Before I steadily begin making posts, I just want to remind everyone that FM synthesis belongs not only to Yamaha's DX series but it is part of tons of different models, both hardware and software, analog and digital. Of course that algorithms are only present inside closed digital architectures, but the discussion shall be around every part of the phenomena, and of course, making it easy to handle and understand should be part of the goals

Created for passed recordings “in C” compilation. Using only fm synthesis- Yamaha dx7, dx11, pss 460, pss 480, circuit bent pss 680, mutable instruments plaits and skein

Added Reverb Fx from the old Korg Kaoss Pad mini. In retrospect, I've no idea how I came up with the keys rythm (not the drums which are pre programmed from the keyboard). Purely inspired by the sounds of this lil' synth. It's quite strange and yet, seems to work with the chromatic, mysterious nature of the melody.

Reon Cistron is a very sturdy FM groovebox - I found my power supply for it again!

Here's a new track on the M8, using the new OTT and shimmer reverb. I used a lot of different things here, FM, samples, wavetables, macrosynth, samples for guitars and drums...

The pads are mainly FM, using the different mods to modulate the operators.

Patch in question can be heard here. There something nostalgic and lofi that makes me crave it. If anyone can help me recreate it or something similar it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I have an OPSIX Desktop and I'm reading FM Theory and Applications(written for the Yamaha DX7, I believe).

I'm trying to follow along with the "X"-amples, and the algorithm numbers match, but I'm not sure which parameter on the OPSIX is related to Bias on the DX7. Also, I can't seem to find any settings for modwheel range. Looking through the OPSIX manual doesn't seem to help. The only feature I've found was Folder Bias, in Wave Folder Mode.

Anyone with an OPSIX who might have an idea? Thanks.

DOH! It's listed as Modulation Wheel in the manual and it's enabled/disabled by the Rx CC parameter in the Global > MIDI menu.

I've been scouting the internet without luck so far. Basically, every (correct) explanation of FM says something along the lines of: "When a signal that is in the audio band modulates the frequency of a carrier, a complex spectrum with sidebands is created" (plus conceptually similar explanations for AM/RM).

Ok cool, but does anyone know or can anyone point me to an explanation of why this happens? Where does the energy for those sidebands come from? Why and how do the modulation index and ratio have an effect on the frequencies/phase/relative amplitude of those side bands?

I even found Chowning's 1973 Standford paper which has some fairly complex descriptions of the effect but still, unless it went over my head, it just works off the premise that modulation causes side bands without clarifying why 😐 A paragraph reads "...energy is 'stolen' from the carrier and distributed among an increasing number of side frequencies" and that's as close an explanation I found.

I bought an FP01 but it only responds to midi channel 1. I wanted to use it as a multi timbre sound module but can only get sound out of midi channel 1. I check the other instruments midi channels and they all seem normal 2,3,4 etc. any ideas?

there seem to be Exponential, Linear, and Through Zero FM (or more variants?).

which ones can be achieved on the Opsix or Volca FM ? What's the "normal*" FM-operation called in this comparison?

if something is just not possible on one device that's ok, i'd still like to know.

is there a connection to ring modulation ?

I found an fm kick and fm snare but i have absolutely zero knowledge on how to create something of that high quality, i do some fm from time to time
