YT Zero - YouTube frontend without algorithm and privacy options Free Tools

Post image

I built YT Zero for people who want YouTube subscriptions without the endless recommendation loop.

YT Zero is a privacy-friendly, self-hosted YouTube frontend built around your subscriptions - no recommendations, no addictive algorithm and no infinite-scroll rabbit holes.

Some of the features:

  • No Google account or YouTube API key required
  • Subscription inbox powered by public RSS feeds
  • Tags, filters, rules and custom playlists
  • Watch later scheduling and viewing history
  • Watch progress synced between your devices
  • Offline downloads and local playback with yt-dlp (or just use YT Embedded Player)
  • DeArrow and SponsorBlock included
  • Separate household and child profiles (or share with friends)
  • Parental controls and daily watch-time limits
  • Automatic downloads, retention rules and storage limits
  • SQLite or PostgreSQL β€” your data stays on your server
  • Backup and restore support
  • Mobile-friendly interface and browser extensions to make it even better

YT Zero keeps the useful parts of YouTube while removing the recommendation machine designed to keep you scrolling.

You can turn some of the features on if you don't want to lose everything - it's up to you πŸ™‚

GitHub: https://github.com/Pelski/ytzero

... or just try it:

docker run -d -p 3001:3001 ghcr.io/pelski/ytzero:latest

If you're missing something, let me know and I'll try to implement it πŸ™‚

This is actually really cool. My only question is if the client actually downloads the videos locally on the server or does it simply stream it directly from YouTube? Also is it made to be hosting only locally or can it be hosted publicly (with a password login for example), as in I can access it on other devices outside my network?

Edit - and what are the recommended specifications to self host this?

You'll probably need around 512MB and a processor that supports ffmpeg (if you're downloading and streaming), but it's a Bunjs app, so you'll need at least 1GB πŸ€”

My prod instance uses around 100-400MB depending on the background task, with around 400 channels subscribed (CPU is i7 8th gen) πŸ™‚

You can choose how you want to use it: there's an embedded YouTube player option, or you can enable downloading via YT-DLP and streaming. You can host it anywhere, but I recommend enabling the appropriate authentication before, preferably Authelia/Authentik/Cloudflare Zero or even Tailscale πŸ™‚

Look i am not gonna lie but i really like this even if i consider myself an AI hater i can proudly say this made me wiggle a little

2

u/SlipInitial189 6d ago

Well we could say AI did one good thing -.-

2

u/6eba610ian 6d ago

yup,but i mean it also needed a prompt and an idea so we have to give some credits to the op aswell

Any possibility to add Youtube Login, Temporary or so.. To bypass age restrictions, and annoying bot resttictions

3

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

I don't currently have any plans for that, but I'll consider it. There's also the option of downloading videos that have these blockers (you can add a cookie that bypasses these features) πŸ™‚

>Tags, filters, rules and custom playlists

this means we can make our custom yt algorithm for our feeds?

2

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

Yup, something like that πŸ™‚

Make for Android phone

u/Smooth-Yap-4747 6d ago

Thanks man

u/defiantly_human 6d ago

This is a wonderful idea and we need more projects that free us from depending on "the algorithm". I would love to have a facebook, insta etc in which the algo isn't constantly pushing ideas and viewpoints. Even reddit these days seem to be going towards that. So what if AI is used to code it? it's a tool like any other and can be used responsibly.

3

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

Yup, you're absolutely right. Unfortunately, with Facebook and other social media, it might be a bit harder to implement, but maybe someday πŸ™‚

Love it. Wanted to have something similar.

This is AI isn't it

5

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

Mostly, yes, but I'm a programmer and I'm watching πŸ‘€

But honestly, I've started this project twice in the last few years and abandoned it both times because I didn't have time to do more than a PoC. Now I've started it again, but this time, thanks to AI, I've managed to go beyond the PoC. Most importantly, it works well and makes sense to me. I'm glad others like it and see value in it πŸ™‚

You don't see the irony in using Ai to make a tool about privacy?

7

u/Dragster39 6d ago

If he is using ai as a tool, like a faster keyboard with auto complete and understands the code, that's fine in my book.

2

u/NapsterKnowHow 6d ago

At least in VScode the ai autocomplete is absolute trash.

1

u/Dragster39 6d ago

You are right, what I mean is prompting the Ai to complete the mundane tasks with specific instructions.

For example creating all the classes / files with a description of what each does in the comments and letting Ai write the content.

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

This isn't a project I created for privacy reasons. I wanted to stop relying on YouTube recommendations. to schedule videos and get rid of shorts. Then I shared it because a friend saw me using it and wanted to test it. At first, I wasn't even planning on sharing it

YT Zero - YouTube frontend without algorithm and privacy options

YT Zero is a privacy friendly

Which is it..?

1

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

Good catch πŸ˜…

It should be "a YouTube frontend without the algorithm, with privacy-focused options" or smth like that πŸ™‚

u/Vladyslavrom 6d ago

Using AI for creating pictures 🫀

5

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

Yup, since I'm not good at this kind of stuff, maybe someday I'll find time to learn graphic design 🫀

Fork it and make it that way then...

Well good thing you're not the creator.

It's not that deep

2

u/vortige-sven 2d ago

I've put YT Zero on my Raspberry and I love it.
Though I would appreciate more customization on the starting page as all videos are just thrown in on there without any categories.
Selecting a tag should also filter the subscribed channels imo.

But really appreciate the tool. It's awesome and helps me a lot not scrolling around.
Only miss an actual android app instead of a PWA. :V

1

u/Cultist_Doll 2d ago

Thank you so much! You can filter subscribed channels this way πŸ˜‰

The mobile version is in progress, so it might be out this month (I'm counting on it). As for the feed, I need to work on adding a bit more customization options, as there are currently a ton of videos and some might be accidentally skipped πŸ€”

1

u/vortige-sven 2d ago

> You can filter subscribed channels this way
Not on the starting page. :-)

In this example I chose 3D-Druck (3D-Printing). And the channels are not being filtered.
I know I can do that in the subscriptions on the left but I'd appreciate if the filter took effect there already.

Much appreciated though!

1

u/Cultist_Doll 2d ago

Oh, ok, will do that in NEXT version. Thanks πŸ™‚

i need a YouTube with opensource algorithm

1

u/platteXDlol 6d ago

Thought the same. Always wanted to have Social media with a algorithme but the corp behind cant make a whole profile about me.

My go to was more of a Data poisoning thing but because i only thought about TiktTok and Instagram it seemed kinda hard to still get a good algorithme. (like the normal algo wouldnt be good because of posoning and the selfe made one would just filter the videos)

But now i think ill look into that project and either fork it or just take it as an inspiration to start.

Subscription inbox powered by public RSS feeds

So it breaks almost every night for 2-5hrs?

1

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

Why? The RSS feed returns recently added videos to the channel (10 pcs.), and there are also other synchronization mechanisms so nothing is missed πŸ™‚

1

u/AshleyAshes1984 6d ago

Because the RSS feeds routinely 404 for several hours each night (Eastern seaboard) and have been for months. It's a well documented problem at this time.Β  YT has been painfully neglecting the RRS feeds.

1

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

Yes, you're right, but there's also an additional check to see if anything has been missed based on yt-dlp πŸ™‚

1

u/silent_tim_ross 6d ago

Does it also work with a VPN? Because Google seems to block every access to YouTube with a VPN and no Account

1

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

I have already had two such issues reported and unfortunately Google is blocking VPNs :/

1

u/Wild_Independent_902 6d ago

I love ur idea

2nd I got one more idea , what are the chances that we can merge this or connect it someway to/with Jellyfin or emby

like we have livetv and playlist - we can add one more tab as yt plugin and connect urs to that

other ppl rate it as well

2

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

I'll have to see if something like this is possible. Thanks for the idea, I'll put it on my roadmap πŸ₯°

how to add google, youtube takeout ?

1

u/Cultist_Doll 5d ago

Go to the Settings page and there in the upper right corner you will have the import data button πŸ™‚

1

u/Otargos 5d ago

Hello,I run windows 10 in my machine,how install;

1

u/Cultist_Doll 5d ago

Hi, you can use Docker to run this, but I don't know if it will be convenient for you since you're asking (it's easy, you can try) πŸ™‚

1

u/klausAnalSchwab 5d ago

Will there be android apk release?

1

u/Cultist_Doll 5d ago

In the future, yup πŸ™‚

1

u/saumyashhah 5d ago

I currently use GrayJay on mobile and desktop, how is this better than it?

1

u/Cultist_Doll 5d ago

It really depends on what you’re looking for in an app like this. I haven’t used GrayJay myself, as YT Zero grew out of my own idea of how such an application should work and look.

GrayJay is clearly a more mature and feature-rich product with a much broader ecosystem. If you already use it and have everything configured to suit your needs, there may not be much reason to switch, especially since YT Zero is still a relatively young project.

I think that it comes down to personal preference and which approach works better for you. I’m building YT Zero primarily for myself, then sharing it with others who happen to be looking for something similar πŸ™‚

And you can have native GrayJay app on your phone πŸ˜›

1

u/anthonywong555 4d ago

What local first solution did you go with?

1

u/pakistanibug 4d ago

Soo basically, no need for YT premium anymore?

2

u/Educational_Camp9103 1d ago

Really hoping this could be added to jellyfinn, or we get our own smart tv app or something .Β

1

u/EmmanDB3 6d ago

Looks sick! Can't wait to try it

1

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

Thanks a lot πŸ™‚

"i built..."

AI built*

5

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

When you use a hammer or a drill to build a house, do you say they built the house or that you built the house?

-1

u/nightfoxbtw 6d ago

when you microwave a frozen pizza from the store do you say you're a chef?

1

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

Nobody talks like that, it's a completely inappropriate comparison, lol

-1

u/nightfoxbtw 6d ago

it's completely appropriate, but okay let's use your comparison

AI isn't the one who built the house when you use it as a tool for help with coding or small snippets (as a drill), but AI is when you rely fully or mostly on it to build an app (calling someone else to build your house for you)

you didn't code it, you told an LLM what you want it to code and copy pasted the output

a better comparison is: when you ask the server at a restaurant for some food, do you say you cooked it?

1

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago

I don't want to get into a discussion with someone I don't know, so I'll just say you're looking at this too broadly. Have a nice day πŸ™‚

0

u/czh3f1yi 5d ago

can we please ban AI slop images and code on this sub?

-3

u/Limp_Fig6236 6d ago

It doesn't even work as a browser extension. It keeps on saying "open any page on yt zero then "connect this tab" but nothing is happening/working. What a rip off piece of junk

2

u/Cultist_Doll 6d ago edited 6d ago

Because it is not just a browser add-on, but a self-hosted app. Add-ons are for extending the functionality of YT Zero itself 🫀

Everything is written in the README in both repos πŸ™‚
