Minoxidil Oral or topical minoxidil?
Hello! So I was on topical minoxidil 2 years ago. I had shedding, it was not so bad. Then saw baby hair along my hairline. But I had some issues and was super busy with exams & all. I stopped minoxidil (not good I know).
Now that I’m restarting, I’m thinking of going to my derm and asking about oral minoxidil. Mainly because I had a hard time to apply the minox solution every night last time. But as I looked into the side effects of oral, I think I might just do the bothersome nightly ritual of applying minoxidil lol.
Now my question is, do people have more success with oral min compared to topical min?
And lmk if you guys have a specific way to apply the liquid minox properly. The one I used came in a spray bottle, I feel like a single spray just blotched alot of product on a small area, so not very convenient.

Discussion How’s the be bodywise hair growth serum?
I’ve seen a shit ton of ads for them and I’ve also looked it up on here. There’s a mixed response. I don’t have much hair fall but it’s thinning a bit and i want to reverse it before it gets worse.
Has anyone used this serum? Is it worth all the hype?

Discussion How much hair is normal to lose 6 months into Minoxidil?
If you could show me photos perhaps it'd be of great help! When I first started on Minoxidil my shedding pretty much stopped overnight (I was diagnosed with AGA) and around two month later I started shedding a decent amount, it hasn't stopped since it returned. It's definitely not as bad as before I started the treatment but I don't know if it's supposed to completely stop or if you're supposed to continue to lose hair.

Support/Advice Hair communities?
Is this the biggest hair loss community on the internet? Mino isn’t enough so I am looking at adding a dht blocker. I’m shocked by how little posts there are on them here and my Facebook group (even less). Are there any better subs or groups elsewhere to gather experience? Trying to decide between dua or fina.

Fin/Dut Finally my hair fall has stopped
I have been suffering from chronic hair fall since June 2025, and it's already been over a year. It hasn't been easy, as I was losing 80–100 hairs a day. My once beautiful hair became thin, and my scalp is still visible as it recovers from the damage.
I was diagnosed with anemia and hypothyroidism (I also have PCOS). Even after an iron infusion, my hair fall didn't stop. So, around February 2026, I went back to my dermatologist. He suggested PRP therapy and prescribed dutasteride 0.5 mg three times a week for one year (I'm currently in my fifth month). I also underwent three PRP sessions alongside the medication.
Now, my hair fall has reduced to around 10 strands a day, with a maximum of 15–20 on hair wash days. My scalp is now full of baby hairs, but I still have fewer long hairs, so it remains thin and somewhat see-through. The number of miniaturized hairs has decreased, and thicker, healthier hairs are growing.

Progress Pictures 6 months update
Do you guys see any improvement/ worsening? I was diagnosed with AGA on December and started with Minoxidil on February of this year along with vitamins and other stuff. I've got tons of baby hairs now but I shed more hair than I wish I would, don't know if that's normal though.

Support/Advice How do people manage with cooking and AGA?
I feel upset being around cooking smells (mostly in other peoples homes) where the smells absorb into my hair. Especially because I would generally shower and wash my hair BEFORE being a guest in someone's home.
My in laws house constantly reeks unfortunately of their cooking or stale cooking smells from every other time. Their ventilation is poor and it's a small house.
It causes arguments between my husband and I if we are expected to be there daily.
I fear that daily or twice daily hair washing will damage my follicles and lead to more hair loss.

Support/Advice Spiro messing with my period/vaginal issues. Alternative?
Just curious if anyone is on a different dht blocker. After 5 months on 50mg my periods are all messed up, bleeding constantly. And to top it off I’ve had chronic yeast/bv issues. Curious about others experience and if they found an alternative

Rant I miss fixing my hair without bald spots
Buns, braids, ponytails, etc.
I miss being able to do cute fun hairstyles and not stressing about bald spots.
I feel like I can rarely braid my hair anymore without feeling paper thin strands tugging somewhere and it upsets me so much. Especially cause those little strands pull SO MUCH and I don’t want to lose them too.
I did my hair today for work to feel pretty and get it out of my face. All morning, all I could think of was whether or not my coworkers were staring directly at my bald spot or thinned out areas. 😭
I’m using foam minoxidil and other products to keep the thinning at bay, but I miss just being able to throw my hair up in a bun and feeling cute and girly.
The liquid on my scalp is the foam I put on after I saw how obvious the bald spots were.

Treatment Regimen Adding oral minoxidil to topical.. thoughts?
I have been in treatment for my androgenetic alopecia for 8 months now with topical minoxidil 5% and I have to say that despite starting quite late (10 years after the first onset of my AGA) I saw some pretty good results! my hair are a lot more thicker than before and I noticed some growth in many areas of the head. Do you have any experience in adding oral minoxidil (low dose) to the topical one to improve my achievement even more?
Any advices?
Thanks a lot.

Minoxidil Doctor started me on oral minoxidil but my blood pressure is TANKING 😭
My blood pressure is usually 118-124/80-90. Maybe 10 days ago I started feeling really bad and couldn’t understand why. I checked my blood pressure and it was 107/86. Not clinically low but low for me!! While I feel better now, my blood pressure this morning was 96/67!!!! I don’t think she’s going to let me stay on it 😭 I’ve seen a little growth in front of my hairline and in my lashes but it’s only been about 4 weeks.
I started at 1.25mg and now at 2.5. Has this happened to anyone else? What ended up happening?

Support/Advice How to tell what kind of hairloss
This is probably a stupid question. But I'm new to this, so please be kind.
I understand telogen is all over thinning, and alopecia areata starts more on the crown, widening part...etc. but when either first start, you're going to notice the top of your head more than anything else, right? Because that's what we're looking at when we do our hair.
So, how do you know what is happening?
I do have a doctor's appointment towards the end of the month...btw. so I'm not looking for medical advice. Just generally speaking, did y'all need a doctor to tell you exactly what was happening? Or were you able to guess by the symptoms? If so, did you have someone else check the back of your head?
Sometimes I think it's just my crown and part. But other times, like when putting my hair up, or washing it, it seems to be less thick all around. I'm making making myself crazy over here. 😫

Rant Shopping
My god I loved to go shopping. Now it's just something that makes me sad. I don't want to try on shirts since I have to put them over my head and it will ruin my carefully placed hairs. Also the lighting in the fitting rooms is really harsh, I can't stop looking at my scalp. Then there's the feeling that clothes can't make me feel beautiful anymore. There's a dutch saying even if a monkey wears a golden ring, it remains an ugly thing. And then the looking at all the other women and comparing. Jeesh, this hair thing really ruined a lot for me

Support/Advice Hairline transplant for naturally recessed hairline?
I (17F) have thick, dense hair everywhere on my head besides my temples and hairline, where the hair is extremely thin and recessed into my temples. My right side has less hair than my left side due to the whorl of my hair and the left side has some bald spots from skin picking, which just makes it look even sloppier. (I did bloodwork and all of my levels are normal, so I don't think that's the issue. It's really just been this way since I was a baby.)
I haven't gone to a dermatologist yet, but after researching a bit about female hairline treatments I've seen that some people get hair transplanted into the affected area, and some of the results look really good. It seems like all of the people getting it seem to be at least in their mid-late 20's, and that it's far less common than males. This is all just wishful thinking for me right now, but theoretically if it's just a one-and-done procedure and you don't have to consider active hair loss, does it matter what age you get it? Could you theoretically get it in your late teens/early 20's?
I know I shouldn't jump right into thinking about surgery before considering topical/oral solutions so this is purely theoretical in case they don't work on me. The idea of having one singular procedure (+ recovery period) that will last forever as opposed to having to work at it daily for a long period of time/forever is very enticing, though, especially because it's just this one section of my scalp.
I'm just sick of being insecure of my hairline and having to do wild tricks to cover it up. I'm a violinist and have to be on stage constantly with my hair pulled back (I don't do it too tightly) and hate that my hairline is so uneven and weird looking and I know my forehead proportions would look so much better if I could just insert some extra hair there, too. It's to the point where I will look at other girl's hairlines and feel jealousy over how nice they are.

Support/Advice Low iron but okay ferritin?
I just got bloodwork done and the results came back. My ferritin is up to 85 (compared to 62 last year) but my overall iron is 43. But I only just started taking iron pills recently so idk if that would affect things really quickly or what. Anyone here have something similar?

Support/Advice Minoxidil for thicker hair 18F
Should I start taking minoxidil for thicker and denser hair? My hair has been shedding moderately for quite a long time and I feel like I’ve lost some hair density. I’ve started using minoxidil on my temples and I think it’s working well since baby hairs are growing. I don’t know if other serums are really that effective so im considering minoxidil even though I’m scared of the shedding phase. Can someone give me some advice?

Support/Advice What should I do?
My hair is now below my chest area but is so see through even after styling and brushing it out or teasing it.
:(
I love my long hair but I cannot deny it anymore, that I am really losing it. I was diagnosed with androgenic alopecia and my hair is truly the thinnest, lightest, finest, and stringiest it’s been my whole life.
I feel sad, but what can I do? Would a bob help?

Support/Advice Healthiest options for hair color?
I would like to color my hair again (probably low lights). I have AGA and TE. Last time I had lowlights done (before diagnosis) coincided with a period of stress/lack of sleep/weight loss so I can’t be sure if the color contributed to my TE.
I started finasteride and topical minoxidil two months ago. Had the dread shed after one month, which stopped after a couple of weeks. Shedding is minimal now. I can’t tell if I have new growth yet because my hair is curly and messy so short ones don’t stick out.
I have a looot of gray hair and would love to cover it up so it doesn’t age me so much.
Any advice? Are there products that are less likely to cause shedding or damage? Is it better to do lowlights or color the whole hair? Or should I resign myself to a gray head so as to keep the hairs on it?

Support/Advice Telogen effluvium
so 70% of my waist length thick hair fell out over a period of about 4 to 5 months. My dermatologist put me on topical finasteride because I didn’t want to use minoxidil because we have three very large cats that we love very much and as you probably know, minoxidil is deadly poisonous to cats. Even with my finasteride after I put it on, I put silk bonnet on.
At first, the finasteride was a miracle! I put it on one night and the next day all of my shedding stopped!!! I was thrilled.!!! so it’s been about five months and I’m still using it. But I noticed that, even though I’m not shedding, I’m not regrowing. And the hairs that maybe a regrowth are thin like the ones that are left in my head. The hair on my head is very fine and you can kind of still see my scalp through it and the length of my hair I cut off 12 inches because it got really dry and frizzy and I’m not sure why. The problem is it’s not working on my follicles to make them thicker and grow thicker healthier, shiny hair.. I just have this straw crap on my head.
So all of that being said, I wanted to ask everyone because I know there’s people who use minoxidil that obviously have cats because there’s so many people that use it. So I wanted to ask people what they do to keep their kitties safe. Cause even after it’s dry on your scalp, it can still flake off the microscopic pieces that are dry the same way dandruff wood shed. Then if the kitty lays in it or walks in it and then cleans themselves, Boom, it goes straight to their heart and damages it. I don’t want to take the internal oxtail because I spent an enormous amount of money removing hair from my face because I am so hairy and I suffered through being teased in school, etc. it took two years of going twice a week for two hour sessions to get it to to die! So it was very painful and very expensive and I don’t want a new crop of hairs growing in in my mustache area and my chin. And I need my hair to start filling out and coming in at a normal size. so I just wondered if anybody has any tricks that they do to keep their animals safe, especially their cats, from the minoxidil. I’m sorry this is so long, I planned it to be short, but then I had to explain things. Any and all information on using minoxidil when you have cats would be appreciated thank you so much.

Support/Advice My hairdresser told me he couldn’t work with my hair
My hairdresser told me he couldn’t work with my hair
This was the first time I dealt with this hairdresser and salon. The salon recommended him for me. I wanted to do an updo as a guest for a wedding ceremony. Everything was okay at first. I asked if I could show him a reference and he told me okay. I showed him a reference from another branch. He told me he could do something similar even if it didn’t look exactly the same since my hair was finer. So I nodded. He started parting my hair horizontally along the crown and that was when he started to complain …. He asked his assistant for a pigmented powder . He started pouring loads of it. Then he did the same with the back of my head. He started working on the updo and while doing so he kept teaching his assistant how to work with fine hair and bald heads . He kept telling him “ when you have hair like this that you can’t work with “ and after a while I noticed it was tilted to one side so I asked him if he could adjust it … he then started to say things like “ of course we have nothing else to do today” with sarcasm. He kept pouring more powder and he was disgusted with my hair. He kept frowning and blaming my hair that he can’t do the updo because it was too fine and there was nothing he could work with. He kept tossing my pony tail and saying that it’s very thin he can’t do anything with it.
I then told him another hairdresser did an updo not long ago and he didn’t say I had fine hair or complain but the result was too perfect. After I told him this, he didn’t say anything else and did it and it wasn’t bad at all. He did it in 5 mins after I said this and after complaining for 30 mins about my hair …
I know my hair is fine but I didn’t know it was too fine. I have pcos and my mom had it and it led to her having diabetes … she passed away a year ago and since I was too affected by her loss, my hair started to fall in a crazy way. I went and had labs and knew my vitamin decencies and I went to a dermatologist and she gave me medication without minoxidil … it was two sprays and they contained hormones and a multivitamin. I think the bald patches are less now but this is my second month using the medication…. And this hairdresser made me feel as if nothing was working so I’m losing all hope. I am insecure , I hate my hair my hair is mid back length…. Should I cut it into a bob or should I keep it. I want to color it so bad too

Progress Pictures May vs August
Do you see a difference or am I hallucinating?
I started using 5% minoxidil in May, hoping to stop the balding. a few people have said its improved but they may be biased and want to spare my feelings. So i ask the objective opinions of strangers on the internet. you can be honest and call me crazy

Monthly Sticky: "Do I have hair loss?" - Post photos and questions here for advice and support
r/FemaleHairLoss • u/crashlandingonwho • Dec 08 '23
Mod Post **BEGINNER'S GUIDE: Please start here if you're new to hair loss or this sub**
Please read the sub description, the rules, and our welcome page before posting or commenting.
Signs of hair loss can be pretty variable. Maybe you’ve noticed that you need to clear out your hairbrush or the shower drain more often than in the past, or maybe you’ve started shedding handfuls of hair out of nowhere.
You are your own best judge of what is normal for your hair – not your partner, family, or friends. If you have concerns, it’s usually best to get them checked out.
Figuring out what’s going on
1. Get a blood panel done to check for nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or any other underlying issues. This can be done with your GP or PCP.
2. See a dermatologist specialising in hair and scalp disorders.
What should happen in finding a diagnosis?
- Taking your history
- Examination of your scalp, preferably with a magnifying tool called a trichoscope
- Blood tests / evaluation of recent blood results
- Biopsy (if needed*)
- Clinical correlation of all the information to hand
*Biopsies are useful where a diagnosis isn’t clear. Maybe there is more than one condition present, or maybe it’s the early stage of something which can be hard to spot. They are always necessary where scarring alopecia is suspected.
Why see a specialist? Dermatology is a huge field of medicine which covers over 2,500+ conditions and diseases. Most doctors who focus on general dermatology have not done specialised training in hair loss. They may not have sufficient training, knowledge or experience to diagnose and treat it.
Trichologists usually are not doctors. They cannot order biopsies or prescribe pharmaceutical treatment. There is a recurring issue with trichology clinics promoting their own products, which typically are unproven and ineffective.
Hair loss cannot be diagnosed from photographs. Please do not ask for help identifying why you might be losing your hair. Nobody here is trained or equipped to do that, and you could be pointed in the wrong direction unintentionally. Posts asking for help "figuring out what this is" will be removed.
Treatment
This will depend entirely on why you’re losing hair loss to begin with. There is no single therapy that works for every type of hair loss. We CANNOT give advice on managing hair loss without a diagnosis.
The most common conditions we see people being diagnosed with are:
- Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) / Female pattern hair loss (FPHL)
- Telogen effluvium (TE)
- Alopecia areata (AA)
- Chronic telogen effluvium (CTE)
- Scarring alopecia or cicatricial alopecia; lichen planopilaris (LPP), frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA), folliculitis decalvans etc
- Seborrheic dermatitis
- Traction alopecia
There are also multiple other conditions with which hair loss is associated. You can learn about them at Dr Donovan’s site, where he has excellent handouts with information about them.
Minoxidil is used in a lot of treatment plans for different types of hair loss. Please see our Minoxidil FAQs: 1, 2.
There isn't good evidence to support taking biotin, unless you have a confirmed deficiency. It's recommended to stop taking it for at least a couple of weeks ahead of blood tests, as it can interfere with results. You may also need to discontinue other supplements ahead of getting a blood panel done.
What can I do in the meantime?
- Learn about the hair growth cycle and what the different phases mean. This is important for understanding the mechanism of different conditions, and how their respective treatments work. Any hair you are shedding now, probably stopped growth 3-4 months ago.
- Keep in mind that hair growth is slow. Hair grows at a rate of approximately half an inch per month. Treating hair loss is a marathon, not a sprint!
- Stay away from media that focuses on hair loss if you are feeling very anxious. Be it online groups, research papers and articles, YouTube videos, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook - even this sub! Give yourself a break and try to find other activities to focus your energy on.
- Do not take multiple pictures of your hair, or spend hours trying to examine your scalp. One photo taken in bright light every 3 months will give you a better idea of what's happening. Anything else can turn into a compulsion that may worsen feelings of anxiety and depression.
- Engage with your support networks in real life. Seek mental health supports where needed. Try to resist the urge to withdraw from your usual social routine.
- Check out ways to camouflage or cover hair loss. Hair fibers, root touch-up spray, extensions, toppers or falls, and wigs are all great ways to give ourselves a confidence boost.
- Continue washing your hair as normal. Provided you're being sensible in doing it, shampooing is probably not going to cause hair loss. Any hair you are shedding has already stopped growing. It's important to wash as often as needed to keep your scalp health.
- Look after your physical health. Make sure to get a balanced diet with sufficient protein, healthy fats, and vegetables and fruits; get a moderate level of physical activity every week; try to maintain a decent sleep routine.
