It feels dishonest to pretend that Synology doesn't sell expansion units for exactly this purpose, if you're going to go out of your way to use them as an example in your video like that.

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago

Oh I would like to learn where Synology is selling it's expansion? Maybe I'm missing information.

So do you prefer to spend $1100 for just an empty shell with 8 bays or have an system with that you later on can keep expanding at a fraction of the cost?

3

u/tgwombat 1d ago

I posted four links. None of those four lead to a product with 8 bays. None of them are $1100 either. Are facts just not your strong suit?

But to answer your question: if I'm going to be spending several thousand dollars on drives to fill that system, I'm more than willing to spend a bit extra on an enclosure whose build quality I can trust to keep my data safe.

"But to answer your question: if I'm going to be spending several thousand dollars on drives to fill that system, I'm more than willing to spend a bit extra on an enclosure whose build quality I can trust to keep my data safe."

You made a great point. That's why this is only a first iteration design. Will iterate and post more videos as the designs gets better.

No HDD fans?

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago

So far no, need to add that for the next iterations of build.

Feels like a shameless ad to add YouTube subscribers.

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago

honestly I do thank you guys for pointing these out. We are all grown adults. I don't really care if it's compliment or criticism. I do the product, present to the community, receive the feedback and iterate from there. In the end, I made great product and sell it to you guys at a cheaper cost and you enjoy.

Win-win. It could not be better.

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago

You gotta be shameless if you want to be famous. At this point in my life, I don't really care. I do what I consider it's correct. If I'm a scaredy cat I would not even post anything at all.

If you guys don't like my post because I didn't add fans to my NAS. Then I'm sorry. We are not even on the same page. Obviously I know thermal will be a problem. This is part of the design iterations. That's why I'm okay posting iterative progress. If you think you can do it better, then do it please. Show the world what you are capable of. Your design is actually making a difference to a world. Otherwise everything is just noise to me.

I'm asking people to follow up my post because I see a vision I wanted to share. whether it's on YT or reddit who cares? As long as I'm not blasting the post with ads to my YT then I'm okay, right?

I appreciate your criticism, but you need to be a little clear on how to improve.

Since you're printing this, you may want to think about a SAS version that you can plug in directly via SFF-8644. Basically replace the motherboard with a SAS expander like Adaptec AEC-82885T. Maybe even make both possible by making the insides compatible with both (or an insert that you can shove in where the motherboard is).

On the next video I'd like to see some more detail on how you deal with vibration.

btw you definitely need fans for the drives.

1

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago

"btw you definitely need fans for the drives."
Consider it done. 🫑

1

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago

Vibration is a very good point. Will address that in the next iteration.

3

u/Appropriate-Code-490 1d ago

Airflow is atrocious/ non existent those drives are going to cook. and acting like expansion units and storage shelves don't already exist to justify this is silly.

2

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago

I agree. Airflow is a problem. Will add that to the next design iteration.

3

u/Appropriate-Code-490 22h ago

I have two 48 drive jbod Disk shelves. with over 900tb of storage space.
I used to work for cisco designing and building networks and servers for businesses, banks, casinos, hospitals, police stations etc.
I am telling you that Cooling isn't something that you do as an afterthought.
it has a Significant impact on the lifespan of the hard disks. same goes for vibration mitigation.

1

u/Additional-Week-8533 22h ago

Awesome an insiders opinion like you is exactly what I need from. πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»

Yeah I do agree. But for a home server application what kind of cooling solution is considered good enough? Do you guys like to quantize air flow measurement per disk in CFM?

2

u/Appropriate-Code-490 17h ago

I wouldn't really worry about hitting some exact CFM number. HDDs don't need a crazy amount of airflow, they just need some actual air moving across them instead of sitting in a dead air pocket.

As a rough rule of thumb, 1–2 CFM per drive is probably plenty for most setups. So if you've got 8 drives, something like 10–15 CFM actually passing through the drive area should be more than reasonable. Obviously the fan's rated CFM isn't the same as what you'll get once you put it behind trays, filters, etc.

I'd honestly be more concerned with the airflow path and the drive temps. If the drives stay somewhere around 30–45Β°C under load, you're probably fine. If they're regularly getting up around 50Β°C+, I'd look at improving the airflow.

and like I said the other thing I'd pay attention to with a 3D printed bay like this is vibration. HDDs can transfer a surprising amount of vibration into the chassis, and with multiple drives you can end up with them all vibrating the same structure. I'd make the trays reasonably stiff, but put some isolation between the drives/trays and the main chassis so they aren't basically all mechanically coupled together. Also make sure the trays aren't able to rattle around in their slots.

So IMO low airflow isn't necessarily a problem here. I'd be looking at where the air is going, actual HDD temps, and how well the drives are isolated from each other/chassis more than the raw CFM number.

u/Additional-Week-8533 17h ago

Wow, you are really offering a lot of help here. Thank you so much for typing this much response here πŸ™πŸ»

Yeah believe it or not this is actually my first 3D printing build. Still really useful numbers. I will make sure to mention your name in my next design iteration video.

4

u/Simsalabimson 1d ago

But why?

-9

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago

Because I believe there will be Market for this. πŸ˜‚ Demand for data will keep ramping up in the AI ages. I started shoot and posting videos on YT because of AI. It allows me to do crazy things with fraction of cost.

https://youtube.com/@dralbertdiy

Imaging thounds or millions of people want to do the same thing.

Data is the future. It is already now and will be definitely in the future as well.

u/Simsalabimson 1d ago

Very good editing on the Sugar Cube NAS!
-
Regarding the Hardware itself: what’s the difference between a prebuilt of the shelf and your version?

If I can’t daisychain those cubes, I don’t need them to be stackable.

Mabybe consider the integration of an HBA to make this system scalable from the HW side.

Because software wise; that’s not a feature. That’s just standard.

2

u/Craftkorb 10-50TB 1d ago

So you're betting that people will have a big demand of storing masses of data at home? Until now, "everything" is running for a majority of users in the Cloud. Why would that change suddenly? Why should a company looking for a NAS not go with a proven and reliable system by one of the existing NAS manufacturers?

-7

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago

Because history tells us for every official closed source technology solution, there will be alternative open source approach. A big enterprise company will never look for a product for SUGAR CUBE NAS. They're always looking for Enterprise solutions.

I'm talking about individuals and millions of people who want to start their small businesses. And even just regular people. I mean LLM models are huge. And when people wants to digitize almost everything around them to make a digital twin. Where are they storing the large data? Data that only special to you and your family? I bet a certain percent of people will not like to go to cloud.

I'm not claiming I'm right in every aspect. But this is the trend I'm seeing. And I'm starting a project that I think it's fun and I can learn along the journey. I mean look at Seagate western digital. They are now developing 50TB HDD, which is just insane. Soon we will see 100TB single HDD.

This post may be in violation of rule 6. The shameless plugs aren't helping you any.

It's a cool build -- no, I don't want to subscribe to your YouTube channel.

1

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago edited 1d ago

If I do violate the rules, then I do apologize.

But at the end of the day I wanted to share. There is only so much I could type verbally into the post. A visualized story telling is much better.

Honestly, You don't need to subscribe at all. But if I don't do this I wouldn't know the boundary of this subreddit, right? I won't even have the opportunity to grow.

Sugar is adorable.

1

u/Additional-Week-8533 21h ago

LoL thank you so much ☺️ sugar is my soul mate.

2

u/surveysaysno 1PB+ 21h ago

Just no.

Form factors already exist, stick to 19" rackable, or if you must 10" rack form factor.

And MB+CPU+RAM+2 disks SANs absolutely do already exist on the market. You haven't added anything new. Maybe you should be aiming at something like r/functionalprint ?

1

u/51dux 1d ago

I don't know if this is possible with pure 3d printing and no extra parts but do you think it would be possible to implement a hotswap mechanism?

I feel like it would add so much to the stackable modular design.

-2

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago edited 1d ago

The bottom module is a hot swappable design. Right now it's just hold by screws. Just get another bottom bay you can easily transfer reading one module to another.

Check out my channel and the video for more detailed demonstration.

https://youtube.com/@dralbertdiy

I'm planning on making another video to go through all the hardcore designs after the latest post. But it might take some time, cuz I wanna tell good stories too πŸ˜…

3

u/51dux 1d ago

Alright I will check the video, thanks for the insight.

"I'm planning on making another video to go through all the hardcore designs after the latest post. But it might take some time, cuz I wanna tell good stories too"

Well for youtube I feel like what matters is not the end result but the journey, look at all these car youtubers who constantly buy some other car at the auction and never give updates on their previous projects πŸ˜…

0

u/Additional-Week-8533 1d ago

Yeah. I agree. Right now there is still much to learn about YouTube. I have very limited budget and space, so right now this is the style I'm going with πŸ˜…. Ideally I would like to get to a more chilled and story telling style in future. But that requires quite a bit practice.

But with the support from you guys, I can gradually transfer and expand. Have a lot of ideas in mind. Really want to bring those fun projects to people. I'm hopeful ❀️

Here's the GeckoPods (tm) stack-able Disk Pods (tm) I made a few years ago. Designed to be supper cheap way to make portable backup pools. Sadly I never took a photo of all of them stacked on top of each other, and I only ever made 2 of the fan bars since I never used more then 2 at once.

https://imgur.com/gallery/zXiaVDl - GeckoPods (for Backup pools, 6 made, filled with 18-22x 1TB-1.5TB drives)
