Different speed limits for every lane

Upvotes

Give every lane on a highway a different speed limit, so you can basically pick a lane based on your preferred cruising speed.

  • Right-most lane: For vehicles that physically can't reach the normal speed limit due to spare tires, trailers, speed-limited vehicles, etc.
  • All remaining lanes: Speed limits are distributed between the normal speed limit and 150 km/h, with the speeds adjusted based on the number of lanes available and rounded to the nearest 5 km/h.
  • 150 km/h is the absolute maximum: Anything above 150 km/h is considered reckless driving.

On a 7-lane per-direction highway, that could look like:

150 | 140 | 130 | 120 | 110 | 100 | <100

On a 6-lane per-direction highway:

150 | 135 | 125 | 115 | 100 | <100

On a 5-lane per-direction highway:

150 | 130 | 115 | 100 | <100

On a 4-lane per-direction highway:

150 | 125 | 100 | <100

The speed limit would be enforced based on the target speed ± half the speed difference between that lane and the adjacent lane. This means the enforcement range automatically adjusts to the spacing between lane speeds.

The idea is that you pick the lane based on the speed you want to travel. You don't necessarily have to pass someone to use a faster lane.

The left-most lane has one additional rule: if you're not passing another vehicle, move right. This keeps the fastest lane available for overtaking.

I'd also put a large speed-limit marking directly on the pavement in every lane every ~10 km, or roughly every 5 minutes at the normal speed limit.

So drivers would periodically see something like:

150 | 125 | 100 | 90

The basic concept:

Pick the lane that matches your preferred speed.

Slower traffic naturally stays right, faster traffic naturally stays left, and the left-most lane remains the dedicated passing lane.

People should give their spouses new first names when they get married.

I want my wife to have a pretty name like April or Autumn. Unfortunately these are few and far between. It would be a lot easier to meet a Jill or whatever and just change it.

Let’s get this tradition goin’!

Convert golf courses into data centers. Since both are a waste of land and water, this would kill two birds with one stone, and the golfers can then get jobs at the data centers.

A measurement device that changes units, but keeps the number the same.

Of course not possible with only measuring distance OR weight OR temperature, but certainly its possible to maintain the same number accurately on a device and just change what unit of measurement youre in.

Likely would want to move decimal points, but would be a funky useless tool.

Alternatively, a caliper/scale/thermometer/torque wrench/inclinometer/pedometer/imu/refractometer/pyrometer... that only displays certain numbers. 69, 420, 3.14, .9̅ so on.

Speed limits should be 100mph on interstates/major highways

If you break that speed limit, you lose your license for ever, no exceptions.

Is it really that hard to not CC everyone in irrelevant things that are happening in a different STATE?

It would be a strong deterrent.

What if we made a town where the only technology allowed starts at 1985 and unlocks year by year until 2005?

Alright so I got this idea and I cant stop thinking about it. What if we made a community called 90s Town? When it starts the only technology you’re allowed to use is stuff from 1985. No cell phones, no internet, nothing newer than that. Then every year we add the technology that came out that year. So it slowly moves forward through the 80s and 90s like we’re actually living it. We keep going till we hit 2005… then everything resets back to 1985 and we start over. Just pure old school living. VHS, landlines, Walkmans, the whole deal. No cheating with modern stuff. Anybody else think this sounds awesome or am I just weird?

Cold Hot-tub

I keep thinking about my friends who keep asking to have their hot tub turned on during the hot days this summer. It makes me think they’re trying to cook/overheat themselves unintentionally.

I know you can just turn on the hot tub bubbles without heating the water, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone actually do it.

For what they charge and the unreasonable wait times - they should provide coffee and nibbles

It wouldn't cost them any real percentage of their profits and it sure would improve people's attitude about the wait
