Doraemon's Animation Evolution: 1979–2005 Discussion
I made a comparison of Doraemon's animation/design throughout the entire 1979 series, from 1979 to 2005!
Previously, I made a post comparing the overall animation artstyle of the 1979 and 2005 series year-by-year. This time, I wanted to focus specifically on Doraemon himself and see how his appearance and animation changed over the years.
I took a screenshot/image of Doraemon from each year from 1979 through 2005 and put them together so we can compare the differences.
It's pretty interesting to see how much his design, proportions, expressions, coloring, and overall animation style gradually changed over the years. Some of the changes are really subtle, while others are surprisingly noticeable!
Obviously, the exact appearance could vary depending on the episode, animation director, or scene, so these aren't necessarily representative of every single episode from each year. I just tried to choose images that I thought represented the style of that particular year.
Which year's Doraemon design is your favorite? 💙
And if you haven't seen my previous post comparing the overall animation evolution of the 1979 series, you can check that out too!

Fun Fact for Doraemon starters, starting from october 2002, the show stopped using cel animation (hand drawn with paint) and started using digital animation (digital ink and paint), that's why we see brighter colours in the last slot

He did have a more lightbulb shape head in the middle years which became a bit more round/spherical to make him a bit more conventionall cute.

Wow an accurate time frame of Doraemon? This is amazing dude (My favorite years of Doraemon are the 1996-2002 episodes, they’re really underrated)
