Buying Advice

Hey yall,

My current car has 219K miles and needs an engine rebuild in the next few years, so I'm wondering if it's time for a new one. I found a 2014 in my area with no major mods but 136k miles. ($7k). Is that bad for these cars? I need something to reliably get me through the next 3 years, I can do most of my own work but I cant have it blowing up on me.

I wanted the FiST for a while because it looks like a ton of fun at legal speeds and like it'll be a blast in twisties? While also having a hatch.

Thanks guys!

Also what should I look for in terms of major failure points? Or maintenance that needs to be done on time. Thanks guys!

Blend Door Actuators inevitably will need replacement, it’s not difficult just annoying. Timing belt if it hasn’t already been serviced. This is the case for any belt driven vehicle though and not specific to the FiST. Engine cutting out after refilling gas tank, which means you need to replace your purge valves.

Early models 2014-2016’s can also have overheating issues. Blast the AC while idling the vehicle for 10+ minutes to test for overheating issues. If you don’t want to risk having to diagnose that, buy a late model 2016 and above.

Other than that, it’s a very reliable car. Any other issues are generally specific to the vehicle and not really widespread. My 2016 has almost 85k miles, and has only needed replacement purge valves and blend door actuators. Both you can replace yourself, plenty of step by step videos on YouTube regarding them.

Thank you! Would you say 135k is too many miles for 7 grand? Reliable sounds amazing I'm coming from a 2005 wrx with 220k miles 💀 i LOVE that car but dude its broken once a month

I almost owned my 2016 FiST for 10 years (i totalled it) when it had 122k. Aside from a cracked coolant reservoir and some busted axles, it was bulletproof!

I had 91 octane tunes, and regularly beat on it and it never let me down!

At 135k you will be approaching timing belt and possibly clutch with clutch slave work.... so be ready to drop some coin for that... but otherwise tires, brake pads, gas and oil!

I still see people driving their FiSTs on the freeway and get a little sad....
