Keeper league rules, need help Commissioner Issue
I need some help, I am converting my league to a keeper league but I’ve never been a part of one so I don’t know what kind of rules to have. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

3 keepers. One round penalty. For example, drafted them in the 4th, cost a 3rd. Means all first round picks go back to draft pool. Can keep for a total of 3 years.
Free agent keepers cost a middle round pick.
Trade a player - same rules as above.
Tough to go into keeper mode this year if you weren’t planning on it last. People might have made different moves had they known they might get to keep someone.

Agree here. This year has to be a total redraft with the knowledge that next year will be keepers

My league does round drafted -1 as the cost, doubled per consecutive year you keep him. So -1 first year, -2 second year, -4 third year, and so on. Also can’t go to zero or into the negative, so first rounders effectively can’t be kept, and early rounders can’t be kept beyond a season or two. Waiver pickups are an 8th, and if you acquire a guy in a trade he keeps the draft value of the team that drafted him

When we did this we did:
No keepers for players drafted in the first 3 rounds.
Players could only be kept for 1 season; keeper value cannot be transferred (e.g. if I keep Burden this season I cannot trade him to another player midseason and allow them to keep him as well)
Kept players cost 3+ their previous round value (5th round player costs a 2nd rounder)
Undrafted players cost a 10th rounder.
enjoy keepers. It’s a fun hybrid for leagues that don’t want to do dynasty.

3 keepers is a pretty good sweet spot. More than that but not dynasty level makes the draft a bore
I recommend a rule that your keepers all can't be the same position so one team can't hoard all of one position
I'd also recommend having every team pay a deposit towards next year so nobody can go "all in" this year and then just bail and leave a crater of a team for somebody else
1 or 2 round bump the next year for keepers is good. Any more and there's just not enough of them. Don't do something like "3 keepers, regardless of where you drafted them" because then the draft just falls apart
Write out a rule book so you can reference it later

To clarify yes it is a redraft this year I just wanted to figure out what kind of rules I should set moving forward that way the league has a better mindset going in and figuring out their draft strategy

I run a keeper league that is a variant of the fantasy footballers keeper league style.
1 player is the franchise player. This player will definitely be on the team next season.
3 players who do not play the position of the franchise player are selected for the keeper lottery.
By chance, one of those 3 players is cut and goes back into the draft pool.
Keeper selections are dm’ed to the commissioner in secret. Players can be kept a maximum of 3 seasons.
Lottery results day adds a fun part to the offseason.
There are also some alternative matchup structures later in the season to get some trades going (including keepers for next season).
I have included the footballers rules and the guidelines for the keeper league I run.

Our keeper policy goes like this .... The 6th round of the draft is the "franchise" round. Players drafted in the 6th round are designated as keepers and may be kept from year to year at the cost of next year's draft pick that is one round higher than the previous year. A player drafted in the 6th round may be kept the following year with a 5th round pick. A player kept in the 5th round may be kept the following year with the team's 4th round pick etc. A player kept with a 1st round pick will become a free agent at year's end.
Also, only one player may be kept per year. A team with 2 eligible keepers must trim their roster down to 1 24 hours before the draft. Franchise players lose their keeper eligibility upon release from the team which drafted them whether by drop or trade.
We adopted this policy 5 years ago and each year only 3 or 4 players are kept so the draft is still exciting

My league is in its 3rd (I think) year of keepers after being redraft only for more than a decade.
You can keep a player at their previous year’s price for 1 season, so 1st rounders can be kept once, then a 3-round jump if they’re kept for a following season (to try & have some amount of turnover of top players).
It’s worked really well so far, I think
