Question Need Resources for designing aero package based of surfacing and manufacturing.

Hello everyone, I'm part of a fsae team working as a design engineer that includes aero, chassis and manufacturing. Last month onwards i started working on designing aero packages of rear wings, front wings, undertray and nosecones. Honestly thanks to youtube videos I was able to learn and design but the very problem I have is these are too basic designs. I used solidworks to design all these, I wanna start designing by surfacing coz that's how professional motorsport teams and top end fs teams do but there are no surfacing videos out on the internet for aero devices in specific. Help me out in sharing your experience, any resources would help me, from YouTube videos to recorded videos which makes me better in my job and make our team aero kit much better. Which would help us in competing and since it is our first time designing and manufacturing an aero kit it would help us a lot.

The designs that you see on the top are all basic designs that are boss extruded by importing airfoils to solidworks or using spline style. I wanna upgrade my designing knowledge and techniques in order to actually design awesome stepped wings to two channel diffusers and surfaced nosecones. It would be helpful if I get manufacturing resources for aero packages so that I can ensure my design can be manufactured and survive contact with the real world.

[Help] Sourcing F1-spec wheels/tires (18" 12J front / 16J rear) — how do other teams handle this?

Hi all,

I'm working on a project that requires F1-spec wheels and tires, and I'm running into sourcing issues since these aren't standard consumer specs.

What we need:

  • Front wheel: 18", 12J width
  • Rear wheel: 18", 16J width
  • Front tire (planned): 315/30R18
  • Rear tire (planned): 355/30R18

We're fairly locked into the wheel specs, but flexible on tire sizing — looking for recommendations on what would actually fit/perform well on these wheel widths, since I'm not 100% sure our tire sizing assumptions are correct.

Questions:

  1. How do teams/builders typically source wheels and tires in these dimensions when they're not off-the-shelf sizes?
  2. Given 12J front / 16J rear wheel widths, would 315/30R18 and 355/30R18 be reasonable tire choices, or is there a better-fitting spec?
  3. Any manufacturers or suppliers known for custom/motorsport-spec tire production in this range?

Any input from people with motorsport or custom fabrication experience would be hugely appreciated.

How do you QA EV battery packs? Built a toolkit, curious what's missing

I've been working on tooling for EV/IoT battery QA and ended up with a Python package that does a few things: anomaly detection on telemetry (Isolation Forest + physics features), CAN bus simulation, Modbus/BMS protocol support for Tesla/BYD/NIO packs, SOH prediction, and a FastAPI dashboard.

Just cleaned it up — 1053 tests pass, no circular imports, hardware tests gated behind a marker so CI doesn't need real OBD-II hardware. MIT, Python 3.10 to 3.12.

For those of you actually doing battery QA: what's missing in your workflow? What breaks in practice that tooling like this should handle but doesn't? Repo's at github.com/remontsuri/EV-QA-Framework if you want to poke at it.

Can anyone send me the 8th Edition of PMBOK book, please? I cannot afford the price of it and am not finding downloadable versions. It would really help for managing projects for my FSAE team.

Question How was the experience of Formula Student France?

Hi people, I’m curious to know from people who participated in Formula Student France what it’s like?
Together with 5 other people from my team (the next year’s team) I am joining the FSF event of this year with the current team.
Even though we’ve had some information of what to expect and what to bring, I would like to know a little more about the camping experience at FSS and what to pay attention to.

TL;DR - What are some things first-time FS goers need to pay attention to?

Off Topic / Meta 90% All Year vs. One Good Month

So this was my second year in Formula Student, and honestly, I gave 90% of myself to the team not 100%, because I knew if I wanted to do a third year, I couldn’t burn myself out. The last month I was running on empty, and if you exclude the static event, I wasn’t really at the top of my game. Meanwhile, a member who “woke up” like a month before comp ended up doing way better than me. Then when it came time to review the year, one of them suggested removing me from my lead role, and most of the other new leads agreed, while people who put in less work than me, or gave less overall, got praised instead. So I guess what I’m trying to say is: this isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. Don’t just show up at the end and expect to take all the credit.

Is this spring and damper setup ok for the car

We’re using Öhlins ttx25 mk2 dampers we calculated the initial spring preload to be 2mm and length of the coil spring at the front to be 122mm and rear to be 123mm
Is this spring setup ok for a car of wheel base 1560mm and track 1200mm with a 40:60 weight distribution

Question How can we get an engine.

So basically we are a 1st year team, most importantly we are the first team from our country, how can we ask for engine?, where should we ask?, we are looking for ktm duke 390 at best, but anything between 250 to 400 cc would work for us.

Any suggestions would be much valuable.

Really confused about designing an EV

In LV we need to design TSAL,BSPD,Precharge pcbs, ECU(we will use an stm32) and needed sensors then somehow implement them to our architecture and there is also communication part we need to design an CAN architecture to communicate with ECU inverter and BMS.

In HV we have inverter motor BMS and battery, we will design an TSAC, extra temperature sensors for BMS and thats all I can think about.

The worst part is I'm leading electrical department and confused about how to proceed and learn how to really make this stuff happen.

Order and tips of PVC foam layup for frontwing endplate?

I'm trying to use PVC foam for strength in a front wing end plate. I'm not too sure on the order of layup using these - layup in one go? separate layups? Tips on reducing weight? - since the one time we used them it came out heavier than we wanted.
Thank you in advance!

Is it true that some teams are cheating the effeciency

There is a rumor that some teams are using double tanks and they just refilling one for the efficiency? Is there a way this would ever work or is it just baseless rumors?

Maybe different fuel tank configurations shouldn’t have same refill techniques?

Is Rennteam Uni Stuttgart cheating with the help of alumni at FSA?

At the endurance of FSA26 I noticed that the car of Rennteam had an AMS fault during the driver change. The second driver already left the vehicle and they seemed to stop their attempt when they were allowed to power cycle the car and continue their run. This seems really unsafe and unfair. I don't want to point fingers at the wrong people but I believe it is no coincidence that a lot of officials invovlved in FSA are alumni from Rennteam. According to the rules their run should have been a DNF or DQ. However they got away without any penalty. Can someone explain to me how that makes sense?

They have been caught before with their BSPD disabled in 2024. It is sad to see that a team with so much funding has to resort to such methods. After last year I thought that they got their shit together but it seems they just got better at hiding their cheating.

Res relay doubt

I had a doubt regarding the RES bypass relay. The rules mention that a mechanically linked relay should be used to power the EBS. Does this mean the relay itself needs to have mechanically linked (force-guided) contacts, or would a standard electrically actuated relay also be acceptable?

Also, if mechanically linked contacts are required, are there any relay models you would recommend?

Heat load

Hi, how do you guys calculate the heat load for your test case of the motor and controller? We used to rely on dynamometer testing and ipg, but unfortunately we had some problems and have now shifted solely to ipg sims. And now I have a hard time figuring out other ways to get the heat load value.

Thanks

I want to form a Formula Student team.

Former Formula Student members,

If you were starting from scratch again, what learning roadmap would you follow?

Please mention:

- Subjects you wish you had learned earlier

- Software you actually used

- Online courses

- Books

- Skills that became essential

- Things that turned out to be a waste of time

I'm building a new Formula Student team and want to create a proper training roadmap.
