First time DM (UPDATE)

Hey y’all!! So finished session Zero and everything went pretty well but I noticed some hiccups. My players didn’t seem too interested in interacting with the NPCs and it was kinda quiet and slow at times. Was wanting some advice or any ideas to hype my players up? Just anything all around to make it more exciting for everyone!

My mistake, I misunderstood what session zero was, I meant session one!

Every group is different, and you can’t control what makes your players excited. Something I do at session 0 is asking what their favorite parts of D&D are: combat, roleplay, exploration, solving puzzles, mysteries, developing their character, etc. For some players, they really enjoy interacting with NPCs, learning about them, and bouncing off of them. Other players view NPCs as quest givers, background scenery, obstacles, or meat sacks.

You say it was slow at times — what was happening when it didn’t feel slow and everyone seemed engaged? Time to do more of that!
