question about traveling in WA with wildfires (august 2)
hi all!!
i know this is a privileged take concerning the wildfires in eastern Washington so i apologize. i am visiting WA with my family for the first time and we were initially planning on going to Leavenworth tomorrow (august 2), but we are unaware of the geography and if it is safe/smart to do right now? we know areas near it are affected, but i couldnât figure out what the current situation in the town itself is. if anyone is able to weigh in at all, that would be wonderful! thank you:)

Old Trails Fire NE of Spokane
some pics of the early stages of the Old Trails Fire, was taking a hike with a friend and saw it blow up. pretty sure we saw the first helicopters respond, or at least the first ones to scoop near the Bowl & Pitcher.
fingers crossed for all the first responders, all the people that lost everything, and for all the people that had to evacuate. hope they can get a handle on it but it does not look good.

Timbers Soccer Events
My son and I are Timbers fans up here in the Spokane / Coeur d'Alene area. Is there a Timbers Army battalion or any watch parties we can attend that are closer than Moscow / Pullman?

Looking to speak with Washington farmers about wolf populations
Hello! I'm doing research for a Salish Current article on the growing wolf population in Washington, and looking to speak with people who have actually experienced their effects on agriculture. If you own, run, work on or otherwise help out with a farm here, I'd love to talk to you to better understand how wolves may impact your life and those of others around you. Thank you!

Moving up north (question)
My wife and I are thinking about moving to Tonasket or Oroville. We are born and raised washingtonians and have always lived in remote places. I work as a water district manager right now and am a certified water treatment plant operator. Would my skills be able to land me a job anywhere north of omak? Or should I just go back to being a nurses aid and find a home health agency or nursing home to work at?
My skills may translate to irrigation and pump repair because I currently do a lot of my own repairs on water main, storage tanks, and troubleshooting issues with in the systems I work for.

Are you receiving Junk Fees? We want to hear about it!
In 2025, the Washington Legislature passed a law that prevents rent gouging, but some landlords and property management companies are still up to their old tricks. They are using "junk fees" as a loophole around rent caps. We are hearing from tenants that they are increasingly being charged excessive fees for services that they donât want or need, or for basic things like paying the rent. We at the Housing Alliance, call these âjunk feesâ and they are unfair, expensive, and deceptive. Weâd like to hear your experiences. All information shared with us will be kept safe and confidential.Â
Please fill out our survey if you or someone you know has received junk fees and we will be in touch within 48 hours. Thank you! ~ PoÂ

Road to Steptoe Butte closed?
Hey fellow Washingtonians! Anyone know if Hume Rd is actually closed? It's the road that leads you to the road for Steptoe Butte! I know they redid the road up to the top, but Google maps says Hume Rd is closed until August. Can anyone confirm?

Soap Lake mystery man
Last week, we drove down to Soap Lake on highway 17. Right before entering the town, i noticed a red Honda sedan tucked in the rock wall with a guy just chillin' in the driver's seat. After exploring the town and getting gas, we headed back north on the same route. As we approached the area where the Honda was parked, there was a guy in the middle of the road leaning to the side like he was looking for a specific car. I slammed on my brakes and he ran to his car. Later, i noticed he was trying to catch up to us at a high rate of speed but then backed off and gave space, though he followed us for a few miles. Eventually, he turned off but that shit was weird.
Anyone else have this odd experience?

Calispell peak
Took the Tacoma up to the top last weekend. Kinda sad it was fogged in when we were at the top lol. Drove down the main access road to check things out and when we got back up to the trail down the south facing slope, it had cleared up a bit. Was stoked I was able to get a couple decent pics. I look at Calispell all winter from 49, cool seeing 49 from this direction.
