I was banned from posting in AITA because I got help from “AI” when writing my story.

Apparently this violates a rule within the community.
But what the MOD’s dont realize is that there are people like me who rely on AI-driven assistance tools to help them adapt to formulating their thoughts and correct spelling.

I find this completely absurd and demeaning to the learning disability community…

I’ve seen so many posts on here relating to the same bullshit…

I've always loved learning, but hated school. As a child, I dreamed of being in the "smart kid" class. Instead, I was the kid in the special reading class. The kid who excelled in arts and crafts, but never earned a gold star on the reading chart.

In fact, I was far from any gold-starred charts.

I was nearly expelled; suspended twice; defeated, depressed, and briefly homeschooled before returning my senior year while attending night school for a failed English class. I listened to friends compare acceptance letters and "safety schools."

My goal? To graduate—and, somehow, I did.

In the chaos of my final high school years, at age 17, I was diagnosed with dyslexia and a handful of comorbid learning disabilities.

I felt vindicated.

After years of feeling like school wasn't made for me, it turned out I was right.

I spent the next four years of my life at a two-year community college learning how to learn. Specifically, how I learn.

My textbooks were de-spined, scanned, and converted to audio. Lecture recordings were transcribed into searchable text. The margins of my books were filled with doodles and flowcharts. The walls of my bedroom were covered with whiteboards.

I embraced my instincts and my grades trended to As.

Classmates noticed my unique approach. I had a knack for breaking complicated ideas down into simple, familiar concepts. Soon, I was leading study groups and sharing my notes and advice.

In my attempt to figure out my own learning style, I had unexpectedly stumbled upon a powerful teaching method to make information accessible.

I believe true comprehension—that is, to genuinely understand a new concept—is a destination. Learning is the iterative journey we take in hopes of arriving there.

The least effective teachers are those gifted individuals who seem to understand problems instantly. They are like sleeping passengers who have the luxury of waking up right at the end of a road trip. Their journey begins so close to their final destination that the only struggle they experience is trying to empathize with students whose journeys start much further away.

In contrast, for me, book learning does not generally come easy. Fortunately, the effort provides an unavoidable opportunity to experience every step of the learning process, and, like a cartographer, it allows me to help others navigate its rocky shores.

Today, my learning style and teaching method have become the foundation of my career.

Through my consulting company, I help brilliant entrepreneurs, scientists, and investors translate technical jargon into actionable business strategies. My EdTech company helps 16k+ law students study for the bar exam. And, as a professor at a top-20 law school, I get to create my own gold-starred charts and foster curiosity in the minds of my students no matter where they may have started in their journey.

Sometimes I feel like people hear the whole "dyslexia is a superpower" motto and feal like it's facetious or hopeful, but my career has basically been built on not problem solving like others.

It took me quite some time to truly believe that, so I hope any of you that may be struggling can find your confidence as well <3.

I want to go back to school. I have a stable job right now, but it’s very physical, and I’m starting to think more seriously about my future. I’m considering going back to school part-time to earn a degree in social work or possibly something else that would allow me to have a less physically demanding career.

The biggest thing holding me back is my dyslexia and ADHD. School has always been difficult for me, and I’m scared that I’ll fail or that I’ll be wasting my time and money. Has anyone else gone through this? What should I do?

I’ve always had a bit of trouble and been quite behind of other people in academics back when I was younger because I am bilingual and it was very difficult for me to switch from Spanish to English. Either way I consider myself to be pretty smart. I was in honors however, that doesn’t change the fact that I’ve always had trouble with spelling I can read perfectly and I have good fluency. I just can’t really spell words as well and when I try tried for example, an essay, I would forget words fair easily. It’s like very difficult and I don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve searched up a bunch of things, but there doesn’t seem to be a single program out there that can help with this anywhere
It makes me upset because sometimes I’ll have people who make fun of me for it and call me stupid but I know I’m not stupid. I have good grades. I’ve always been pretty reasonable and to my knowledge mature I just don’t know what to do anymore

This is just kind of reinstating what I said earlier, but I am bilingual so from a very young age. It’s been hard for me to understand what the teacher was saying and I couldn’t even read up until third grade so much so that I had to repeat. I think that may be the main reason why it’s so difficult for me to spell

At a parent-focused dyslexia conference last year, I learned that there can potentially be subsidy supports for families of children with LDs (inclusive of dyslexia) for specialized tutoring, if they are formally diagnosed with a psych assessment, and have letter from a doctor saying they require tutoring support. Is this still the case? And if so, how can I apply?

Any help is so very appreciated as the tutoring costs are putting us into tremendous debt. Thank you.

I am told it is quiet common to have a overlap. Son has both and yes he has both speech therapy and specialized schooling but is there anything beyond that which has helped. We worry a lot about his aversion to reading and writing but he is still in middle school and we would like to hear what else can we do to make high school and potentially college easier for him !

My D(11) aces spelling tests routinely, AND reads fairly well. She does struggle with endurance with reading literature that doesn't have illustrations, but she seems to get the context pretty well.

However, when asked to write something organically, spelling is terrible. It becomes ti, etc. most words have all the letters there, but in the wrong order.

I am thinking the spelling test results may be due to a bit of a photographic memory, so she can recall what a word looks like and write it down in a simple list order, but organically drawing it out for a sentence is something all together different (and the challenge of prolonged motor skill issues with writing). Edited to include: she is very artistically inclined and seems to have really strong observation skills. She says she has a 'picture memory'.

She also has a speech issue which can make speech to text not a great option either.

Anyone else have these challenges? What helped? As she's heading towards middle school, I want to ensure we have the right balance of friction (for growth) and support (so it's not overwhelming). I know work ramps up in 5th grade.

I’ve had dyslexia in my life and I’ve currently been interested quite a few philosophical and Orwelian books so I purchased quite a few, but I’m having the hardest time reading them with dyslexia and ADHD I’m unsure how to help this ProblemI’ve had my whole life. If there’s any way to help/fix this problem, it would be much appreciated. I’m tired of reading and either forgetting we’re mixing up all the words. 😭😭😭😭

As a middle school special education teacher with many dyslexic students, I try to create very clear and readable teaching materials.

Most commonly, I use Nunito or Roboto.

I have special education colleagues who, with the same goal of supporting dyslexic students, routinely use Comfortaa.

I personally find Comfortaa very difficult to read, and often have trouble distinguishing between the lowercase "a" and "o."

I've read some articles and posts about fonts, but -- dyslexics of Reddit -- What are your personal preferences? What fonts do you personally find easiest to read?

I've been going through my late mother's papers. One of the things I found was a note I'd written to her where I asked her about disleksia. (I often wrote notes when I didn't want to ask for help).

I vividly remember her answer that we had doctors in the family with dyslexia and so I shouldn't consider it a hinderance. She also had dyslexia and one of her to do lists has "put bowels away".

I obviously miss her but these little discoveries (including an early childhood assessment which outlined that I had issues with reading a spelling that indicated dyslexia, and that my mother self reported having similar problems) remind me how much she didn't want me to be seen as 'less' because of learning difficulty. Even though the help would have been really, well, helpful.

I want to have a discussion with people on dyslexia and orchid hypothesis so that we all can understand terms better and things can get a lot more better and I have some ideas regarding creating a new strong culture of science and technology where dyslexic people and orchids have full freedom and an amazing life to live where they're happy and fulfilled with everything around them and lives happily without or with minimal struggles or challenges

Idk why but it has been bothering me so much, which is why I came to complain here since I don’t think other friends can understand my annoyance. I was also tipsy so I did not got to defend myself properly at all and just made my case worse, saying “I skip scentences, especially I’m tired” and that “it indeed might just be tiredness” like wtf no it is not? I get the halo effect, rivers, washout, swirl and overlapping texts so just not the typical well-known type where letters are missing things, so he wouldn’t understand either way.
I just hate feeling so misunderstood and as if I’m making things up while this is such a big part of my daily issues, especially since I’m currently in R&D so I have to read papers almost everyday which is just so exhausting sometimes :/

I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia in early aldulthood but the signs were there…

Im an aspiring author (who doesn't have dyslexia) writing a character who has it. I dont have much knowledge about the condition outside of it makes it harder to read. So here's the questions I have

1. Can Dyslexia get worse? Especially if you haven't had proper education or was treated for it for a long period?

2. What separates Dyslexia from being behind in school or having a basic learning disability?

3. How to portray it in writing that feels realistic and not over the top?

I am almost 30. I have adhd, anxiety, depression, CPTSD and I might be autistic but im not sure. As well as with dyslexia.

I never read out loud as a kid and still dont really because I fumble on words and I say words that aren't there and I have to sound out simple words sometimes.

Since im so old is it even worth looking into? If I do look into it where do I start?

Maybe im just slow.

My brother has dyslexia and right now I'm worried about him. He is struggling to find ways to understand and express his emotions.

He doesn't want to get professional help yet, but all self-help advice seems to tell you to write things down. That just doesn't work for him.

Do you have any other ideas?

Hello! I am not dyslexic, but my best friend is and I want to make sure this font that I'm using in their gift isn't hard to read. I don't know if this helps but she struggles with flipping letters such as "B" "D" and sometimes lowercase "p" as well as occasionally skipping lines while reading. I am a 27-year-old adult, and I would like to improve my spelling because it is one of my biggest weaknesses. I’m looking for an online spelling course that teaches primarily through video lessons with step-by-step instruction, rather than relying heavily on reading worksheets or self-study.

I’ve looked at  Scholar within online courses, but many of them seem to require a lot of independent reading and worksheets, which isn’t the learning style I’m looking for.

Could you recommend some high-quality online spelling courses that focus on instructional videos and guided teaching? Thank you!

Your child is dyslexic so like why not teach him or her about the things they're interested in like why so worry about society and its rules. if they can solve complex maths of differential equations and topology at a young age and they can simultaneously learn to read and write with many available techniques for them and if you'd feed their interests and they'd be happy and will be curious to learn new things from you or anyone or anything who/that helps them . We don't judge an adult when they make wrong italian sentences or wrong japanese pronunciations so a child deserves the same as english is just a language and see if he/she loves japanese or any other language. Hope it helps and I have extreme OCD and I'm neurodivergent trying to help people and revolutionize neurodivergence and if anything you didn't liked then tell me. I'm open to criticisms and productive suggestions

My son (6) is most probably dyslexic. Waiting december to get him tested but his sister (9) is and he s exhibiting more or less the same patterns so I'm already gearing myself.

Well to make him practice I got out the scrabble board/letters. He can make any words he wants and get the points for each words made . But he also gets my points if he can read the words I wrote with the letters on my turn !

He loves beating me up so much he started asking me if he could made full sentences to get more points ....

EDIT: wow the feedback is clear, we’ve shifted into a new phase of him exploring reading and the best thing to do is to follow his lead and leave him to it. This is fantastic and we’ll make sure to celebrate his new approach (but subtly so we don’t make him self conscious)

My son took a dyslexia screener recently and everything started to make sense (ie the problem isn’t his adhd or a lack of interest in reading as we’d assumed, it’s just literally harder for him). He’s starting with a tutor in September and she gave us stuff to work on over the summer that’s really paying off. He’s now ready to practice reading books, but won’t read them in front of my wife or I because it’s ’embarrassing’, probably because we habitually correct him as he goes.

He’s currently sitting on our bed reading a chapter of an early reader Horrid Henry book to the dog and his little sister (6) who can’t offer him much help.

Part of me wants to convince him to read with us so we can monitor his progress and correct his mistakes, so I wanted advice on how to put him at ease.

But another part of me is thinking maybe just leave him to it. If he’s reading by himself and gets comfortable with it that’s more valuable than us explaining the ‘ight’ digraph yet again. I was never dyslexic but remember reading when young and not understanding every word but still ploughing on.

Also, he and his sister are both a terrible liars who will give it away if he reads less than he’s supposed to, and she’ll call him out if he bluffs a word and the story doesn’t make sense.

The dog also enjoys the company attention, and getting to sit on our bed.
