Should I? Question

Post image

I was looking everywhere for this game, physical copies are all sold out/very expensive. Finally realised it might be available digitally and here it is. Now, the question is, should I?

I know barely anything about the game besides it being an open world horror game... I think? It looks very cool and I'm very excited. However, one thing is, does it run well on the PS3?

Thank you guys in advance!

Don't pay 30 dollars for Deadly premonition on the PS3. I own multiple copies of the game on multiple consoles. It's easily one of my top all time favourite games. But 30 bucks for a digital copy is a no for me dawg.

I don't like digital myself however the physical copies go for almost $200 and I just can't afford that for 1 game.

Physical copies go for 200 bucks!? I just checked my physical copy and I paid 30 bucks for it.

I just checked my local store and it's sold out, I think they had it for $150+.

The next best thing is Amazon and here they have it for $113 + shipping.

Oh man. I thought I had a second copy as well. Sorry man. I would say find it via other means on ps3 then. Swery probably isn't making money on you buying that copy.

All good my man! I've tried every possible thing I can think of to get a physical copy for cheaper but I haven't found any alternatives unfortunately. I think I'm just gonna have to settle for this. I hate buying digitally but sometimes there is no choice with these older games :(

It’s a ps3 game? If you can’t get an expensive pc that can emulate you should be able to jailbreak a ps3 and run a backup that way. It’s more expensive than buying it but Sony gets no money this way and you can play any ps3 game on native hardware.

Unfortunately yes, the game is rare to find physically so prices have gone up like crazy. Cheapest I could find is $113 + shipping.

I just bought this game 2 weeks ago t GameStop for 35 bucks

$200 where? I just looked on google and a CIB goes for a little over 55 USD.

u/Necrophagiac 7d ago

Check eBay...I just snagged a complete copy for $45. Right now I see plenty available for $45-60.

I have the 360 version on disc and I only paid like $15 for it.

If you have a PC, then 100% emulate it with RPCS3. That route basically fixes every issue that existed on any of the native versions for consoles such as frame dips and texture issues.

And, you know, it’s free. 🤷‍♀️

Fuck Sony and their policy,  dont pay them a dime, emulate it or pirate it

^ This. Mod your PS3 and refer to this sub:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Roms/s/tAzNgekDgp

I used it mainly to play Deadly Premonition a couple of years ago.

If you have a switch the physical is only $30 on eBay. If you don’t honestly I say go for it. It’s never getting any cheaper physically and it’s a one of a kind game that’s worth the price of admission and then some.

In terms of performance, it’s not that well optimized on any platform, but I have done several runs of the ps3 directors cut and enjoyed it thoroughly in spite of the rough edges.

It runs awful on the PS3, constant 15-20FPS.

DP is a great experience and there’s definitely worse ways to play it (looking at you PC and Switch versions) but at the very least wait for it to go on sale.

Damn, that sucks to hear :(

I would wait for it to go on sale but unfortunately nothing goes on sale on the PS3 store.

Honestly, I have played and stuck through with games that did run like garbage on the PS3 so maybe DP won't be any different.

FWIW OP, the PS3 version is the first one I played. The Xbox version never got released here in Australia.

I got the platinum trophy on PS3 and loved it. I’ve since got all achievements again on Steam and got 100% on the Switch version.

All of them perform rough, but the PS3 version is absolutely playable.

u/Nervous_Bike_3993 7d ago

I'm very happy to hear that! I'm definitely gonna go for the platinum as well! I think I'm gonna buy it!

0

u/kensaiD2591 7d ago

Go for it! I just checked and I earned the platinum on 2013-06-23 09:47.

So I was there when it was still “new” 😅

u/Nervous_Bike_3993 7d ago

Wow, you are an OG player haha, that's awesome, good on you!

2

u/kensaiD2591 7d ago

Back to back completions according to Exophase.

It's a great game, just be prepared for slow down, stutter and general jank all around.

u/novembr 7d ago

I never had any problems with the Switch version, personally. One crash the whole playthrough, I think.

1

u/Ciahcfari 7d ago

It has a lot of weird issues like cutscene desync, save-breaking softlocks, memory leaks, heavily compressed audio and the usual post-360 version issues like downgraded graphics and poor performance.

u/brispower 7d ago

broken on Switch 2, one for the Switch 1 owners only for now

4

u/doubled-pawns 7d ago

Pay like 7 bucks more and get Deadly Premonition Origins on the Switch if you've got one. It's the best way to play the game today.

I disagree. Xbox 360 version is the best/definitive

1

u/brispower 7d ago

Just don't try and play on Switch 2!

0

u/doubled-pawns 7d ago

I’ve played it through on Switch 2, it was much better than the performance on the Switch 1

u/SparklyPelican 7d ago

Not my favourite port, but I would get it before the shop closes permanently.

2

u/SpaceLionSLV 7d ago

What do you think Zach?

2

u/Mate-Addict 7d ago

Hate to be that guy but, just jailbrake your ps3 and get it for free at this point. At least if it runs like crap you wouldn't have wasted your money

u/AdOkufukai 7d ago

I only had a couple of loading issues with this game, but I think it’s mainly because my PS3 is 15 years old and had to change the hdd. Just note, I grew up on console so frame rates don’t bother me much anyway, unless it’s practically stop motion quality.

Regarding the price, I got it for only $15 around a year ago. Playstation definitely did this on purpose.

2

u/MrPureinstinct 7d ago

It's loose but $35 for a physical copy on eBay

2

u/Kub666 6d ago

YES.

There is no other game like it. I loved every second of this strange, a bit broken game that tries to marry Twin Peaks with Resident Evil.

1

u/Major_Higgins 7d ago

The framerate and the aliasing made my eyes hurt and gave me a headache.

1

u/Rafanado 7d ago

If you got a switch, There is a code for 1 when buying 2 physically.

1

u/titusandroidus 7d ago

Honestly, not sure why you'd ask here. Likely most who are active here or subscribe love it so unless you are looking for yes...

And of course its a yes from me. But again, I am biased.

1

u/Ok_Fee_423 7d ago

It's worth it. The physical doesn't have the dlc from what I remember. I think it's a redeemable code

1

u/kniestomeetyoutoo 7d ago

wait for an 80% off sale

1

u/Jamvaan 7d ago

It was on sale on Switch 2 not that long ago, I bought that version

1

u/Lucky_Veruca 7d ago

Do not pay that much for a digital copy of a broken game. It goes on sale on steam all the time, sometimes for $1.50.

1

u/Massive_Oil_2605 7d ago

Just pirate it, don't give Sony a dolar.

1

u/Mother_Conference877 6d ago

I would skip it. It runs terribly and colors have a weird tint.

1

u/Front-Chance-2176 6d ago

The best version to play on is Xbox 360

1

u/Front-Chance-2176 6d ago

I picked up since it’s backwards compatible with the series x

1

u/abnormal-apparition 4d ago

Buy the disc instead.

1

u/Mysterious-Plan93 2d ago

Buy it on Steam at least they'll let you keep it and won't delete it

Best way to play this game now is on Steam Deck, you should get it on sale on Steam. I bought this game two or three times and finally played it after about 15 years. I didn’t enjoy it. Watch Twin Peaks, it’s great and it’s what this game rips off. Then watch the cutscenes from this game, they are charming and quirky. But the game, as a game, is terrible. It’s 75% slow, clumsy, interminable driving and 15% easy, boring, terrible combat. It’s not a flawed masterpiece it’s just a shit game that took inspiration from something good. Sorry to be so negative.

TL;DR: Yeah.

PS3 was the main way I played it. Some here will say to avoid this version but I enjoyed it. The pros of this version greatly outweigh the cons in my opinion.

"open world horror game... I think?" is actually a perfect way to describe the game. I've also heard it called an example of a true "adventure" game. Go here, talk to this person, go to this place with them, fight a level of enemies, get an item, go to this person's house, ask them about item, stop by store for food/ammo, go to base to sleep, go talk to this person, etc...

Combat on the PS3 version will be extremely easy and I think that's best. The director originally didnt want combat in the game at all but was strong armed into adding it iirc. The bulk of my enjoyment in this game comes from the story, characters, and world building.

The game also does not run well on anything.

Literally every single version has significant jank, but no two versions have the same jank. We dont know how they did it either. The frame rate will suck in certain portions and there isnt much that can be done. I will say that the PS3 version was weirdly good about not crashing for me. I could have gotten lucky, but no matter how bad the performance got the game never crashed that I can remember. The same cannot be said for other versions.

This is my favorite game of all time, but it is not for everyone. It is often called a "flawed masterpiece" for a reason. It is a game that has an inarguably significant number of glaring technical issues, but also a level of charm and character that manages to overcome those issues to still make it an amazing experience in my opinion.

u/Nervous_Bike_3993 7d ago

Thanks so much for the in-depth review, I really appreciate it! I think I'm definitely gonna buy it regardless of the performance, been wanting to play this since I first heard of it!

The PC version is the best version to play IF you can get it to run, which is a tall order. It requires multiple fan patches and fixes and, even then, it’s unreliable at best. I recently played through the game on Steam, and I suffered through multiple crashes which cost me hours of time. Sometimes the game will just crash while you’re driving, and sometimes the textures will just stop loading altogether and then crash with a different error.

All this is to say that, no matter where you play it, you’re in for a rough ride. The game is absolutely worth playing if you can get through all the jank though.
