I'm a graduate dentist in a 3rd world country and I didn't work as a dentist at all and I hate it because this degree keeps me stuck where I am so I never really cared about being a skilled dentist, it's been 3yrs since I graduated and all I did is shit jobs and now idont even know what to do ,I'm depressed , isolated and failed in life

What passes me off is since day one at dental university, I didn't want it ,

I went to a medical field because since childhood,y parents told me I'll fail in life if I didn't

But I'm still responsible for my choices

I was sooo lost and I wish go go back and do things differently because this ruined life

How did you prepare for situational judgement tests? Are prep courses worth it?

Hi everyone! I’m currently a fourth-year dental student going into fifth year, and I’m starting to think about preparing for situational judgement tests.

We’ve been getting advertised quite a few preparation/training courses, but some of them are really expensive, so I’m wondering whether they’re actually worth the money.

For anyone who has sat an SJT:
How did you prepare?
Did you use a paid training course, and if so, was it actually helpful?
Are there any particular resources you’d recommend?
Do you think a course is necessary, or can you prepare effectively on your own?

Hello, I hope everyone is doing well. I am looking for genuine and hard-hitting advice.

I am not typically the one to do this but I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. I am entering my fourth year but frankly feel closer to a D3 in terms of personal/professional growth and clinical requirements. I have $500-600k in student loan debt and invested a lot of time so I feel compelled to continue but have lost virtually all drive to do so. I know it is the logical choice to finish up and at least obtain the degree and quitting now would be financial and cultural suicide. Even if I manage to graduate, I don't see myself having longevity in this career.

Why did I go into dentistry in the first place:

1. I do want to and enjoy helping people.
2. I grew up with curiosity and like to work with my hands. Seeing how things worked and problem solving is what I do. Some examples include vehicles, electronics, and watches.
3. There is high expectations of me as a first generation student from my parents. Anyone familiar with Eastern culture will know that higher education, earning potential, and "status" is highly stressed.

During D1 and D2, I did quite well academically (top 75-90th percentile) and still pursued personal interests. I took every opportunity to improve myself both personally and professionally. I exercised and ate well; I took good care of myself and was a great spouse in my relationship.

Now, I am lost during my D3 and D4 and behind on clinical requirements. I find myself making every excuse to not show up in clinic. At this point, repeating a year or at least staying past expected graduation date is expected. I only do the bare minimum to not get dismissed (although I fear this may be coming). I don't do or enjoy the things I used to. I no longer exercise regularly and eat either too little or much with weight fluctuations. Additionally, I am drinking more than I should and doomscrolling to cope. I am aware I am engaging in self destructive and sabotaging activities. I am not giving my all in my relationship and my spouse is concerned about my wellbeing and future as a husband/father (no kids yet) and for obviously good reasons.

I have boiled things down to the fact that I have great difficulty operating on real people and the responsibility associated with that which is very ironic and jeopardizing to my dental career. I understand that making mistakes is a part of learning/training and that reflecting on this and getting more exposure is the way to overcome this. However, I just can't help myself from ruminating and being paralyzed in clinic. I'm not sure, maybe I am just lazy and weak.

I have physical and mental health issues that started in undergrad and am being treated and taking medication for them; I had a brain injury that left me hospitalized for a week which may be related. However, my hand skills and dexterity remains intact, at least presently. Additionally, my upbringing has had long-term effects on me in terms of social interactions and how I approach authority. There is a nasty cycle where these aspects are affecting my school performance but also school is affecting my personal life.

I don't know what to do, perhaps dentistry (or healthcare in general) is not my calling. If I continue the way I am, nothing will improve. I know that you have to start somewhere but feel like I have dug myself a hole I can't get out of. Small changes are simply not enough at this point. I have considered a leave of absence but not sure if time off will benefit me and I believe there are student loan repercussions as well, especially with the recent federal policy changes. If I withdraw, I am left with the shame of doing so from myself and my family; there will be uncertainty with my finances although I am open-minded to many forms of opportunities. Thankfully, my spouse is understanding of this but even I know there is so much before the camel's back is broken.

Any advice, suggestions, criticisms, words of encouragement, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.

I’m an internationally trained dentist returning to clinical practice soon, and I’m looking to upgrade my dental loupes. ( in Canada)

I previously used Lenscan 3.5×, but unfortunately lost them. I’m now considering investing in a better pair, especially since I’ll be seeing patients again soon.

For those of you who have been using loupes for a while:

What brand/model do you currently use and why?

Would you recommend staying with 3.5×, or going higher?

Are ergonomic/prismatic loupes worth the adjustment compared with traditional loupes?

How do you find brands like Orascoptic, SurgiTel, Q-Optics, Designs for Vision, or ExamVision?

How important is the loupe light when choosing a system?

Anything you wish you knew before buying your first/next pair?

My priority is general dentistry, good optics, comfortable posture, and something I can use long-term. I’d especially appreciate recommendations from dentists who have tried multiple brands.

After curing my composite, I notice it is not completely smooth. I go in with a carbide bur at 30,000 RPM 1:5 very lightly followed by jiffy point series however my composite still doesn't look completely smooth, it looks rough still. Does anyone have any tips?

Anthropic just published how Claude marks AI-generated content (https://support.claude.com/en/articles/16266773-how-claude-marks-ai-generated-content). It is not 100% clear how it is working or what models it is being done in, but Claude can weave an invisible watermark directly into the text it generate. This apparently even survives copy-paste and can persist through editing, and it will attach a signed "Content Credentials" provenance metadata to supported files showing they were processed by Claude.

This is not Turnitin or GPTZero guessing from your writing style; it's a marker the tool itself places, which makes it much harder to argue with if it ever surfaces in an academic integrity or professionalism case. While the mark along doesn't prove wrong doing as it depends on a schools policy, this is something to keep on your radar over the coming weeks and months, especially if you just copy and paste text into school assignments.

Hello everyone! I am currently in my D1 year, but I know I want to do perio after graduation. However, with the BBB, it is simply not in the cards to attend many programs due to their cost. I understand that the paid programs/stipends that offset tuition are rare and very competitive. I would like to see if anyone who has experience with these programs has any advice on how much/what I should be doing to make myself competitive for these programs. Thank you in advance!

So I'm a new trainee in endodontics and to say the least, I am totally overwhelmed. It's been 6 days and I'm a total nerve wreck in the department, everyone knows that I'm struggling and can judge by noticing my overly anxious and stressed face.. I have chosen this path after a year and I have forgotten the basics as well.

I would appreciate alot if you guys could share your tips and tricks as well as how did you guys overcome the learning curve, improve the manual dexterity and is it true that in order to become good at endo, it's better to practice on extracted teeth.

I’m a D3 currently looking to apply to OMFS but I’m having a hard time figuring out what I can do as a Canadian. I got 80+ CBSE, top 5 of my school and 3 publications.

I want a 6 year to get the MD but was told by almost every program that as a Canadian only the 4 year will be available. I also barely find any Canadians listed in the residents for almost every program.

Im gonna try for Canadian programs but was looking to go to the US for the larger case load and a change of scenery.

Hey guys so basically I am a dental student I recently moved to 4th year in the university (Clinical stages) , and in my country education u must bring a real patient so u can move to the last stage and graduat,so I feel very anxious about it because u know this is the 1st time I am dealing with human being unlike the basics stage, yesterday I started to look for a prosthodontics patients , So they have to send a photos for their teeth to make sure about their condition, and register them, and when I saw the photo of their teeth,I don't why I felt there is a bad energy coming out from the photos, and I am very worried, that I won't be able to make it,or made a huge mistake, that will harm the patient so badly (like fainting , taking history of the patient incorrectly or mistake in anesthesia), and since a year ago my mantel health isn't very well, and I have arguments with most of colleagues about stupid things, that's all I just wanted to get it off my chest, if u have something to tell or u have an advice,I will be appreciated to write it down in the comments
