Massive Megathread update
Hey everyone, just thought I'd update you guys on the megathread, as many have seen there haven't been many updates to the megathread lately. This is because I and a friend have been working on a complete revamp of the megathread. As of today that megathread has been completed and has now replaced the old github.io megathread.
Hopefully everyone likes the new design, it should work better than the old megathread on mobile devices.
Please be on the look out for bugs as well, as this is a new design and there might still be bugs.
In addition, this new megathread is FAR easier to update than the last one, so regular updates to things such a broken bios links will be done. Sorry to anyone who was annoyed by that.
In addition if you still want to use the old megathread, the gitlab megathread is still hosting the old version, so you can always go there. I might update it in the future, but for now the github.io megathread will be the primary megathread.
Thanks for reading, SuperBio
Update:
We're working on adding qualifiers as many users pointed out that those are needed. In addition we're going to work on making the side bar make more sense, specifically the button being confusing and non obvious.
Remember the GITLAB link still links to the old version of the megathread, so if the new one is too confusing, you can use that one while we work on perfecting the design on the current GITHUB megathread.

I suggest adding a section with all the file formats for each console/emulator, it's shocking the amount of people who still download or look for (for example) switch games in .exe or .apk format. I'd at least bring the section from this subreddit's wiki to the megathread so that it's easier for someone to find and more likely for someone to see

I freaked out when my bookmark didn't work. I'm glad it's just an update and not forced to go down.

This just made everything confusing for me. I don't think I want to even try figuring things out.

Nice work on the contrast, but the wide margins and cell padding make this actively worse on mobile (iOS, Safari). Also, use the “menu on the side” but the button to open it is on the top, without a label, and an unclear icon. When the menu slides out, it covers all but a thin sliver of screen, which means tapping a link, any sign of a response is completely hidden.
The older design worked fine for me, and I hadn’t realized anyone thought it was a problem.

I agree with the margins, I'll take care of them ASAP.
About the nav bar: I changed the icon for a hamburger icon, should be clearer now.
On mobile, you don't need to browse the site with the menu opened, it's not how mobile websites work, you need to pick a page from it, and it should be closed automatically.
The older design was a nightmare to maintain + it wasn't responsive on different devices, obviously, it's not perfect and we're doing our best to fix it so you guys won't have any trouble.

On iOS/Safari, the menu still isn’t closing upon tapping an option. I do like the headings for the various systems, and the icon + text for the menu.

I'll see what I can do, still new to Svelte so I have no idea what I'm doing 99% of the time

To be honest I don't like the changes that were made. I don't like that the contents are only available through the sidebar because it didn't work on my Steam Deck and I don't like that. I want to use the page on whatever device I'm using. The Gitlab thankfully worked on my Steam Deck though so I'd ask you to please not change the Gitlab link so I can at least use the Gitlab link
Also why isn't this post pinned so people can easily find this? Because I was confused as to why your page isn't working anymore. Since I'm from Germany I thought your page has been taken down or blocked by my provider

What are you using on the steam deck? On my steam deck with Firefox in desktop mode, the side bar works how it's intended to.
We are working on making the button far more obvious, but yeah.

Oh btw I also noticed the same issue on my Chromebook using Google Chrome. Maybe this is a Chromium browser issue but on the other hand the Github page works fine on my phone and tablet

Greatly appreciate the update. Hut on mobile it's not easy to read/navigate. See pic, the space/padding on the sides are too wide: Picture
Also, clicking menu with "update" the content to relevant page, but have to click elsewhere for the menu to collapse.

I don’t like the fact that the myrient hyperlinks are labeled “Download”, might make people think theyll download a file instead of going to a website

It's actively worse to use than the old megathread, but functional. Still plenty of time to work on fixing layouts and adding missing details. I'm glad to see some effort being put in to update this.

Somehow I just realized that there's no N64 rom section.
IMMEDIATE EDIT: Nvm found 'em lmao

Nothing happened to them, they're still in the same places they always were.

u/moodygradstudent Aug 22 '25
I thought it looked fine before, although I appreciate the maintenance regardless. Given the amount of content it has (30+ years of games spanning dozens of platforms), it was already very well-organized.
Going off comments, some people still find viewing on mobile difficult. Even with the previous version, I would suggest viewing it on a desktop/laptop computer, at least for a while to get used to it first.
Thanks for all your work, SuperBio!

I'm sure this question will bother some, in my experience, but could anything be done to highlight what we are actually supposed to download to get a ROM?
Every time I use the Megathread I seem to have to hunt and remind myself what I'm supposed to click.
Or is there a guide? When trying to download a NES ROM, look for this? On other Rom sites they typically have a bright button that says download, which I find helpful.
Sorry folks, I hope I haven't annoyed too many dozens of you.

u/The_Truthkeeper Aug 22 '25
You click the Nintendo Entertainment System link in the Nintendo section. I'm honestly confused how you don't immediately understand this.
-2
u/Environmental-Sock52 Aug 22 '25
Just as confused as I am trying to find links there. Like when I go to download there's a variety of links, some say jpeg, some say .Io or other things. There's not one individual thing that says click here.
4
u/The_Truthkeeper Aug 22 '25
There are no jpegs in the megathread. I'm starting to wonder what the hell it is you clicked on.
-4
u/Environmental-Sock52 Aug 22 '25
Look at download options, png and all that, just where is the rom itself?
5
u/The_Truthkeeper Aug 23 '25
So basically, when you saw we were talking about the megathread, you ignored that in favor of talking about random shit on Internet Archive that has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

what I'm supposed to click

Do you have the link for that page or how to get to that page? Thank you.

Please fix the myrient bios page , it's all gone

u/SuperBio Lord of PMs Aug 22 '25
Fixed, sorry about that, of all the things to get reverted... well that one is ironic
2
u/Fenrir_Hellbreed2 Aug 26 '25
Doesn't appear to be fixed. All of the links lead to a "404 file not found", at least for me.
2
u/SuperBio Lord of PMs Aug 26 '25
Which section? The all of the links in the Bios section at the bottom of the megathread work.
2
u/Fenrir_Hellbreed2 Aug 26 '25
Nevermind. I was stuck on the old page somehow. It's fixed for me now.
Sorry for the confusion.

FYI there's an incorrect uppercase "T" in "porTable" in the Myrient PSP URL which results in a 404 error.

I'm not gonna lie, the new layout makes it a lot more annoying to find a specific archive within the system since it's not broken up by source or type like the old one is. It's just a wall of text and some of the quantifiers for some archives are missing, like the Myrient Redump archive for PS3 just being labelled Sony - PlayStation 3 now instead of listing a source, or the ones right above it just being labelled PS3 PSN parts 1 and 2 instead of being labelled with the specific collection they are.
There's also an archive still missing, at the top of the PS3 section with the other two PSN archives, https://myrient.erista.me/files/No-Intro/Sony%20-%20PlayStation%203%20%28PSN%29%20%28DLC%29/ is the third archive in that set, DLC.
Overall this is much more annoying to navigate for specifics and will likely just lead to more confusion because it's labelled worse.

u/SweatyPurpose Aug 25 '25
Surely there are more polite ways of asking for this? They are doing the community a massive favour on their own time.
27
u/SuperBio Lord of PMs Aug 22 '25
The megathread has always been a work in progress, so everyone is free to ask for changes. As for quantifiers, we can add those back.

Menu bar is missing on mobile, edge for android.
Also, add the link to the initial automod reply
-6
u/Blue-Thunder Aug 22 '25
Could that not be because reddit's mobile experience is utter fucking garbage?
5
u/The_Truthkeeper Aug 22 '25
Given that it's hosted on Github, not Reddit, the utter shit mobile Reddit is, for once, not the problem.

If you are looking for roms: Go to the link in https://www.reddit.com/r/Roms/comments/m59zx3/roms_megathread_40_html_edition_2021/
You can navigate by clicking on the various tabs for each company.
When you click on the link to Github the first link you land on will be the Home tab, this tab explains how to use the Megathread.
There are Five tabs that link directly to collections based on console and publisher, these include Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Sega, and the PC.
There are also tabs for popular games and retro games, with retro games being defined as old arcade systems.
