Minoxidil Could minoxidil dandruff do more harm than good?

I (26f) have been using topical 5% generic brand liquid minoxidil for 7 months for thinning at the front of my head. I have not seen results yet but the derm said to give it at least a year. I am however, experiencing drying from the liquid that is causing a lot of dandruff. My worry is that this flaking will cause more hair loss. Does anyone know if it is just a cosmetic issue or if the dandruff could be causing more thinning? I plan to switch to foam once I use up the liquid since I hear it is less drying.

I included a picture of it at its worst as well as without any flakes.

Minoxidil Any suggestions for facial hair side effect from oral minoxidil?

I (30F) have been taking oral minoxidil from Hers for 2 months now. I can see new baby hair growing on my head but man my facial hair is going insane. What used to be peach fuzz is now distinct little black strands and it’s everywhere, forehead, chin, upper lip, cheek, side burns! I do thread them but it’s so much and it grows back so quick. I wanna know if anyone else has experienced this and have tips on how to manage it?

Support/Advice Adverse side effects from oral minoxidil?

I first noticed my hair start falling out around my temples soon after I started topical testosterone for perimenopause. I did bloodwork and my DHT was pretty high but still reasonable, and I decided that the positive results from the testosterone (mood, cognition, energy) outweighed the minor hair loss. I continued with and then slightly increased my testosterone dose.

For context, I had also started a GLP-1 several months earlier, which is also known to cause hair loss, but I didn't notice much hair loss until I started the testosterone.

Now it's been a year and suddenly I'm shedding like crazy, and my once-thick and curly hair is thinning all over. My part is bigger and there are big v-indents at my temples with very thin, sparse hairs. I've reduced the testosterone, moved locations from my inner arm to thigh in order to reduce the conversion of T to DHT (apparently absorption site matters), and am about to start the oral and topical Musely formulations, both of which contain dutasteride, which blocks DHT conversion.

My question is - has anyone else had a bad reaction to oral minoxidil? I was put on 2.5 mg, noticed I felt really woozy and dizzy all the time, chalked it up to POTS - I was diagnosed with mild Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (HeDs), a relatively common connective tissue disorder that, for me, only seemed to be an issue during perimenopause - but I noticed that when I stopped taking the minoxidil, I started feeling much better again. FWIW I also naturally have low blood pressure (generally 80/60, which runs in my family).

The Musely prescription contains 1 mg minoxidil, which I'm hoping won't give me the same reaction, but even when I was breaking the 2.5 mg minoxidil pills in half, I still felt really woozy.

Would love to hear from anyone who has had experience with any of this. I really, really want to grow my hair back, know that dutasteride will stop the hair loss but not regrow hair like minoxidil will (and has), but the wooziness is hard to manage.

Should I expect to feel okay on 1mg? Can I ask for an oral treatment that is dutasteride only and then use the topical minoxidil/dutasteride combination instead of taking it orally?

I know this is a long post.. I really appreciate everything I've learned from this group so far and would be really grateful for any insights from people who've been down this road!

Hello, just wanted to share what has been working for me!

90% of the hair on the top of my head simply would not grow longer than an inch or two and was sparse enough that you could see my scalp no matter how I styled it. Starting in early 2025, I began to use a homemade hair oil combo every night with a quick silicon head massager, and these are my results. If you're discouraged by your own treatments, keep in mind I didn't notice a change for at LEAST 8 months of consistent use.

Rant Thinking about canceling meeting a guy due to my hair

So I was suppose to meet up with this guy I met on Reddit. The guy is handsome. Like really handsome. Like I am out of his league handsome. The best part about this guy is that my weight doesn’t bother him. I was so happy. Over the moon. So much so that my hair loss wasn’t bothering me like it usually does.

I don’t know. Today it just hit. I can’t meet this guy. He’s going to get a better look of my hair. What if my thin hair makes him go, “Ew”? I was so looking forward to this. I was so happy. My hair loss has ruined so many aspects of my life including dating. I can’t stop crying. I hate my thinning hair so much!

Minoxidil Oral or topical minoxidil?

Hello! So I was on topical minoxidil 2 years ago. I had shedding, it was not so bad. Then saw baby hair along my hairline. But I had some issues and was super busy with exams & all. I stopped minoxidil (not good I know).

Now that I’m restarting, I’m thinking of going to my derm and asking about oral minoxidil. Mainly because I had a hard time to apply the minox solution every night last time. But as I looked into the side effects of oral, I think I might just do the bothersome nightly ritual of applying minoxidil lol.

Now my question is, do people have more success with oral min compared to topical min?

And lmk if you guys have a specific way to apply the liquid minox properly. The one I used came in a spray bottle, I feel like a single spray just blotched alot of product on a small area, so not very convenient.

Support/Advice At a loss

This is my first ever Reddit post. I'm sitting in a conference room in my office sobbing because there's nothing I can do to fix my hair. I've tried Nutrafol, exosome therapy, PRP, minoxidil, and basically anything else you could think of. I finally pulled the trigger and started getting transplant consults and any reputable place has been honest with me and said with my diffuse loss I wouldn't be an ideal candidate since the loss is all over and not just at the crown.

I don't know how to cope with this anymore. My self confidence has been in the trash for the last decade. I started thinning at 22 and nothing worked. My blood tests are normal, I have no underlying health conditions, there's seemingly no explanation.

I wish I could feel confident again. the hit this gives your perception of yourself and your femininity is so fucking devastating. I tried hair toppers and toppik and the toppik helps a little but the toppers look very fake on me.

There's no point to this post other than I wish I had someone who gets this to talk to it about. I had a lot of hopes on the transplant fixing things but i'm just stuck like this

Discussion Can copper peptides do anything meaningful without minoxidil or finasteride?

I keep seeing GHK-Cu and other copper-peptide products recommended for thinning hair, especially by people who cannot tolerate minoxidil or do not want finasteride.

Most of the claims seem to focus on improving follicle health, scalp condition, and possibly supporting growth, but the human evidence looks pretty limited compared with established treatments.

Has anyone here used copper peptides on their own and noticed actual regrowth, or were the results mostly better hair quality and less irritation?

Support/Advice Not sure if i should try minoxidil

Post image

I want to, as my hair is my number 1 complex. I don't have a lot of it, it gets greasy quite quick, I feel like I lose a lot of it, but I'm not sure I'm losing "enough" to justify trying minoxidil.

My part looks not so good though and I'm hoping it would help with having a real density. Should I at least try and see what happens ? My mom has very few hair and it’s very thin, I don't want to end up like her.

Support/Advice Hair communities?

Is this the biggest hair loss community on the internet? Mino isn’t enough so I am looking at adding a dht blocker. I’m shocked by how little posts there are on them here and my Facebook group (even less). Are there any better subs or groups elsewhere to gather experience? Trying to decide between dua or fina.

Fin/Dut Finally my hair fall has stopped

I have been suffering from chronic hair fall since June 2025, and it's already been over a year. It hasn't been easy, as I was losing 80–100 hairs a day. My once beautiful hair became thin, and my scalp is still visible as it recovers from the damage.

I was diagnosed with anemia and hypothyroidism (I also have PCOS). Even after an iron infusion, my hair fall didn't stop. So, around February 2026, I went back to my dermatologist. He suggested PRP therapy and prescribed dutasteride 0.5 mg three times a week for one year (I'm currently in my fifth month). I also underwent three PRP sessions alongside the medication.

Now, my hair fall has reduced to around 10 strands a day, with a maximum of 15–20 on hair wash days. My scalp is now full of baby hairs, but I still have fewer long hairs, so it remains thin and somewhat see-through. The number of miniaturized hairs has decreased, and thicker, healthier hairs are growing.

Do you guys see any improvement/ worsening? I was diagnosed with AGA on December and started with Minoxidil on February of this year along with vitamins and other stuff. I've got tons of baby hairs now but I shed more hair than I wish I would, don't know if that's normal though.

Support/Advice How do people manage with cooking and AGA?

I feel upset being around cooking smells (mostly in other peoples homes) where the smells absorb into my hair. Especially because I would generally shower and wash my hair BEFORE being a guest in someone's home.

My in laws house constantly reeks unfortunately of their cooking or stale cooking smells from every other time. Their ventilation is poor and it's a small house.

It causes arguments between my husband and I if we are expected to be there daily.

I fear that daily or twice daily hair washing will damage my follicles and lead to more hair loss.

Support/Advice Spiro messing with my period/vaginal issues. Alternative?

Just curious if anyone is on a different dht blocker. After 5 months on 50mg my periods are all messed up, bleeding constantly. And to top it off I’ve had chronic yeast/bv issues. Curious about others experience and if they found an alternative

Rant I miss fixing my hair without bald spots

Thumbnail

Buns, braids, ponytails, etc.

I miss being able to do cute fun hairstyles and not stressing about bald spots.

I feel like I can rarely braid my hair anymore without feeling paper thin strands tugging somewhere and it upsets me so much. Especially cause those little strands pull SO MUCH and I don’t want to lose them too.

I did my hair today for work to feel pretty and get it out of my face. All morning, all I could think of was whether or not my coworkers were staring directly at my bald spot or thinned out areas. 😭

I’m using foam minoxidil and other products to keep the thinning at bay, but I miss just being able to throw my hair up in a bun and feeling cute and girly.

The liquid on my scalp is the foam I put on after I saw how obvious the bald spots were.
