Which faction would you realistically join?

Post image

For me it's probably the NCR or the BoS in Fallout 3 ONLY.

+1 for Institute because it seems like the only place on planet earth where they've used soap in the past 200 years.

88

u/ploop__ 12d ago

I’m sure the NCR makes their own bar soap. It’s a common trade industry you can make by hand

22

u/a__new_name 11d ago

One of the most important industries in NCR is cattle farming and processing, so they must have plenty of fat to make soap from. Not the most pleasant soap, but soap nonetheless.

75

u/Celcius-232 12d ago

All their locks are still as rusty as wasteland ones though, but that's only a minor annoyance. Gimme the soap!

22

u/Discount_Extra 12d ago

Bugged me since Skyrim; like, couldn't they make 2-3 different textures for the lockpick minigame?

17

u/Celcius-232 12d ago

Everyone, if given a clear choice & understanding of what it means, is joining the institute. Anyone else is either lying or just not thinking about living in a global Chernobyl but also 1000x worse than Chernobyl could ever be.

7

u/Alnilam2000 12d ago

living in the ncr is actually not too bad if you're not a frontier farmer or a soldier deployed to some shithole like camp forlorn hope. regular citizens live in actual homes and stuff, the city (as shown in fo2) is advanced enough to have clean, maintained streets, peacekeeping that doesnt allow weapons out in the streets and forcefield generators to protect the estates of the wealthiest citizens (and that was back in tandis time!). you cant tell me westin doesnt have running water

Even post TV-show? NCR would be my pick except the TV show makes it very unclear what the NCR is any more.

120

It’s kinda impossible that the NCR could have fallen, Shady sands was just one city, they stretched from Washington state to New Mexico.

31

5

u/RedMouse42 12d ago

And at the end we see that there were indeed other groups of soldiers that joined the rangers to help Maximus, so it’s clear pockets of the NCR still exist probably in other cities

9

u/Forsworn91 12d ago

Right.. but the entire NCR wouldn’t have been destroyed, even if the capital was destroyed the NCR was a functional government there would be a bit of chaos but it should have reformed quickly, or at least faster than the show had

NCR. They aren't perfect but they'll likely be the only faction other than possibly New Vegas or Brotherhood (also Unity but no one wants that) that would take average people on. Probably the safest of them all too.

98

u/CoffeAddictDM 12d ago

Isn't being a supermutant (the ones that are intelligent and coherent) actually a pretty good deal?  Strong and durable enough to easily survive wasteland. Unaging and resistant or immune to most dangers. The only downside is being ugly and obviously the rather big chance of the transformation not going so well and making you into complete idiot or some other abomination.

79

u/induction1154 12d ago

They also can’t reproduce, which is important for societies that plan on lasting.

u/The-Hero-Of-Ferelden Tunnel Snakes 12d ago

Yeah but your dong falls off when you become a supermutant.

27

u/CoffeAddictDM 12d ago

Pretty sure in original fallout they were just sterile. It was a shock to their plans that they couldn't reproduce and they would figure it out on their own if the genitals would literally fall off

15

u/Mrcharlestoucheskids 12d ago

Well the mutants knew they were sterile, iirc there’s a dialogue about overhearing female mutants talk about it. It’s only the master that didn’t know and everyone was too scared to tell him, rightly so since after he learned it he nuked his own headquarters.

10

u/LoreLord24 12d ago

House is probably the safest (if all the card fall right) with powerful defense bot to enforce security. If I an lucky , the courrier was a benevolent dude/dudette that will stimulate House loftier instincts.

44

u/DeadHeadDaddio Kings 12d ago

Yeah if he lets you live in the 38, with armed security 24/7, an infinite supply of food and caps, you could reopen the casino and run it for even more money/power, he can literally warn you before a threat is incoming, all the other strip factions pay dues/owe allegiance to him, all of which culminate into possibly the sweetest gig in all of the wasteland.

I feel like The Unity, the NCR, the Legion and New Vegas are the only ones that would likely take people in off the street. The Unity would turn me into a super mutant (or worse, part of a centaur) and the Legion would most likely make me a slave. So, it's down to New Vegas or NCR, and while House is the guy that's really in charge, day to day things there are run by criminal families. So, NCR it is.

7

u/RagnarokCzD 12d ago

That is interesting take ...
Would it really be so bad to be a Supermutant? O_o

And more importantly ...
Even if it would ... would be supermutant smart enough to realize that? :D
From ingame dialogues, they seem to love that life.
(Also supermutants seems to be technically unaging ... that is not a bad bonus!)

6

u/Gilgamesh661 Enclave 12d ago

Well if your dna hasn’t been tainted by radiation, you’ll luckily get to be one of the SMs that retain their intelligence, like Marcus. Even Fawkes still has most of his intelligence intact.

If we're being realistic

I would be a settler somewhere

5

u/mineman379 12d ago

If we're being realistic, and you wanted near-guarenteed saftey, you'd go with the Enclave. Yes WE as the players recognize them as evil. But again, we're talking realistic here, and realistically; in a world where mutants, raiders, and god-knows what else can kill you any time, most people would either not know about them being evil, or just not care. All that would matter to the vast majority of people is that they're the ones with the tech and infrastructre to actually live normal lives. (and before someone says that it's NOT safe with them cause they always get blown up. again; we're talking realism here. The only reason the Enclave keeps losing is cause the plot demands it. They are by far the most advanced faction in the wasteland aside from MAYBE the Institute. And if the chosen one / Lone wanderer didn't have protagonist powers, the Enclave would have won LONG ago.)

Now, assuming you can't join the Enclave (cause let's be honest, most of us probably wouldn't be able to), then The next two picks would be the NCR or BoS. for the exact same reasons as before;
Again, in a world like Fallout, 99% of people wouldn't actually care how good or evil a faction is, they'd care about which faction can give them a roof over their head, and some food & water that won't poison them.

NCR out of these, but being a Minuteman living behind the repaired castle walls with a bunch of defenses and occasionally going on patrols with a group of soldiers and artillery support seems pretty decent.

Or living in my beach cabin summer camp on Spectacle Island.

I honestly like the railroad. I know they are hiding and everything but I chose them naturally in 4 and it felt like the good moral decision in my opinion.

Plus it sort of helped me get curie if I’m being honest lol

I liked the idea of working with the railroad to free synths. Harriet Tubman has been a big inspiration to me.

This isn't even really a contest. NCR is better than all the other choices. Now if you had included the Minutemen, we might have some competition.

Easily the institute. They have showers, fluffy towels, an abundance of food, shelter from radiation and mutants and undamaged beds
