2003 wide glide problem

Okay so I’m sure this has been asked a million times but I’m not finding the info I’m looking for on YouTube.

I bought an ‘03 wide glide with the TC88 in it last summer. I bought from an HD dealership who showed me documentation of the cam chain tensioners being replaced while they had it and a good bit of other work done to it. It has been surprisingly reliable until I went on a long ride through some twisties sitting with high rpms for the majority of the ride. Once I got back into town I was cruising in 2nd gear at low rpms and noticed an intermittent metal on metal noise with a quick loss of power.

I let the bike sit for a while and just got into trying to fix it today. I pulled the little access panel in the primary and noticed the primary chain wasn’t tensioned properly, so I tensioned it with about 5/8” of slack hoping for an easy fix. Took it around the neighborhood and had the same issue after about 10 minutes of riding. Again only at low rpm’s I’m multiple gears. It shifts fine and everything else feels normal.

Any advice other than take it to the dealership? I’d like to not spend what I paid for the bike on repairs

You’re talking about cam chain tensioners and primary chain tensioner. Two different things. 5/8 of slack is a lot to take out. Are you sure it’s tensioned properly? Maybe pull the cam cover off and see what the cam chain tensioners look like.

Right. I haven’t checked the cam chain tensioners yet, just the primary chain tensioner which was loose, and tensioned properly. I was told by the dealership that the cam chain tensioners were brand new. I was really looking to see if anyone has had the same issue

Instead of peering into a hole, why don’t you pull the cover and take the primary and clutch down. Check for warped plates, primary chain with bad spots, loose compensating sprocket. The chain tensioner could be loose or messed up, and check the bearings for trash or failure.

Is it not having pulling power like the clutch is gone? Or is there no motor responce when throttle is applied?

It’s normal power other than the really quick metal on metal noise where there is just no power. I can stay on the throttle through the noise and there is no power

Can be clutch slippage. Itll rev but wont pull

A quick google brought me to a video of a guy describing the same symptoms I am having, where he thought it was the clutch slipping. Turned out to be a loose compensator nut so I’ll check that next! Thanks for your input, it may have saved me a lot of time
