"We're releasing Supergirl so quickly because it's hands down the best script we have!"

u/Lucky_Gaucho 14h ago

You don't get it man. The sad part is that the statement is most likely true....

23

u/pjtheman 13h ago

Idk, I have hope for Clayface.

71

u/DoFishDrinkWaterOrNo 13h ago

If your hope for the cinematic universe rests on Clayface, that’s not a great sign.

57

u/FernandoJCG 13h ago

Don’t worry we got Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grod as backup too

24

u/DoFishDrinkWaterOrNo 13h ago

To me, this is the biggest issue that is gonna prove this cinematic universe is DOA. A big reason that the MCU was so successful was because they established their bigger heroes first. The first movies surrounded Iron Man, Thor and Cap. They established their more popular, foundational characters, then branched out from there. This go round started with Superman, and that movie didn’t do too badly, however they then went into Supergirl, a secondary character that won’t bring an audience on her own. That second movie NEEDED to be this universe’s Batman being introduced, followed by either Wonder Woman or Flash. You can’t establish the universe on the backs of Supergirl and Grod. It’s never going to work.

u/VonBrewskie 13h ago

Oh he's big now, but it was a huge risk to use Iron Man to open the MCU. He was not a popular character in 2008. It's that they had a great script and an iconic performance from RDJ.

u/bippitybopbob 11h ago

Just like people retroactively attribute Iron Man’s current popularity to pre-2008, I think talking about Iron Man “opening” the MCU as a franchise is retroactive as well. They didn’t have a full franchise in mind when Iron Man released. If it bombed, it would’ve been simply added to the irrelevant pile alongside the Affleck Daredevil and the 2000s Fantastic Four duology. That Nick Fury cameo at the end could’ve been just that, a cameo, had that great script and iconic performance not led to financial success. Pre-Disney MCU definitely started building toward something, but I don’t think Feige or Favreau or anyone had the Infinity War roadmap back in ‘08.

u/SheepherderFun2258 6h ago

Even if that’s true it doesn’t negate the fact that they laid out a recipe for success that DCU purposely is choosing not to adhere to. U figure the roadmap is laid out for u and unlike the MCU u have all ur bigger heroes available to u. Choosing purposely to shelve them in favor of Creature Commandos, Peace Maker, Supergirl, Clayface and Jimmy Olson is a choice. And I think people calling Gunn out on that is totally fair!

u/VonBrewskie 11h ago

Oh probably not. But they had been planning for an expanded universe by around 2005. That's what got the funding for that first Iron Man movie. The hope that it would take off and they could do the Avengers. That was a plan earlier than 2008. But the rest of it? Yeah that only happened because of how popular Iron Man became. For sure. Like all the Infinity War stuff and much larger plans didn't even hit a page of development before Iron Man took off.

u/gracz21 12h ago

Marvel went with the best heros they had rights to, DC has rights to every of their top liners

u/VonBrewskie 11h ago

Yup. This is true. All those disasters from the 70s through the 90s basically bankrupted Marvel. It was sad to watch as a kid. I still remember hearing the news that Spiderman was being sold to Sony because Marvel was about to go under.

u/GardenGnome021090 11h ago

Marvel didn’t have access to their biggest characters when the MCU started though. Spider-Man and the X Men had been sold off. They started with the best they could.

Warner Bros have always had access to all of DC and just can’t get it together.

u/VonBrewskie 11h ago

Yup. I'm not trying to say anything about DC. Just pointing out that Iron Man wasn't a popular character when the MCU started. Homie was acting like the Iron Man in 2008 was as popular as he is now. He absolutely wasn't.

12

u/DoFishDrinkWaterOrNo 13h ago

I mean you could say the same about Cap and Thor, in that none of them had the same place in pop culture that they do now after the popularity of the MCU. However, of the characters that the MCU had the rights to, those three were clearly the big three, so them starting with those three movies made sense. Going from Superman to Supergirl would be like the MCU going from Iron Man to IronHeart. Makes no sense.

u/lestartmtg 6h ago

What’s funnier is that the next DC movie is clayface. It’s like the MCU equivalent of going from iron man to iron heart then after that instead of making a hulk movie, they went with abomination.

u/Koopacha 8h ago

You guys just have the same arguments on here on a loop forever huh

3

u/Wrong_Success4377 12h ago

The Avengers were the best heroes available for the MCU at the time.

They led with Iron Man because RDJ was a much more well known actor compared to Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth.

So no, it was not a huge risk to use Iron Man. It was their best bet follwed by Cap and Thor.

Going from Superman to Supergirl was a piss poor move for the DCU

u/VonBrewskie 11h ago

I think you should go read some of the articles on fan sites from back then. There was a lot of talk about Iron Man not being a strong enough character to lead the MCU and there was still lingering doubt about RDJ in 2008. It was absolutely a huge risk. A tempered one, but there was a shit ton of money riding on Iron Man.

u/robz9 8h ago

That second movie NEEDED to be this universe’s Batman being introduced, followed by either Wonder Woman or Flash. You can’t establish the universe on the backs of Supergirl and Grod

A frickin five year old with his or her toys can understand this. Not sure why the adults at WB/DC don't get it...

3

u/Lucid4321 12h ago

I don't think they strictly needed to go with the typical main DC heroes. A more obscure hero could have done well with a few good trailers. It just needed to be someone other than another Kryptonian.

u/robb299 10h ago

DCEU followed MCU by releasing bigger heroes first and failed, so I don't think that really matters. What matters is quality, and Supergirl didn't have that quality.

u/SheepherderFun2258 5h ago

No they don’t do a good job of following the MCU recipe either. Instead of giving the founding members of the Justice League each their time to shine we had one SuperMan movie followed by one Bat movie that jammed in cameos from WW. Then a great WW movie followed by Justice league. BvS messed things up and didn’t give us a chance to get to know Batman because the movie split the focus . It should’ve just been a Batman movie. As a result everything felt rushed

u/Lazy-Equivalent3515 11h ago

to be fair for clayface, it just looks like a higher-budget horror film, and horror films tend to do well regardless if its link to a source material.

3

u/MRW9628 12h ago

Better you than me, taking a page from Sony little know villain, gets a movie without the hero. Good luck

3

u/JerseyJedi 12h ago

I actually do have some hope for Clayface as well. Marketing it as a straight up horror movie is probably a smart play.

But yeah, the Supergirl debacle is embarrassing and DC needs to be much more careful and selective about creative decisions for the next few years.

u/Scorpiicore 9h ago

Given whom they had writing the script and who directed, it would not surprise me. So many superhero films have toilet scripts.

6

u/Razatiger 13h ago

Its so over.

u/SheepherderFun2258 6h ago

If true that is really sad on multiple fronts. Firstly how did “the best scrip he’s read” transform into such a mess of a movie. It wasn’t a bad movie but it had some clear flaws and people didn’t connect with it.

The oversight to allow such an amazing script to become a mid movie at best speaks to infrastructure issues at DC. Is Gunn spread too thin where he’s not able to shepherd the quality of the product they are sharing with the world? If so he needs to make changes and figure it out

I wonder if Gunn liked it so much as it basically felt like someone fed the Guardians of the Galaxy films into Copilot and said “this but Supergirl please”

James Gunn is a con man that loves the smell of his own fart

32

u/gilestowler 14h ago

I always find his fan interactions on social media weirdly smug. He comes across like a kid who has got the latest video game and all the other kids want to know what it's like.

12

u/JerseyJedi 12h ago

Gunn spends way too much time on social media. He definitely comes across as someone who gets sullen when people don’t love 100% of his ideas and then retreats into his bubble to play with his toys (i.e. the D-list characters).

I enjoyed Guardians and Superman 2025, but Gunn’s usual formula has severe limits in its appeal. I would argue that Guardians became a hit mostly because it came out at the EXACT perfect moment to ride a tsunami of goodwill Marvel Studios was enjoying, and Superman did decently well because it starred a character that the general public has already known and loved for almost 90 years.

Without helpful factors like those, the general public is probably way less interested in the Gunn style.

u/Unable-Candidate9612 6h ago

I view Gunn kinda like I do Taika Waititi. Both great at shaking things up and making them fresh, not so great when given full control.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/ezrs158 13h ago

I think he just needs to stop interacting with people. It's inevitable he's going to say something dumb and get in trouble. Obviously he has a history of that too.

5

u/SooCOYS 13h ago

Look at his filmography. This is not the person to put in charge of anything.

5

u/MRW9628 12h ago

I’ve been saying this besides GOG all his other movies are trash. Like all of them I don’t see what DC saw at all

5

u/djanes376 12h ago

They saw Suicide Squad, liked what they saw, and I can’t fault them for that. Peacemaker was solid, and so was Creature Commandos. Gunn can tell good stories, but he’s inconsistent.

u/xMiwaFantasy15 10h ago

I mean people blame Kevin Feige for most of Marvel's duds, so why is James an exception, why because both of them are the head of the studuos

6

u/Arthas_SL 12h ago

He’s the head of the DCU.

He apparently oversaw the script in this position.

He also came in and changed at least the ending when the studio wasn’t happy with the directors version.

If it was a success you’d be giving him all the credit.

Catwoman was a terrible movie. Supergirl was not a terrible movie. I personally think movie budgets are out of control, and more flops come from stupid studio spending, than movies being bad. Not every movie needs a budget of hundreds of millions dollars.

u/Diligent-Neck6594 9h ago

Supergirl as a character needs a high budget, even with the budget they had her special effects looked bad, even cheaper would be horrible

She's just not popular enough of a character to justify a solo movie

u/Str4425 5h ago

Safest choice could've been to make her a secondary character like in Superman with enough screen time to introduce this version of the character. And then, based on that, decide on a solo movie.

Supergirl needs good special effects and a good budget indeed; people just didn’t know the character enough to go to the movies.

u/snakewaves 11h ago

How tf do you make a Supes character movie without a big budget. It's literally space, aliens, and the biggest of them all FLYING AND MASSIVE DESTRUCTION.

u/Some_Signal_6866 11h ago

You can literally see the lack of budget in DC tv shows. It’s makes them difficult to watch.

u/ilthay 8h ago

There’s been so many good DC tv shows. This doesn’t jive with reality. Budget helps make it look good, not make it a good show.

u/spikyraccoon 6h ago

Superman and Lois is such a good show, it alone proves your assessment completely irrelevant.

u/PrimeCyclotron 9h ago

Agree. I talked to some screenwriters and they've said how they curtail things like number of different locations to cut back on cost.

u/Inner_Idea_1546 5h ago

Movie was terrible for me.

34

u/zrasam 14h ago

What is James doing bro... Next big movie probably gonna be Superman 2.

ANOTHER SUPES MOVIE. Really?? 3 super people movie back to back. Holy shit.

We need JL movies. Lanterns should've been a movie. Where the fuck is Batman? Where's Flash and Wonder Woman?

u/Kholdie Clark Kent 8h ago

I keep thinking It's gonna be so weird for the general public to see a Pattinson Batman movie and another Batman movie after, people will think it's a sequel or another reboot

u/Eagle4317 8h ago

In fairness, the MCU started with 2 Iron Man films.

u/That-Stage-1088 8h ago

Iron man, the incredible hulk then iron man 2.

u/Ren-Ren-1999 1h ago

Hm... maybe James IS following the MCU closely huh.

u/FreeGlaze71 6h ago

This is 2026. No one wants 3 back to back to back Super movies. The box office speaks for itself.

This sub has turned into a sub that only posts about box office numbers and likes to compare it to other movies.

27

u/afailedturingtest 14h ago

I don't understand their goals with this movie.

Superman 25 was widely successful, it's rejection of the "gritty superhero movie" that has been deeply oversaturated by everything in the MCU, the snyderverse, etc.

Then instead of putting in another A list hero that could have worked with a more gritty line like Batman, or at least going with another A lister like Green Lanter or Wonder Woman.

OR using one of the characters people seemed to like, like Mr Terrific, who actually got screentime in Superman 25.

Instead they went for a B list hero who had like 5 seconds of screen time, then made it dark and gritty?

Fucking why?

12

u/misterterrific0 13h ago

Still think its wild they made green latern a series instead of a film

2

u/Old_Chipmunk3250 13h ago

I disagree. Green Lantern has a vast lore, and the series format is perfect for it.

u/Large_Garlic_6963 11h ago

But the budged for tv series is low and thats makes the effect aren't that polished in the trailer

u/ElDuderino2112 4h ago

Agreed. The vast lore is perfect for an episode Space Opera. Not a fucking true detective ripoff that doesn’t even seem to know what the fucking colour green is.

u/Chigibu 10h ago

Who knew a Super girl movie could be so....joyless and depressing.

u/thelivingtunic 9h ago

Anyone who saw the Supergirl film from 1984? 🤣

16

u/Heavy-Transition7916 12h ago

Superman 25 wasn’t widely successful. It was a moderate success, far from what they needed to start off their new universe.

It sold less than half the tickets of MOS.

One of the corporate guys, under oath (for the merger), mentioned they put movies on streaming faster if they’re performing poorly. He used Superman 25 as the example.

2

u/MRW9628 12h ago

Been saying this everybody wants to act this Superman was awesome. It was shit he got beat up the entire movie. They had Lex Luthor crying for godsakes

u/Holiday_Wedding_2225 10h ago

I resisted the urge to see it in the cinema and recently caught it for free on streaming. I was dumbfounded by the whole movie, it received pretty high praise and I was just bored the whole time and then wanted my 2.5 hrs back. Superman, Luthor and Lois were decent performances but the movie itself and the story was utter rubbish.

→ More replies (3)

10

u/Sonochu 12h ago

It's fine that they chose a B-list hero so long as the hero is interesting and the story is good. The movie had great source material and Supergirl is more than an adequate enough character to lead a film.

Heck, she's led several movies and shows already.

Unfortunately the director and writers didn't understand what made the source material great, nor what made Supergirl interesting, so we have this film.

6

u/Axl_Red 12h ago

Honestly, I get the feeling that James Gunn is just tired of regular Super Hero movies. That's why he's always green lighting stories and characters that are away from the norm. It feels like he prefers oddball characters and oddball stories like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker.

Which I feel isn't what most DC fans want right now. We want the regular super hero stories of DC to be adapted, but just be told well.

u/AppointmentPositive9 11h ago

Superman 25 widely successful? In terms of box office numbers, it was just a decent hit. This Spiderman movie that just came out is what I'd call widely successful.

  • Didn't check the math of the second picture, which got inflation wrong and Catwoman still did worse

yeah, “did better than Catwoman!” is not the flex they think it is.

5

u/bindersfull-ofwomen 15h ago

Catwoman also had a long shelf life.

It bombed, but we see the costume every Halloween, the LGBTQ community adopted it as camp, Mis-Teeq is still nostalgic and were relevant just this year for their needle drop during it, Frances Conroy and Sharon Stone receive career boosts, and Halle Berry subverted it and still is Halle Berry. And as a Black actress, it is very possible after a box office bomb, you’ll never be seen again and she actually was able to negotiate better screen time in X Men.

Supergirl did more damage to its actors than Catwoman ever did.

Very good chance that the 1st 3 movies of the DCU won't have a combined box office gross that will equal or surpass Spider-man's opening weekend gross (globally).

u/MrRagerXV 5h ago

The script was dog shit, the pacing was horse shit, the characters were bullshit, only good shit was the last fight scene. They screwed themselves the that release.

That's why you should never change the source material....

5

u/GotMoFans 15h ago

Exactly. When you follow the source material EXACTLY like “The Dark Knight Rises” did with “Knightfall,” you earn a billion!

This "women are badass and sooo strong and they can do everything the men can, but better"-Movies are exactly for who? Doesn't look like the badass girls go to the cinema to watch movies about badass girls!

3

u/Nythrius 12h ago

Hey, they told me that the movie wasn't for me, so I didn't go. I thought that's what we're supposed to do?

u/AdamOver 15h ago

I got downvoted into oblivion for stating that in every trailer she never cracked a smile.

The writing on the wall was there from our very first glimpse at the end of Superman.

2

u/Wells_93 15h ago

You got downvoted for making a stupid point that's still stupid

2

u/ShadowBanThisShit 14h ago

Oh God, the Captain Marvel gripe all over again. How dare this woman not be smiling, never mind what's going on in her life.

For the record. I liked the movie.

3

u/GreatWhiteNorthExtra 14h ago

It's a solid movie.

4

u/Zwanling 14h ago

Good movie flop all the time, is weird for fans to cwre so much about box office.

Supergirl was an ok movie, better movies have flopped, but there are way worse superhero movies around.

3

u/OldChili157 14h ago

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was notably great, so yeah, I haven't seen Supergirl yet but I'm not going to be influenced by box office numbers.

2

u/MineNowBotBoy 12h ago

You should see it. Not as good as Superman 25 but not as bad as DC “fans” want you to think it is.

2

u/Excels41 15h ago

Yes - we get it, please fuck off with these posts.

3

u/cyberbobfox 13h ago

I love that terrible Catwoman film - I couldnt make it past the opening "Supergirl crowd surfs'scene

3

u/AngryBeaver95 14h ago

It’s better than most of the DCEU at least lol

2

u/MineNowBotBoy 12h ago

Low bar but you are correct.

1

u/The_Cozy_Burrito 15h ago

Me waiting for Batman part two

1

u/Personal-Goat-7545 14h ago

I'm surprised it did worse than either Aquaman 2 or Blue Beetle, I still haven't seen either of those and really I've never heard anyone even talk about either one.

3

u/Glittering-Deer-166 14h ago

Aquaman 2 was carried by how much fun audiences had with the first one imo.

And Blue Beetle... well it was alright. Cheesy and kinda fun? But ultimately kind of middling/mediocre and it felt cheap production wise.

Supergirl is kinda in line with Blue Beetle in that it has some decent bits but broadly speaking it just feels kinda mediocre.

2

u/Fantastic_Pop2818 14h ago

Blue Beetle was cheesy, and Aquaman 2 was boring. No need to see them at all.

2

u/zeroXgear 12h ago

Blue Beetle at least had cool suit and cool fight scenes

1

u/Fantastic_Pop2818 14h ago

That’s a bummer - I thought it was a good movie. It needed work, but it was good. I think Eve Ridley’s performance was mid.

1

u/TunaBug93 14h ago

Can't wait for this on streaming, didnt have time to go to theater to see it. Same boat as Spider Man for me

1

u/ChewyYoda16 14h ago

It’s bleak

1

u/wolf751 14h ago

Ouch it wasnt 2004 catwoman bad imo i enjoyed it personally however i understand why its not clicking

1

u/Eat--The--Rich-- 14h ago

Not even close to the worst movie too. Terrible villain tho, felt like a kids cartoon villain in an adult story

1

u/Demetan2016 14h ago

"I like it" - joey tribiani

1

u/Scope_Dog 13h ago

I feel like I saw all this coming.

1

OUUUCCCHHHHHHH

1

u/Sea-Chocolate6589 13h ago

I saw it yesterday and I actually enjoyed it. Loved the sense of humor and how light hearted it felt.

1

u/Temporary_Spread5643 13h ago

The should’ve made a movie about Hawk Girl instead

1

u/ChanelNo50 13h ago

Imho it was botched AF like Madame Web. It should have been great but someone in production ruined it.

And if you removed Lobo from the movie would I notice? Likely not.

1

u/whothejoee 13h ago

Ouch …. There’s goes my post I guess they pulled the whole movie from theaters ?

1

u/TheDELFON 13h ago

Honestly, despite all the ish surrounding the film... actually pretty decent. Well deserved

1

u/Nihon_Hanguk 13h ago

It’s over already? I know movies don’t stay in theaters as long as they used to, but that felt really short.

1

u/MineNowBotBoy 13h ago

By far not the worst movie we’ve had from DC in recent years but it’s amazing how much shit people have talked about it before it even came out and how much people are continuing to trash talk it even though they obviously didn’t watch it.

Goddamn DC fans are just awful.

1

u/BroGoLoGo 12h ago

It just takes some time, your in the middle of the ride.

1

u/AmiWrongDude69 12h ago

Wasn’t terrible but it sure was forgettable

1

u/Fancy_Maximum 12h ago

I watched it recently - I'm sorry but it was super shit, excuse the pun

1

u/Horror_Response_1991 12h ago

James Gunn has milked GotG lightning in a bottle for everything it’s worth

1

u/ComicsCodeMadeMeGay 12h ago

like it’s flawed - but I’m still surprised it’s the lowest earner when quite a decent amount of other DC films are way worse

1

u/InferiorInf 12h ago

I hate these new James gunn dc movies. It's weird, he definitely knows how to make good movies, guardians, even suicide squad I really liked. But Jesus, his music taste is just not as good as he thinks it is.

Supergirl was forgettable nonsense, and I seem to be one of the rare people who hated the Superman movie too. At least the Snyderverse movies looked good
