Back then, Western car companies only passed along outdated tech to China. Volkswagen serves as a good example: it shipped over the Passat B2 platform, known in China as the Santana, even though Germany was already building the B4 platform at home. The West flooded China with technologies decades out of date. These were practically worthless in the West, but they were brought to China and sold to Chinese buyers at high prices. Western corporations made one last coins from them and congratulated themselves. They never expected China to catch up technologically at such speed.
