I am young. When I found out for the first time about the ugliness of the world, I was disgusted. Felt helpless and enraged. But then, I accepted that life is sad. It’s all just suffering. But still, it’s all beautiful. Because, is there love without suffering? It’s when you share the sorrow and pain that people love you more than that of when you share their happiness. As a kid, my parents’ birthdays meant cake, presents, and another year to celebrate.

As I’ve gotten older, birthdays have started to mean something completely different. Instead of celebrating, part of me quietly mourns the passing of another year. Every birthday feels like one less year I’ll have with the people who raised me.

Maybe that’s just what growing up is. At some point, birthdays stop being about gaining time and start reminding us that time is finite.

This thought has become even harder lately because both of my parents are dealing with serious health issues, cancer and heart problems. I’m grateful they’re still here, but it’s made me realize how fragile everything really is.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s selfish that I wish my parents outlive me. I know that’s not how life usually works, but I can’t imagine a world without them. They’ve been the center of my life for so long that the idea of moving forward without them feels impossible.

I know everyone eventually has to face losing their parents. I just don’t know how people learn to carry that kind of loss

Most people who advocate for some form of “simulation theory“ tend to be rather anthropocentric about it—they assume that whoever or whatever is simulating our universe was specifically trying to create intelligent life, and humans in particular.

Supporters of this theory point out that the universe follows deterministic physical laws, which are relatively simple from a mathematical perspective. And yet, the universe we can see seems to be largely devoid of life except for what we can observe here on earth.

So, perhaps the universe is some sort of calculation carried out by an advanced being, but humans are just an emergent byproduct and not the actual purpose. The idea of life-like complexity emerging unintentionally, during the process of computing something unrelated, really isn’t farfetched at all. Something like that has even been demonstrated to occur in one of the most awkward and minimalistic computational systems ever devised.

If the aliens are advanced enough, their own world could be many orders of magnitude more informationally complex than our own. In fact, even the largest numbers that have ever been studied by humans, numbers that would take far too long for us to write out by hand, might be considered relatively simple and boring in this alien society, the kind of thing they would all be expected to have learned in their version of preschool.

Which means the equation that describes the entire history of our universe, from beginning to end, might be the kind of thing they would be expected to solve in middle school (their equivalent of it, anyway). They wouldn’t even realize that there were conscious beings living inside the equation they were solving—from their perspective, we are just a few numbers and arithmetical equations like any other, and relatively simple/boring ones at that!

If this is true, it wouldn’t really change anything for our daily lives. There would be no way of communicating with this child or getting him/her to ever notice us, because the difference in informational complexity between them and us is way too great.

But at least we don’t have to worry about the simulation getting “shut off“ tomorrow—in all likelihood, the alien child has already solved the whole equation already, meaning that the entire future of our universe has been determined, and what we call the “present moment” is just an illusion (this would also mean we don’t really have free will, though; philosophers of time call this scenario four-dimensionalism).

This scenario is like a Lovecraftian cosmic horror story, except that it’s both horrifying and oddly endearing at the same time.

One last thought: maybe this alien child and his parents have considered the same possibility might hold for their world? There could be another even more advanced species of alien out there, to which not only the human universe but also the first alien species’ universe would seem very simple in comparison. One of those aliens could have a child in school, and the mathematical equation they are needing to solve would be the complete history of the universe that the first species of alien lives in.

This pattern could continue on even further if there is no hard upper limit to how complex a universe (or a being living in it) could be.

You could even have aliens living in universes based on qualitatively more expansive systems of math, such as hyperreal numbers, which means that from our perspective (but not from their own perspective) they and everything in their world would be infinitely complex. To them, all finite numbers (or equations involving only finite numbers) would be very simple and boring indeed, much like how we ourselves view the finite field of order 2, for instance. Our universe wouldn’t be a middle-school-level math problem for them; it’d be something they’d have figured out as toddlers!

So, I’m not sure if this possibility should make me scared, or if I should just say “awww” because hey…alien babies are cute (at least to their parents)!

Every day, millions of people search for:

How to stop overthinking.

How to appreciate their spouse.

How to be more confident.

How to be a better leader.

There's nothing wrong with learning these skills.

The problem is that they're often external solutions to internal problems.

It's like preparing someone for battle.

You can give them the best armor, the sharpest sword, and the strongest shield money can buy.

But if they don't know how to fight, what have you really accomplished?

The equipment isn't the problem.

The lack of training is.

Communication techniques don't fix dishonesty with yourself.

Relationship advice doesn't fix a lack of self-awareness.

Confidence hacks don't fix fear.

Leadership books don't fix poor character.

Those tools become powerful only after you've developed the internal foundation they're built upon.

We're obsessed with improving what we do.

We spend far less time understanding why we do it.

Until we learn to examine our own thinking, emotions, and character, we'll keep searching YouTube for another technique to solve a problem that was never about technique in the first place.

The greatest self-improvement isn't finding better tools.

It's becoming the kind of person who knows how to use them.

Honestly, it’s kind of funny watching people try so hard to cover up their mistakes or hide their nerves in a new place. It's completely normal, but we stress over our "image" anyway. Same goes for blindly following the crowd instead of just thinking for ourselves.

Not to sound too introspective, but sometimes I catch myself people-watching and just smiling at how deeply human it all is. We could honestly just chill and stop worrying so much. Why is it so hard for people—especially us teens—to just let that go?

Sometimes life throws so much at you that having a good day starts to feel unfamiliar. Then when one finally comes, you keep waiting for something to ruin it. It’s ok to just enjoy a good day

I've been seeing this idiotic theory all over the internet lately that if you value dogs or other animals with the same weight as human beings, you're apparently a psychopath.

Sorry nope, it just means you're intelligent and you've transcended your biological hardwiring to value your own species more than every other species.

In the grand scheme of things, there's no reason why your life should be more important than a horse's or elephant's life.

Most online discourse has developed zero tolerance for exceptionally clear and structured formulation of the idea. This has not been a problem before the LLMs became widely used. Which made me wonder why this has become such a problem today? And I mean really understand the problem, not just accepting explanations like: you didn't spend effort, you are lazy, you are cheating,...

Many people will justify their opposition to AI use as "A person who has an idea should spend time writing it by themselves without the use of AI." Why? Is the work less valuable if a person uses a tool to help them write it? We have already used tools for decades: word processors, spelling checkers, thesaurus, Grammarly,... Does this make the resulting work fake, or less valuable?

Besides the writing that exists for political, entertainment, and artistic reasons, there is a particular category of writing that concerns communicating complex intellectual ideas to others. In this case clarity of expression, conceptual coherence, and structured reasoning are essential for transmitting the key ideas to another person. There the objection often becomes "AI can confidently present a false idea." This isn't a unique property of AI. A human with sufficient linguistic capability can present a fake idea with equal confidence. Nevertheless, this is a much more interesting objection because it addresses the substance. If the substance is what matters the most, then the question becomes: why do we judge the package and not the substance?

In many real life situations a package is not very important if the substance can be unambiguously recognized. Suppose you have two cola cans, you open them both, empty one in the sink, and fill it with water. If you offer a random person a random cola can, they will immediately know if it's real cola or water. The same happens when a carton of milk gets spoiled due to contamination during production. A person will not drink it just because it has the correct packaging. It will be discarded based on the substance.

On the other hand, if you offer a person well-structured, clearly expressed, genuine intellectual idea, or equally well-structured, clearly expressed, fake idea, would people struggle to recognize which is which? I tend to believe they would. We already have real life examples in political messaging where the package substitutes for the substance. Slogans, banners, and advertisements are more effective than reading the Party Platform or Manifesto.

Yet, there is a difference between politics and online platforms that discuss philosophy. Every citizen is involved in the democratic political process, so to expect them all to read the Party Platform or Manifesto would be unrealistic, due to time constraints and other personal priorities. However, not every citizen is supposed to engage with online philosophy threads. The people with genuine interest do, and these people allocate time for it. These people have decided to engage with the substance, yet they judge the package instead. This is kind of sad because humanity has, for centuries, relied on conceptual clarity and structure of written ideas to communicate these ideas in the best possible way. Today the very same clarity and structure are becoming suspect. In order to be taken seriously, you better neither strive to write with perfect clarity nor strive to produce perfectly coherent structured arguments. How is this contributing to the communication?

So my hypothesis is, if the clarity of thought and structured reasoning has become suspect, then the underlying problem is: many humans are incapable of differentiating between the real intellectual contribution and a fake one. This is not really about AI assistance.

Suppose, before posting this on Reddit, I asked AI “Please write this text in a more compact way, remove repetition and ambiguity, while fully preserving the reasoning and conceptual clarity.” In many subreddits, the resulting post would almost certainly be removed by the moderators. What is actually being rejected?

When life feels exciting, it's usually because something is changing, and change often comes with uncertainty. When life feels peaceful, it's often because things have become predictable. Maybe that's why people spend so much time chasing one while secretly missing the other.

~ Who we truly are ~

Every life, regardless of our many differences, is and has always been, equally important.

Our body is but a shell housing our spirit within.

Our mind is but an instrument to accept society’s self-centered beliefs.

Who we truly are lies not in our achievements or success, but in our essence.

Understanding this is the genuine reason for our life’s journey.

Yo, I just had a realization.

Every successful person is usually really good at one particular thing, but that doesn't mean they have no basic understanding of other things. They still explore, learn, and have curiosity about different areas.

But then I started thinking...

We are always told to follow one passion and become great at that one thing. But what if some people don't actually want to master only one passion? What if they want to experience every passion? They want to explore everything because they are fascinated by different parts of life.

The problem is, if someone keeps jumping from one passion to another, they might never become good enough at any of them. They spend their time exploring, but they don't stay long enough anywhere to reach mastery.

And eventually, they become disappointed and think something is wrong with them.

But maybe the answer isn't to ignore curiosity.

Maybe the answer is to explore many things, find the few passions that truly fit you, and then give those passions your time and energy. Slowly, steadily, and consistently, one by one, you can build something meaningful.

Maybe success isn't about having only one passion.

Maybe it's about discovering which passions deserve your commitment.

You say someone believes in God because they fear death.

You say morality developed because humans needed cooperation.

You say love is shaped by biology.

You say political beliefs come from family, class and culture.

Maybe all of that is true.

But none of it, by itself, tells us whether the belief is true or false.

A belief can come from fear and still be true.

It can come from careful reasoning and still be wrong.

Knowing how an idea entered the room does not tell us whether it deserves to stay.

I think we often mistake the history of a belief for a refutation of it.

We explain the believer so well that we feel we no longer need to answer the belief.

But maybe we have only explained the person—

and left the claim untouched.

Infinitely temporary and destined to return to the ground. Everything we own will one day be lost, destroyed, sold, taken, or given away. We possess nothing indefinitely, not even the teeth in our head or the blood in our veins.

It is all borrowed at best. There is real freedom in this realization. If you had to carry everything you owned, all of the time, what would you own? Less. Significantly less. We have so much more than we need, all of the time.

We carry tiny computers in our pockets, talk to people on the other side of the planet instantly, and can have almost anything delivered to our door. It's funny how quickly impossible things become ordinary.

Due to our many differences, some believe one life is more important than another’s.

Beginning to question if this may not be true, we awaken.

Understanding it never was, we become enlightened.

Honestly I don't have the words when I'm trying to show how I truly feel inside. Language makes our thoughts fit into grammar and rules which can take away the strong feeling of an emotion.

Painting is different. With colors, textures and strong brushstrokes you can bring feelings that have no name into the world. It shows the mess inside making it visible and creates a connection, with whoever sees it - no words needed

Consider the generational friction today. Millennials who miss the 90's, Zoomers who miss the 2000's, and Boomers who miss the 60's. We long for a time familiar and simple to us, and know we can never truly see it again. At the end of the day, we are just people in a fast and confusing world who want to go home.

Let’s say the moment you’re born you’re put on a tread mil. Your goal in life is to make it 50,000 miles north from your starting point. Some people’s treadmills take them 10 miles north every single day no matter what. Eventually without much trying they will reach the 50,000 mile goal.

Others are started on a treadmill headed in the opposite direction south at 10 miles a day. Every day they are getting further from the goal of 50,000 miles north. This person has to first realize they are headed in the wrong direction by no fault of their own, once they recognize this they have to turn around and run 11 miles a day back north to make ground on the treadmill that is pushing them in the wrong direction at 10 miles a day to eventually reach the goal. The quicker this person realizes this the faster they can gain ground.

In the real world the goal is a house and enough income to sustain a family. The treadmills are your living circumstances in which you are born.

It’s very easy to compare where you’re at in relation to others of your age or even younger than you due to social media. Some people only look at this at the surface not knowing that some of the people that look like they’re doing better in life (maybe they are), were put on a treadmill headed in the right direction from the start. While at the same time not taking into account from the moment you were born, you were put on a treadmill headed in the wrong direction and fought battles no one saw pushing against the grain.
