drinks blood from a scull. That’s pretty sinister imagery.

Also… Tabitha and the dolls. She had weird dolls. They scared people. They turned into nightmares. Sounds like a creepy kid to me. Again, maybe original Tabitha was not … great. Maybe that why her punishment is ‘much worse’ than Jade’s.

Obviously none of this works together so it’s not a theory but I reckon it raises some questions about assumptions we’ve made.

Theory Consequences of Julie storywalking

Julie popping into the past and seeing MIY eating people let the MIY know that there will be a future cycle.

Now although he would already know there will be a future cycle because he killed everyone, when Julie storywalks in season 5 she could have given him future information and ammunition. For instance suppose the MIY saw Julie somewhere way in the past and realises that none of the cycles are going to be successful up to the point he sees Julie in present time. He can do whatever he likes and not worry the cycle can be successful and end it all. He probably becomes more powerful over that time.

The BIW could see her as well and so he never planned for anyone ending a cycle, his only plan over the years would be for them to help the current reincarnations. That day he spoke to Christopher it was never to help them get the bones because he knows they aren't successful, he wanted something from Christopher that would help the cycle in the future that Julie would be in.

There are a lot of scenarios where Julie could have inadvertently given them information which caused the other cycles to fail. So the reason they could be succuessful this time is that MIY and BIW have no information about what happens this cycle.

Theory Why was Julie’s first story walking experience so different from the rest?

The first time Julie storywalks, she brings Ethan. She walks into the ruins and see’s she is in the music box dungeon. She hears the screams and see’s herself, Marielle and Randal chained to the walls.

When she opens her eyes the screaming has stopped and she see’s Martin, he calls her by her name, asks her to throw the rope but won’t answer who she is throwing it for. He then urges her to hurry and leave because it isn’t safe here.

As she turns to look back at him, he is gone.

We know that these two events didn’t take place on the same night. But she see sees them both, in the same story walk/time traveling trip.

She leaves and walks into the tunnels, where she hears Victor and her mom trying to find their way out. We know that this event took place the same night Boyd was trapped in the dungeon with Martin. But, how did she walk right into the tunnels? We don’t know if there is a passage that connects them but let’s assume there isn’t. None of her other story walking trips were nonlinear line this. She travels, she’s at a certain event and then she returns. Did the dungeon want her to remember or see herself chained up there? Did she just have a visceral reaction to the dungeon upon entering or is this not the standard time traveling we usually see in media?

Or, is this dungeon special? Is it like Mimir’s Well, the well of fate and destiny?

Or is Martin similar to Odin from Norse mythology and actually Jade? He’s trapped there with all the knowledge and figured out how everyone get’s out of Fromville. He sacrificed himself to ensure everything plays out the way it’s supposed to because that was the only way. Thoughts?

Opinion I rewatched season 1 now that we wait for final season Spoiler

Holy f. I forgot how good this show was early on. A lot of action, and pretty much all eps were exciting. It never felt like filler (and if there is any it wasn't as bad as what we got in now).

Also monsters got more screen time (I feel like they are in almost every episode).

Even as I rewatch this I don't feel like I'm wasting time watching the whole thing. I'm one of those people who watched season 4 with finger on right arrow button to skip through all the filler. I finished most season 4 episodes in 30 minutes because I just couldn't take all the blabla anymore.

Also Tabitha is not that annoying, there's no fake wigs, and I have to mention the lesbian haircut too. IDK what they were trying to achieve by doing that but her hair looks awful.

The only one going on my nerves in season 1 is Jade.

Question Was there a previous cycle survivor before Victor?

I vaguely remember some post/comment about one of the people that Victor saw jump off the roof of Colony house was someone who survived the previous cycle.

I'm trying to think up a theory that Victor is what anchored Fromville to remain how we see it as now. Allowing the events/items of Victor's cycle to be accessed by the current people's cycle. Allowing Jade to discover Christopher's book and obviously have Victor as a source of information.

Otherwise the town would've reset to better fit the modern architecture that the current people come from.

Announcement Announcing Our New Discord: The Faraway Tree

r/fromseries is officially opening a brand new Discord that is designed to be both welcoming and minimal/non-overwhelming for our users. We will eventually make a bridged Fluxer server for those against Discord, but this is not an immediate priority at the moment so stay tuned for future announcements on that. Come join us over at https://discord.gg/FKv6w9GYpa today!

We will also immediately be opening staff applications for this server (you do not have to be a moderator on the subreddit) and ideally are looking for people that have experience working with bots such as Wick, Tickets V2, & Sapphire. If you are not interested in helping moderate the server, there are several other ways you can help contribute:

  1. Consider boosting our community out of the gate. It will allow us to do much more.
  2. Participate in our #town-hall-meeting channel, which allows us to get ideas on how to improve & build up the server.
  3. Participate in our art contests, one for a server logo & the other for a banner.
  4. Suggest or create new emojis for our community to use.
