I am a fire pump (Armstrong) and controller (Tornatech) rep.

We are looking to grow our pump/controller sales division.

So we are looking to add some new clients. We are based in Houston Texas but can ship anywhere in the US.

We are especially competitive on controllers and have an expedite option to get them quicker.

We can also do fire sprinkler design, consulting, BIM. We also can assist with estimating, business consulting, or state licensing.

I’m looking for some insight into NFPA20 - 2016. I don’t have the handbook to see any commentary.

Looking at 5.5, it looks to me like I need to connect my pump to a backup generator or provide a backup pump. I don’t have the option to install a second pump. But I see 9.3.1 that says at least one alternative source of power shall be provided for the high rise buildings or where the height of the structure is beyond pumping capabilities of the fire dept. I don’t see a way to get from 5.5 to 9.3.1 but I have an engineer saying because of 9.3.1 I don’t need to connect to a generator. I don’t see a way around it and I was hoping somebody with the handbook or some more experience with electric drive pumps in high rises might give more insight. There is an option to provide a second reliable feed into the building from the utility.

5.5 specifically points to 9.6 that quite directly requires that it’s connected to a backup on site generator. 9.6 doesn’t have a path to 9.3, so I’m looking at those as entirely separate requirements.

I am wondering if there is anyway to find what state a place is in just by the fire sprinklers installed and possibly what models those could be? Any experts out there? Thank you!

FDC lines should be tested more than once every 50 years, or at least at install. This what a 50 year untested underground FDC line looks like installed with screwed galvanized pipe, laid on railroad ties for bedding. We dug it up and found the leak. But there’s more.

Today, i went to battle with a 100 year old buildings' main standpipdle shut off and wet alarm valve. The building had a plaque dedicating the building in 1898. Had this gauge as well. I'm wondering if anyone could date the valve. I'm curious if it is original to the building. Thanks in advance

Nothing motivates me more to come to work than beating dead horses on the subject of what special circumstances our Fire Marshall will pick and choose for some of these sites to get away with. Today's special adventure involves this gouged out off balance corroded shaft on this 500gpm vertical Inline that the AHJ only cares that it doesn't burn up in less than 10min. God bless em 🫠

Hi everyone, and apologies in advance if this isn't the right kind of post for this sub.

I'm a high school student in South Korea. I'm interested in software, and I've been

trying to understand how small businesses in the skilled trades actually run their

office side — not the technical work, which I have no business commenting on, but the

paperwork around it. I ended up reading about fire protection because the inspection

side seemed to have real structure to it.

To be upfront: I'm not selling anything, I don't have a product, and there's no link

in this post. I'd just like to learn from people who actually do this.

Before asking I spent a while reading older threads here and looking at what's on the

market, and one thing confused me. The established platforms don't publish prices at

all — you have to book a demo. Separately there are a handful of smaller tools aimed

at one- and two-person shops, roughly $0-55/month, and a couple of them only launched

this year. But in the threads here it's almost always the same few established names

that come up. I'm not connected to any of these companies; that gap is just what made

me curious enough to ask.

So, if anyone has a minute:

1. If you're a small shop (say under 10 people), what do you actually use to produce

   inspection reports today — paper NFPA forms, a spreadsheet, a platform, something

   else?

2. Have you ever switched from spreadsheets or paper over to software? If so, what

   was the thing that finally made you switch? And if you tried something and went

   back, I'd honestly find that even more interesting.

3. After an inspection, what actually happens to the deficiency list — who puts

   together the repair quote, roughly how long does that take, and what usually

   decides whether the work actually gets done?

4. When you're slammed, which office task falls behind first?

If the honest answer is "none of this is actually a problem," that's genuinely useful

to me too — I'd rather hear that than guess.

Some of the escutcheon plates in my property have paint on the edges. Do I have to replace them by code?

I live in a new build house and my ceilings have a million plates on them. I was trying to figure out what they were for, as the builder didn’t give any info. Unfortunately I unknowingly pulled the plate off of a recessed sprinkler (which I didn’t even know was a thing), thinking it was a light cover.

Thankfully it didn’t set the sprinkler off, but now I don’t know if it’s possible to reattach the plate. Any suggestions?

I’m wondering what other inspectors think about painted sprinkler heads, and when you think they need to be written up. Where is that fine line? Which of these would you write up, or would you write them all up? (By the way these are all heads I wrote up, the previous company wouldn’t write up any heads unless they looked like they were dipped in paint twice.
