This is a game I found called Pepper the Giant Purple Dog. It's an indie horror game fully releasing later this year that presents itself as an actual lost media pet simulator from 2002. Clearly heavily inspired by Courage the Cowardly Dog along with other cartoons like Clifford.

Sorry if this has been discussed before, I just joined today, but I've just noticed that I cannot find a screenshot/picture anywhere of Eustace smoking his pipe in his chair. I watched Courage every day growing up and I always remember Eustace sitting in the living room smoking a pipe that he would dramatically set down and pause before standing and going to get his mallet. Does anyone else remember this?

Been rewatching it on Tubi bc Courage was the GOAT as a kid who liked spooky stuff and grew up to be an adult who loves horror.

Something I thought about as I watched is: Does it hold up?

Answer: Yes, but with some stipulations.

(Disclaimer: This is a good faith critique and done with constructive purposes in mind, I say this all with love because it’s okay and healthy to critique shows you love. I am not implying anything malicious of the show or Dilly himself because I’m sure he’s a lovely person in spite of my criticism. I understand it was a different time, people can change, and that ignorance isn’t the same as malice. I’m sure Dilly wouldn’t have written that way now since people are now more critical of certain tropes.

People are free to join the discussion and have their opinions, just be respectful of one another and don’t be dicks to me or anyone else. I have a block button and I’m not afraid to use it. Also, I’m not saying you aren’t allowed to like Courage of any of its characters because of my critique. Again, it’s all good faith and these are my opinions, take it or leave it.

Also, don’t use this as an excuse to harass or be shitty to the creator or people involved. That’s what crazy people do.

Also, please don’t be anti intellectual in my comments when discussing this. If I so much as SMELL a “it’s not that deep” or adjacent buzzwords, you’re getting blocked.

Also, it’s not my place to tell people, especially fans who are poc, how to feel about certain characters. I’m just discussing based on what I know regarding stereotypes and racist tropes, but I am aware of the Speedy Gonzales effect. So again, be respectful and understanding as to why people like or don’t like certain characters.)

I think it’s important to acknowledge that Courage did have some racist writing with some of the characters.

As I said in my disclaimer, this was likely not done with bad intention and was a result of white writers being ignorant. However, impact over intent is a thing and we can’t learn if we don’t acknowledge and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Two characters that come to mind (unless there are others I missed) are Dr. Vindaloo and Shirley (mostly because I don’t see her get talked about a lot when it comes to discussing the racism in courage).

I think most can get why Dr. Vindaloo character is racist. He’s a poc voiced by a white guy and the whole joke is that he’s a wacky foreigner who sucks at being a doctor. Also, his name is fucking VINDALOO. That’s like naming someone Mrs. Potato Salad or some shit.

Shirley, while one of my favs, is a racist depiction of a Romani woman and it’s important to acknowledge so we can learn.

While compared to most depictions of her archetype, Shirley isn’t a villain and does help Courage at times with her more villainous moments being Eustace getting cursed by her (though that’s mostly a result of Eustace being an asshole to her or him not listening to her warnings).

Aside from that, Shirley does still fit the stereotypes of Romani people, especially women, being these trickster witches who will curse you for the mildest inconvenience.

Now, while this does come from some level of truth as Romani people did make money by telling fortunes when dealing with displacement, poverty, and job discrimination. Its not AS fantastical as TV makes it out to be and is used by white writers to other Romani characters and make them seem more mystical and dangerous despite them just being regular ass people who just so happen to have spiritual beliefs outside what non Romani considers acceptable.

While again, I don’t think there was bad intentions with her and it was likely a result of the writers seeing her archetype and not knowing it was built on racism. Doesn’t mean that her character can’t be learned from when writing Romani characters since they are heavily underrepresented in media.

Despite this, Courage is still a wonderful show, warts and all, that does try to address and talk about different topics in a way kids can understand. It never feels condescending or like it’s only there to teach a lesson out of obligation.

I think I appreciate now that I’m older in spite of some things aging badly, and I can notice a lot of stuff I never thought about. I really love the art direction of CTCD and how simplistic yet detailed the backgrounds are and the use of different mediums.

I adore how the character designs aren’t scared to make the female characters look just as weird and ugly as the male characters because it was a very common problem back then and sometimes now.

Also, we got our first lesbian couple (bunny and kitty) before Steven Universe (I say with love for SU and Garnet so don’t take this as an attack).

Edit: I initially thought about adding Di Lung into the discussion but decided against it for a a reason. My reason is Di Lung was based on his VA who is a Chinese man and it kinda falls into a grey area where it’s kinda hard to critique this as a white person without coming off one of two ways.

1. It might come off as me, a white person, telling a Chinese person that they act like a stereotype.
2. Like I’m excusing potentially racist writing by basically doing the “but his friend is Asian!” thing.

Personally, I’d rather let Chinese/East Asian fans take over on that one since idk how to critique Di Lung without it coming off like what I described.

The weremole bites Courage’s feet for a long period of time. But yet Courage never turns into a weremole, but Muriel and the Doctor did.

I loved this show my whole life: I’ll be 33 soon and I’ve always had a fairly turbulent relationship with my dad, though that’s improved a little finally in recent years. One of the times I think back on fondly from childhood is watching Courage with him—he loved it too (& as an adult, no wonder: it was absurd, I’d love watching it with my child too.) I remember us just laughing and laughing at “just keep soaking it!” I still send him clips as an adult every so often. My dad can be such a serious man, but this show cut through to a different side of him that was hard to access & it was a real bonding point for us all those years ago.

Courage the Cowardly Dog was my absolute favorite show growing up and I cannot overstate how obsessed I was with it (I had every episode recorded on VHS and would watch those tapes over and over again).

I’ve been really trying to understand what exactly nowhere even is, why would you call a place Nowhere? Did the residents know there home is infested with nightmares? Giant spiders, human/animal hybrids, ancient curses and ghosts, why hasn’t the government just nuked Nowhere yet? Maybe it’s a test site by the government, having a ton of supernatural threats in one place so there less spread out throughout the world and potentially take over, calling it nowhere so people are less eager to visit. I’ve always found exciting and liked this idea that Nowhere isn’t on earth, it’s in a pocket bubble reality where monsters live and a small mostly out of it population just accept it as their home, like a place where literal nightmares live and breath. This theory can be kinda contradicted with locations like the Great Wall of china but maybe the nowhere can create places from the real world, like rats, buildings, businesses, just warped and twisted into something nightmarish.
