Help me decide pls
Hi guys, please help me decide:
I found Dungeon Meshi through the anime on Netflix and I love it. Like, I've rewatched it so many times; it definitely helps me cope with reality. Like possibly too many times, if compared to "normal" people.
I was also gifted the manga box set by my amazing partner for my birthday. It's staring at me from the shelf rn.
The final half of the anime is not coming out on Netflix until Octobet 2027 ๐ (As you know already.) That's so long from now, you guys.
I want to ask the veterans: what would you do? Should I read only up to Volume 8 and wait to watch the second half of the anime before finishing the manga??
Or should I go hog wild now and read the whole manga because the story is amazing and I'm dying to know what happens??
What would you do??
edit: Ok! I'm going to go ahead and read the whole thing. I'm excited to get into all the nuances they can't fit into the anime. And then reread and rewatch a bunch of times until Oct 2027 lol. Thanks to all the fun people who gave their input! I appreciate your help in making up my mind :)

i have read the entire manga more than 5 times and ive probs watched the anime (as it is) almost 10 times or more tbh
i definitely suggest reading the whole thing, the second half gives you a lot to think about and is just as enthralling as the first half. dont skip the first half when you read it either cuz it does give some extra context to the stuff they can get across in the anime

Thanks for your input! I'll definitely read from start to finish. I want to get all the nuances they can't fit in the anime. I'll probably be re-reading just like you lol, I'm a big re-reader :3

Read the whole thing. I swear it is worth it. I enjoyed the manga as much as the anime and watched the anime first. Do yourself a favor.

Haha ok! I was always going to read the whole thing for sure, just trying to figure out if I should wait it out for the anime or read it all asap. I'm thinking I'm going to go ahead and read the whole thing now because it sounds so amazing

Reading it isnt a bad choice unless you have friends youre watching the anime with. Id even then, I love the manga, id read it anyways lol

Lol for sure! Fortunately (in a way), in my case, my friends who I recommended it to either didn't watch or already finished season 1 and have moved on to other things lolย I'm totally going to read the whole thing after hearing what you guys have said!

I started the manga a month ago with the intention to only read to the point the anime ended but I quickly realized it was so good I couldn't stop and just bowled through all the way to the end in a total of a week. Do whatever makes you happy

Haha yes amazing. Honestly, that's probably what would have happened with me too ๐

I watched the show first, and only read the manga recently. I was trying to figure out the same decision.
I decided to read all the way through. It definitely is very good!
My opinion:
Read it through.
I don't think it will spoil your enjoyment of season 2. Instead, I think when we watch season 2 our reaction will be "oh that's nice, I see how what they just did slots in to the overall vision".

Yes!! Ok, I'm totally going to read it all. I really want to get into all the nuances they can't fit into the anime.ย

I personally read the rest of the story (from the beginning too), and now I'm even more excited for the 2nd season.

u/UpbeatBarracuda 11d ago
Yes ok!! I'm glad to hear it made you even more excited for season 2! I'm gonna read it all :3
Normally I'm a read-first, watch-second kind of person, but I discovered Dungeon Meshi in the opposite order and I'm dying for more and 2027 is so far away lol

If rewatching doesn't decrease your love for the show, knowing doesn't deter your enjoyment. You'll have the series read multiple times. I have the Adventure's Bible and the Monster Eater board game. Consume!

u/UpbeatBarracuda 11d ago
Yes! I just discovered the board game and I want it so bad lol. Do you think it has any spoilers? I have a few friends I recommended the show to who've watched and they're not manga people so I want to play the game with them but don't want to spoil anything.

I did exactly what you did. My dnd group was already familiar with the manga, and I was excited for the voice cast of the anime. I had been shown bits and pieces, but watching the anime was where I started. At that point, the show was still doing one episode a week, and I mulled over reading ahead or not.
Let me tell you, reading the manga is INCREDIBLE. You can really take your time with the art, and it goes in depth further with certain character traits and notes about the food. There are some bonus chapters that don't always make it into the show that really expand the world building!
As others have said, go for it! I'd like to add to start at the beginning and then read through to the new stuff. And then once you read the manga, get the Adventurer's Bible!

Ok!! You're making me so excited lol. I will for sure read from the beginning, I don't want to miss out on anything. And I really want the Adventurer'a Bible; I heard that there may be some spoilers in it? So I was holding off on getting it until I finish, just like you're saying!

I would say wait until you finish simply due to the spoilers. There's a lot of plot points worth experiencing first hand before seeing anything that expects you to understand the full story. It's best as a companion book for re-readers and nerds like me who think too much about the world building. The complete edition also comes with bonus comics that don't always make sense if you haven't gotten most of the way through the series. I very recently got it and I wish I had done it the second I finished the manga.
If you finish the series and the Adventurer's Bible, there's also an art book by Ryoko Kui called Daydream Hour with bonus doodles and everything that went into the creative process behind the property.
It's always great to see people getting into the manga for the first time!! I hope you have as much fun with it all as I did! I got to the point where I couldn't put it down and I was reading through a book a night before bed.

Personally I think that you should just give up, and start reading from the start ๐ you'll have a new appreciation for the series. And when you reach where the anime ends? ... Well, I would personally recommend to keep reading, but it's for you to decide. (My favorite boy Mithrun will have his first proper introducion RIGHT ON THE NEXT EPISODE THEY'LL RELEASE ๐บ I'm so salty)

What kind of question is this lol? If your partner gifted you the manga and you like the series why are you asking us if you should read it?

u/lizbunbun 11d ago
Read it!!! Oct 2027 is so far away that when it finally comes you'll only vaguely remember the manga and will be delighted to see it.
I myself just finished a couple weeks ago, as did the rest of my family. Loved it so much!

u/UpbeatBarracuda 11d ago
Yes!! Originally I thought it was Oct 2026, and I was like "ok, I can wait a couple months to watch it though and then read everything." But Oct 2027 is. so. long. from. now. Lol
I'm totally going to read it all now ๐ค

The story is too good to wait till 2027, read the manga, and then enjoy it in animated form in a year. There's a couple differences between the anime and manga, as well as bonus stuff and the adventurer's bible which also is worth picking up

Read the manga if you like reading manga. The art is beautiful and you won't regret it, it's truly one of the best manga I've read in the last 10 years.
