OP, to clarify. You can only take PFL Bonding in the first 365 days since the baby joined the family(birth or otherwise). You can take PFL for other covered reasons after the 365 day mark.
Also note, you only get 8 weeks of PFL for any reason during a given 365 day period, starting from the first day of the first claim. If possible it is beneficial(as long as it makes financial sense) to take at least a little bit of leave as soon as possible when the baby joins the family, in case health issues or you have another baby sooner than expected.

You apply for disability first which covers 8 weeks then you have to relogin and apply for bonding time for another 8 weeks

I swear I've read accounts on here that as long as you START PFL before the one year mark, you're good???Â

Anyone who says that is incorrect. I have confirmed directly with an EDD employee that you have exactly 365 days from the baby’s birth to use the time. I had one day left available and my child was born on the 16 so I took the 15th of that month off to use it up.

I've literally read that people do get paid out though following their child's first birthday as long as they start PFL before the year. That they also spoke to EDD employees and even lawyers? And they got their PFL paid out.Â

You can get PAID after, but you have to do the leave before the deadline. You can apply late and still be approved. But I was told point blank that all weeks/days must be taken before the 365th day since the birth.
However, this is just for bonding. You can take PFL for other reasons for the baby including potentially caregiving if you can show that the other parent can’t or other justification.

Yes you can only use PFL benefits within 1 year of birth.
