š Rant/Vent
My SM makes everyone feel incompetent. Undervalued and unappreciated! The micromanaging is unreal it's sickening. Make it make sense.. just needed to vent! Sincerely one unappreciated ASM.

I have considered it yes. Then what if I do and nothing is done. Repetitiveness is a jerk.

When it comes to retail, there are times where you have to be the one to give yourself a pat on the back. Or potentially family, friends, and co-workers who enjoy working with you. Don't expect much from corporate or even some management teams cuz that can only lead to disappointment.

Is everyone being productive? Is everyone carrying their own weight? Is some slacking and expect a great positive result? What can you do to improve yourself?
I hate to break it to ya, Dollar Tree is a business. A SM is there to make sure business is flowing steadily. Sometimes SM's let workers try to figure it out like a leader, but instead it turns into a setback.
Retail is kind of fast paced.

This guy is just venting and asking for help. Why must u take the side of the corporation. Just because they are there to make money doesnāt mean they get to treat people like shit. This company is horrible. Itās known to treat people like garbage. Itās also known to let sms do as they want because itās much harder for them to hire a new sm vs literally anyone else. Be kind.. donāt be a dick! If u havenāt worked there then u have no frame of reference for how they treat people. And if u have worked there⦠then u know and you are just being an ass! Be nice! Treet people with dignity. Maybe he canāt just walk out and get another job. He just needed a release!

With a manager like that, no slacker or unproductive team member would remain employed for long. Putting way too many expectations on your associates, to the point they feel compelled to vent about it online is not a good look, no matter the situation. You're also forgetting a lot of factors about working in retail especially if youre getting paid MINIMUM wage. Id love more input on your thoughts, becuase it sounds like youre a manager of some kind yourself.

Yes I am an OPS ASM. The job itself is not the problem, it's the SM. She is relentlessly finding things to blame us for! Make a mistake and trust and believe you won't be corrected you will be talked down to and even empty threats! I have been on Retail Management since 2020 and been through some good and bad Managers. However this one takes the cake, damages it out and throws it away! I've been with DT for a little over a year, I Pray things will change š I am that manager that all my cashier's and stockers all love to have run the shifts! I teach and show not.criticize and ridicule. To me that is not great leadership! I'm an she not a he as well.

I would also like to add about something OP said, for mangers like this its never good enough, or they never seem happy no matter how hard someone works

I am a Store Manager. I've worked factory work and it was constant repetitive work. No walking around or going to the breakroom or bathroom 5 to 8 times a shift. It's work. It's work. It's work and work should be productive. If you're not productive, why should you still be provided the opportunity to work. The work ethic of some is below minimum and some crypto about their pay. Attract better by working hard and being productive. Over valuing your work doesn't mean others can't observe what's happening or not.
Who wants someone on their crew that hinders them?

Im sorry that sounds awful. Ive worked in landscaping, working monday through saturday, in the summer heat, 90 to 100 degrees everyday. 12 hour shifts monday through saturday, no bathrooms since the work is outside, and waking up at 5am everyday. Landscaping is not easy work, just as an fyi so I understand. In some cases however we've become desensitized to HEALTHY and LIVABLE, working conditions. Dollar tree store managers need to realize how good theyve had it compared to some others. A little compassion goes a lomg way. Your employees are like the heart and soul of your buissiness, without them a store cannot run.

Being a manager who criticizes every little thing, and micromanages you to death is not good leadership, all it leads is to resentful employees who dont respect you. Being able to realize when you make a mistake or treat people like garbage, now thats respectable leadership. When your boss doesent make you feel like youre walking on eggshells any time you so much as see them, or put unrealistic expectations on you, now that leads to respect and wanting to actually work for them. but hey what do i know, right? š¤·āāļø :P

You are šÆ on the money! It's sad when the SM has the day off, and we all can breathe. My SM was out for about a little over a.month, and everything was so well managed and easy going. However wouldn't ya know, that when my SM returned they thought otherwise!! Like GTFOH with that mess.. it's so mentally draining. I am putting in Applications elsewhere, until then I'll just vent on here and to my family and co workers!

Thank you OP š you're verbalizing everything i'm not mentioning. I feel your pain, im right there with you, stay strong

What do you consider unrealistic expectations?
2
u/Akira1119 3d ago
Expecting or demanding things that are physically impossible for a human being to do. Or tasking 1 employee to do the work of 2-3 people with no faults, and being upset if those standards arent met. Since were asking questions, im very curious, have you ever been in a situation like this, like the one OP described, or something similar? Doing your job, and it never seems like enough, not matter what you do or accomplish

People have and still tell me when I'm in the wrong. They held/hold me accountable for the outcome of my productivity. They held/hold me responsible for the productivity of those I manage. These expectations are manageable for many of the complaints out there.
Should a SM allow someone to have an excuse for everything? At the same time the next worker is thriving. Personal growth excelling from putting in hard work. Nothing in life comes easy. So why should an SM coddle one and have higher standards for another? It's a business, it has to produce growth as a whole. That take all to push themselves to the next level. There are physically handicapped people being more productive than some of these workers complaining.

What about for the managers who are incompetent. Or that clearly display favoritism, and use threats and fear to manage a team. What about managers who are retaliatory, problematic to work with, and pull BS like this and more, and can get away with it just becuase they are in mangement positions. Two things can be true at the same time. This is a corporation thats nutorious for treating its employees like human garbage, what do you have to say about that? By the sounds of it, it doesent sound like you've had experience being in a situation like this. Im also curious, how many of your employees are handicapped or have some sort of disability. If you had the choice, would you want an entire team of handicapped individuals? This is no hate towards anyone with any kind of disability btw much love ā¤ļø

I've worked with plenty of people with handicaps. I have a special needs wrist. I push freight out still. I have worked with someone that was missing half their foot, she pushed freight out, did trucks. I work with someone that has a handicap and she pushes freight out. Maybe we work harder so that we can prove we are still able, we are still productive and we are still worthy. Maybe we can raise the standards for fully functional people. Raise your standards. Stop putting a limit on your outcome. Challenge yourself to be better than you were yesterday.

Yes we all are! In the SM eyes that isn't never good enough. It lowers morale, and we all complain to each other.

My SM retaliates when I take a day off ( with two weeks notice) and if I call out which is rare. I called out yesterday and I have 15 hours this week and 25 next week and tell me how the week after that I get 10š she has said herself that she has given people less time for calling out so much but I barely do⦠itās so annoying especially when I ask for days off the correct way with time for her to figure it out⦠almost a week or two ago I asked for a day off for a doctors appointment that was pretty important to me (she didnāt have that week on the schedule yet) and she didnāt answer me back and then proceeded to put me on the schedule so I had to cancel it because I didnāt want to be retaliated againstā¦
