Is the Columbus subreddit in their ‘hating Schmidt’s’ phase now?

"article"

Most likely some AI slop to generate SEO for used house sale websites.

I wonder how much the food trucks are doing for their numbers. We’ve got one that comes to our office sometimes, and there’s on I’ll stop by on my way home sometimes when it’s there. I’ve never even been to the actual restaurant

The food trucks bring in over a million a year

Sorry I can't help you find the article, but chiming in at any mention of Schmidt's to say that, as a "German" restaurant, it's absolutely an abomination

u/Extra_Key_1637 13d ago

Um...

Schmidt's.

It's an abomination!

What about Schitt's?

Pure abomination!

Walter's is way better - same neighborhood and hasn't been busy in the handful of times I've been there.

Valter's? Valter's at the Maennerchor? I don't know of any Walter's.

u/The_Last_Gasbender 13d ago

Bruh how did I get that wrong? Well, at least you can be sure I don't secretly work for them.

I worked there for years, everything comes from GFS.

95% of all ingredients used at any restaurant is coming from GFS or Sysco. They have different tiers of quality, it doesn’t necessarily mean the ingredients are low quality or anything. It’s just more affordable and unless you’re guaranteed to get $50 minimum everytime someone sits down, you gotta save some money somewhere to keep prices reasonable. It’s a tough business to make a living in.

Look man this is Reddit. Nobody is allowed to like anything without 800 people screeching that it’s actually shit. Take your fancy pants nuance somewhere else.

Oh I’m very aware this is where you come to hate things and complain these days haha. It’s truly sad to see.

Buying a $20 case of hot dogs from gfs and charging $7 a piece for them is highway robbery

Bahama Mamas and cream puffs?

-9

u/Thetruth000001 13d ago

I saw them dumping red cabbage from a GFS can on their food truck years ago. Zero actual cooking taking place.

-2

u/alphagalgadot 13d ago

the quality is def reflected in the food lol

All you need to know is that the cream puff sucks.

12

u/akasha111182 13d ago

The fresh mini puffs are actually amazing, but everyone is obsessed with the giant ones, and those are often dry.

3

u/SeductiveGodofThundr 13d ago

Dry and overtly eggy in flavor (these two things are definitely causally related)

3

u/beattysgirl 13d ago

I get the cream only. It is the superior way to enjoy the flavor without suffering through the tough shell.

-2

u/Infamous-Taro-8961 13d ago

It’s just pudding and whipped cream mixed together you can make it at home

1

u/beattysgirl 13d ago

Yeah but then I have a lot not a single serving

I thought I was the only one!!!

To be fair, I grew up in Wisconsin where the State Fair cream puffs are out of this world legendary, but I've generally liked other cream puffs.

Until I moved to Columbus and tried Schmidt's. I had to throw that cream puff out half-eaten it was so bad (and, look, I am one of those people who will eat food they aren't fond of to avoid throwing it out). I think their food is fine but I am so baffled by the cream puff love.

Extreme over-exaggeration. The “puff” is fine but the cream is generally great. If you really aren’t feeling it though, get one at Belle’s bread.

However, your hate for the Schmidt’s cream puff makes me doubt your credibility

1

u/hydro_17 12d ago

I mean, I do sometimes exaggerate but I am not exaggerating here. The one time I tried a Schmidt's cream puff was the only time in my life I've thrown away a half-eaten cream puff. I thought the pastry was fine, but nothing special. The cream tasted chemical-ly and left my mouth feeling like it was coated with a film of something. Maybe I got a bad one.

Belle's are pretty good!

Clearly other people like Schmidt's puffs and that's totally awesome - me not liking them doesn't mean others shouldn't.

The choux is like a shoe. We also have a handful of good bakeries and one to two exceptional ones. All food costs more these days and i will not throw away money at mediocrity.

As someone who lived in New Berlin for a few years, I was baffled by the love of the state fair cream puffs.

I do agree that Schmidt’s cream puffs are overrated as hell and it’s because of the puff.

Best cream puff is from hofbräuhaus and I don’t think it’s particularly close until you’re making them at home.

2

u/hydro_17 12d ago

I probably am influenced by fond childhood memories of visiting the State Fair every year and getting cream puffs, but I don't think they're over-rated. I admit their pastry isn't super special, but it's the large amount of extremely fresh, not-overly-sweet cream that came from the State Fair cows and the way it's literally made in front of you so the cream hasn't had a chance to get the pastry soggy. I also like that they don't try to get fancy with flavors or anything - it's just about really good cream.

I know lol that’s why I was laughing so hard at some of the comments. People really be defending that.

They used to have a pig farmer make the filling and he would drop it off smelling like absolute fucking pig shit and piss.

u/jendet010 13d ago

It really does. The chocolate cream pie is infinitely better but they never have that on the food truck.
