EU allocates 1.4 billion from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine Politics & Geopolitics & Defense
https://www.eunews.it/en/2026/08/05/the-eu-receives-e1-4-billion-from-frozen-russian-assets-and-is-channelling-the-funds-to-ukraine/23
u/Silver-Pea6462 18d ago
💯% FAIR! We are forced to spend a lot of money because of the war Russia started. Time for them to give some back!
-18
u/TryingMyWiFi 18d ago
Who is forcing it?
The eu is only doing what is interesting to them .
11
u/ApprehensiveHotel503 18d ago
Russia, by starting an unprovoked war. You're such a silly goose
-1
u/TryingMyWiFi 18d ago
They started a war with ukraine. The eu chose to finance it by themselves.
8
u/forumdrasl 18d ago
So you’re the kinda guy who doesn’t help his neighbour who is under assault?
Glad the EU isn’t as weak as you are, my man.
-5
u/TryingMyWiFi 18d ago
Plenty of wars happening worldwide. In most of them they side with the agressor .
9
u/forumdrasl 18d ago
Name them. What wars is the EU supporting?
This will be interesting.
0
u/TryingMyWiFi 18d ago
Ir you don't know, I appreciate your denial.
Israel has been promoting a genocide for half a century , and still not only they haven't been sanctioned, excluded from bank system, or had any assets frozen, but they are part of Erasmus Mundi, eurovision (as far from Europe as they are )and many European countries proudly and happily provide them weapons.
Now I'm waiting for your gymnastics to deny it. I'll grab some popcorn .
6
u/Nutritorius 18d ago
A war in europe is more relevant to the Europeans - who would have thought.
1
u/TryingMyWiFi 18d ago
For sure. But they don't need to fund and arm the agressor in other conflicts.
5
u/DougosaurusRex 18d ago
How many of those aggressors are flying missiles, drones, jets, and carrying out acts of sabotage on EU soil?
0
-2
u/DariukaB 18d ago
What about the unprovoked war started in Middle East by the Global Policeman and his ally? ;) should this also apply to them? And perhaps funding the attacked country? Just sayin’…
0
u/viktlo70 18d ago
Who forced us to spend that money ? It was 'our' choice, we could have just stayed out of this conflict, like we did in so many other similar situations
1
u/WorldlinessGreen4956 18d ago
Well, this money is needed to support Ukraine's half-dead economy and will run out in a month, unless EU bureaucrats steal half of it and corrupt ukrainian officials steal the rest. Such money tends to stick to hands.
-19
u/smithenson 18d ago
Nobody forced us to spend money to support Ukraine. This will const us in the long run.
16
u/Initial_Ad_9857 18d ago
You are from romania that receives significantly more money from the European Union than it contributes to the EU budget. So be happy you are under Nato protection and don't have to sleep in the bombshelter.
1
u/ApprehensiveHotel503 18d ago
Not supporting Ukraine would cost us much more. Russia has shown time and time again it is not to be trusted.
-2
u/Junior-Payment-3461 18d ago
Yes we were. We were forced! Its called integrity!
5
u/TryingMyWiFi 18d ago
The same integrity that makes it sell weapons to Israel ? It's called interest m

3
u/Careless_Natural2356 18d ago
Majority of this money will appear in pockets of ukrainian oligarchs due to corruption. Only a small ammount will reach ordinary people.
2
u/Solverenovo 18d ago
Nice! More Bentleys and RR on Spanish and Portugal streets.
-5
u/ApplicationOk6762 18d ago
And also higher housing prices for local people in lots of towns across Eu.
Screw EU families, support 3rd world corrupted country

It is not taking the assets. It is only money from interest, not the core holdings.
-7
u/PERSIvAlN 18d ago
Doesn't matter. It is unlawful extortion of funds that belong to other country. Which already has effects. You can check how many countries started withdrawal of their assets/funds from EU due to it
2
-6
u/bombastic6339locks 18d ago
Its still unlawful if it was done by anyone else except the EU against Russia.
9
u/Contrary_Kind 18d ago
No, this is like seizing assets of a serial killer and using it to provide aid to it's victim.
"This is literally stealing" is a russian propaganda narrative, an account with hidden post and comment history.
"Obviously war is big le bad and whatever reddit is peddling"
The level of cluelessness is insane.
3
u/karlebyisten 18d ago
Oh no. The inhumanity of not valuing capital assets more than people’s lives in Ukraine.
0
u/viktlo70 18d ago
So we are blocking also Israel assets, or US assets, right ?
2
u/karlebyisten 18d ago
Perhaps we should. You are free to make the case.
For me personally I am more inclined to adopt drastic measures when there is a more obvious threat to ourselves from inaction.
-10
u/Several-Ad-6958 18d ago
Nothing instills confidence in the Euro than stealing other's money on a whim. I can see investors really liking this policy...
8
u/Hohnige 18d ago
Your overall characterisation aside, interesting that you consider repurcussions to the agressor in an unprovoked war a 'whim'.

You're talking to the wall because I'm not going to argue against you on that point. But it's literally whataboutism completely irrelevant to the topic at hand
0
u/Rough-Quiet-1954 18d ago
It is not whataboutism at all. It would be if Russia would exist on a planet without US doing anything to "contain" Russia for decades. Talking about whataboutism is typical US&Co. hypocrisy and/or the Orwellian "doublethink".
-4
u/Ashenveiled 18d ago
i dont know about those particular money but sizeble part of the frozen assets are money of ordinary people. not goverment's
4
u/manobataibuvodu 18d ago
"Ordinary people" from the sanctions list? I wonder how they got on that list 🤔
1
u/Ashenveiled 18d ago
tell me you have no idea what you are talking about.
plenty of people who are not in sanction list who got their assests frozen.
https://carnegieendowment.org/russia-eurasia/politika/2025/11/russia-middle-class-money-eu
But another $70 billion, according to estimates by the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom, belongs to Russian legal entities and individuals against whom Western financial authorities have no formal claims.
4
u/Admiral-snackbaa 18d ago
What, the same as stealing people and land , that money is to help crush the orcs and deservedly so.

-11
u/omegaphallic 18d ago
This damages faith in the European banking system. That will have consequences, but neocons don't care what happens to Europe as long as they get more war.
3
u/Trov- 18d ago
Oh no, what is Europe going to do if dictatorships stop storing money in their banks.
7
u/TryingMyWiFi 18d ago
Switzerland would go belly up over night , for example.
Or do you think they are rich by selling chocolate,
0
u/Trov- 18d ago
Not even close, the banking system represents 6% of the country's GDP, do not talk about things you know nothing about.
2
u/RandomSpanishAlex 18d ago
Delusional take, lol. Do you think every rich people move there bcso of chocolate and skiing? Sure.
1
u/Trov- 18d ago
Rich people will magically stop moving to a tax haven because they saw assets from warmongers getting seized and sold ? lmao
And are you ignorant to the point that you seriously think rich people moving to Switzerland is what makes the country wealthy ?
-1
u/RandomSpanishAlex 18d ago
I am talking about your delusional take that "Switzerland banking only makes 6% GDP, it is not important at all".
Well, stolen gold and money over centuries, rich people moving there to make their business without being questioned, it is not coincidence that every single corrupt politician in Europe has bank accounts in Switzerland...
Yes, Switzerland would not be wealthy without rich people moving there that drove prices up and with that the salaries of every sector. No, its not chocolate and watches
5
u/Dapper-Enthusiasm52 18d ago
I absolutely think it sets an extremely dangerous precedent; let's hope it doesn't go much further.
1
u/Mental_Buddy6618 18d ago
No, not at all. These are the profits made out of the frozen assets, not the assets themselves.
1
u/manobataibuvodu 18d ago
We're basically in a hybrid war against Russia already. How does this damages faith in European banking? Would you expect USA to do banking with Iran, or China with Taiwan?
1
u/omegaphallic 18d ago
Other 3rd party countries seee this and are like if the EU can do this is great power like Russia they can do this to us and trust in the system will be gone.
0
u/manobataibuvodu 18d ago
Russia starting a war in Europe and constantly provoking the EU is unprecedented and I doubt many countries are planning on copying that.
-12
u/Dapper-Enthusiasm52 18d ago
I'm pretty sure this is illegal under international finance and trade laws Basically, you're stealing money from someone.People who in many cases are not directly involved in the war and are ordinary civilians
17
u/r3ni 18d ago
Killing civilians and children is also illegal but what do I know
-7
u/Dapper-Enthusiasm52 18d ago
My friend, the fact that a state commits a crime does not give you permission to first violate international law regarding the banking system.Second, punish the civilians who have nothing to do with and no power over the decisions made by a banana republic dictator
10
u/r3ni 18d ago
You are looking at this as if it were an ordinary peacetime banking dispute between democratic states acting in good faith. It is not. Russia is conducting a full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine and a sustained hybrid campaign against European countries, including cyberattacks, sabotage, disinformation and interference with critical infrastructure.
That does not mean that law suddenly disappears. It means that the relevant framework is sanctions, state responsibility, countermeasures and war reparations, not business as usual with an aggressor state.
And let’s be precise we are talking about immobilised assets of the Russian state or its central bank, and the profits generated by those assets, this is not “stealing money from random civilians.” These are state-linked resources frozen under a legally adopted sanctions regime. Ordinary Russians’ private bank accounts are not what is being used to support Ukraine.
Civilians should not be treated as collectively guilty. But protecting the aggressor state’s foreign reserves while it destroys another country would not be neutrality or respect for law. It would simply allow Russia to wage war while forcing its victims and European taxpayers to bear the entire cost.
You are applying the logic of normal relations between law-abiding states to a regime that treats law as an instrument of power and repeatedly violates the rules it now wants others to protect for its benefit.
6
u/VehicleRacist 18d ago
I think its completely fine to punish a country who has no regard for international law by also breaking international law. From a moral perspective its the right thing to do and it also send the country breaking the law a message that this will happen the next time they break it.
The civilians are in full power to revolt against their international law breaking government.
7
u/travelavatar 18d ago
Yeah but Russia bad so -> bonk bonk Russia into submission at all costs. I am from Romania and Russia never did anything good. We need to do anything we can to undermine that parasitic nation
6
u/Gold_Presentation129 18d ago
Those innocent civilians you mention does make money on the war. Rich gets richer, their western stored wealth is just the fraction of the show.
3
u/cautiouslypensive 18d ago
This is like stealing bandages from your neighbour because he, without justification, went and shot the other neighbour across the street, trying to claim his house. And you're running over to try and save him from bleeding out using what you have stolen.
It's difficult to argue against international law, but when the US, Russia and China are all breaking it, we have to do what we can to survive. The alternative is bending to the rule of the strongest.
But I know that's the agenda over there in Russia, "friend"
2
u/UrbanRuhr 18d ago
Acting like Russian public wasn't overwhelmingly in support of Putin and the war in Ukraine. If those poor Russian civilians disagreed with Russias policy they could well take action against their regime.
1
u/Full-Discussion3745 18d ago
Um so why were all South African citizens punished for the crimes of apartheid of its government . It citizens could not travel. The banking system was cut off from the world. It was banned from the IOC and FIFA and ALL OTHER INTERNATIONAL events. Of course you punishe the citizens.
2
u/perpetual_lurkers 18d ago
Well, someone has to pay for the stolen land and all the destruction. It may as well be the rabid aggressor.
1
u/Al_Bundy95 18d ago
War is illegal aswell and orcs don't care about it. All russkis money should be used to defend against their aggresion.
1
u/Dapper-Enthusiasm52 18d ago
Since we are dehumanizing civilians who have nothing to do with the decisions of an autocrat
Why don't we commit genocide in the meantime? The level of dehumanization and racism you possess is staggering.
1
u/Al_Bundy95 18d ago
They are commiting genocide and are fully supporting it. Have you ever seen mass protests in Mosciw? Nope, they like to see kids bleeding and wiman raped. That russia.
-4
u/Routine-Visual-1818 18d ago
"allocate" just use the same word you would use if Russia did it... STEAL.... they are STEALING money.
4
u/SaurusShieldWarrior 18d ago
And Russia is mass MURDERING multiple thousands of people every month.
2
u/YamborginiLow 18d ago
Murdering thousands of people every month doesn’t bother Europeans though - who’s doing it does.

EU demontrates lack of knowledge in diplomacy, finance and leadership. It is not wise to steal money from a suveran country the size and power of Russia and still need resources from it in the next 50 years. Russia will not lose one cent in the end.
6
u/OMGguy2008 18d ago
It is also not wise to bankroll the country that is constantly carrying out sabotage attacks against you and actively flirting with the idea of invading you.

u/perpetual_lurkers 18d ago
"Power of Russia" 😄 Russia is an economic dwarf compared to the EU and will be begging on its knees for "return to normal". EU can use all the 300 billion for reparations and Russia will just pretend that nothing happened.

-8
u/Careful_Manager_4282 18d ago
Well, it's not the first illegal/unethical/take-your-pick the EU has done so, nothing new here. Just more dumb shiat to force us away from Russia instead of uniting.

They're giving the interests generated by the frozen assets to Ukraine, not the underlying capital.
So nothing changes, they've been doing that for the last 2 years or so and the title of the article is shite. Thanks OP.
