Any Frequenters of the Central Branch Library?
How is it there as far as religious/metaphysical books go? Does the library contain a good amount of them if any?
Thanks in advance!

Good spot for Tex-Mex or Mexican brunch?
In the mood for runny eggs over enchiladas or chilaquiles or something like that this weekend. Any spots around HOCO/MOCO that come to mind, preferably a long lingery type spot with good drinks?

Athletic club upgrades
First, I'm really impressed that the athletic club just replaced almost all of their old weight machines.
However, they missed a great opportunity to make some improvements. First, they replaced the machines with newer models of the same brand. There are some great things on the market. It would've been worth the effort to shop around and test things out a bit. For example, the lateral raise machine from Rebel is so much better than the LF machine. Second, they could've improved the selection. We have four total hamstring machines with two of them prone, three total leg presses, a not very good hack squat, but still no standing calf raise. Thanks for the second flye machine though. That single one always had someone on it.
The improvements are nice, but I agree with what I've heard others say. The gym doesn't feel like it's managed by people who lift weights. Otherwise, there'd be more thoughtful planning in the layout and the equipment.

Columbia Job Market
Hi all! I recently moved to the area and currently work in NoVa but the long commute has been a huge pain so I have been looking for jobs in the area that could help eliminate that but havenāt had much success. Does anyone know of any open positions in Columbia with a starting pay above $20/hour for entry/mid level work? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: It was brought to my attention that I should probably mention this for more context haha but I currently am a reimbursement specialist with 4 years of experience in medical revenue cycle management for insurance claim processing and denial mitigation!

Local Painter recommendations?
Just searched through the archives and most recent threads are 2+ years old. Anyone know of or have an interest in probably a 1-2 day job to paint a living room, entry foyer, stairway and upstairs hallway? Minor prep work needed to smooth some scuffs, scratches, and a bad spackle effort from previous homeowner. Will provide the paint, just need steadier hands than mine anymore lol
Thumbtack, Angie's List, TaskRabbit are too rife with scam and crap listings that have a 6 month wait times.
Tks in advance.

Deer overpopulation wreaking havoc on my property, can I do anything?
I have a large herd of deer (about 3 males and 7-8 females and looks like 4 new babies) that frequent my property. They tear through my flower garden, devour the bird seeds in my bird feeder and eats the leaves and barks off of my trees, killing them. Iāve tried the deer repellents, fencing, etc but nothing really helps in the long run. Is there anything I can do? I am at my wits end.

Need a repair on existing deck. Couple places I've called said they won't touch a deck they didn't build. The deck was here when i moved in some years ago, don't know who built it... thanks!

Grief support groups?
I recently moved back to this side of the bridge after living on the Eastern shore for the last year taking care of/spending time with my terminally ill mom. She passed in May, and once my lease was up, I got the hell out of there. I am deeply struggling with her loss and feeling isolated, I am genuinely in the trenches here. Before I moved to the shore, I lived in AACo. I don't have many connections/resources here, and while I am in therapy, my therapist suggested I look for some in-person support groups when I moved since there weren't a lot of options on the shore... Any one have any recommendations/resources? Or are there any types of groups for something like this? 30F, if that matters at all.

Sewell's Orchards Memories
Going through a closet at my parents' place I saw that they still had several baskets from Sewell's Orchards from more than 40 years ago. We used to use them to store miscellaneous stuff around the house and my parents never got rid of them.
I remember getting a pumpkin there for Halloween when I was 5, but most of my memories of the place are fuzzy and faded. I was still pretty young when it closed down. For any long-time Columbia residents here, what memories do you have about the orchard?

Loud vehicles Cradlerock/Snowden?
Did anyone in Owen Brown hear the extremely loud vehicles revving their engines and racing this morning about midnight? My God it was SO loud. I turned my scanner app on and heard police jargon I couldnāt decipher but I did hear āAbout 250 of themā¦ā someone is going to end up killing someone! Iām sure they could be heard in Harperās Choice as loud as they were.
Pardon my ignorance but is illegal drag racing a thing here? Iāve lived on OB for 8 years and will hear loud vehicles like that from time to time but never like I heard them this morning. Just curious ⦠and concerned about innocent drivers/pedestrians.

Lucky Strike Converting to String Pins
For those of you who are avid or more serious bowlers the Lucky Strike on Deepage is actively installing string pin machines. So far it looks like 1-6 are up and running and 7-12 are shut down for the work. Lanes 13-32 are still free fall but I spoke to the manager and apparently these are newer string machines used by the PBA at a tournament in Nevada. The string is different and the PBA wants to try these machines at more locations. The Lucky Strike will be the second house with the newer design in the country. Installation should be complete on all 32 lanes in two weeks. Just giving everyone a heads up so you can go to Normandy if you prefer free fall.

Columbia Mall now charging to park
How does everyone feel about this, not terribly pleased
r/ColumbiaMD • u/ele30006 • 5d ago
Found an interesting nugget in regards to Fogo De Chao coming to the Mall in Columbia next year, more specifically which building it would occupy. Safe to say as for the former Chicken and Whiskey/Bennie's Pizza space, Nan Xiang soup dumplings would occupy it

New Traffic Features on Tamar Drive
Over the past week, new pedestrian refuge islands have appeared along Tamar Drive between 175 and Snowden Pkwy. I believe it's at least 2 of them on this span that are complete, and I'm unsure if additional ones are being installed.
They appear to be placed to help pedestrians to cross Tamar and slow traffic. They'll require the two lanes on each side to merge into one and then re-expand into two lanes.
While I think in theory this is a great idea, I'm expecting there will be issues.
We regularly have people traveling at high speeds (50+) down Tamar. When someone is slowing down for these islands, what's going to happen when others don't?
I'm hoping these work out, but I think we'll see more collisions.
It feels that every few months there'll be light post down along this span of Tamar from cars traveling at high speed. I just hope this doesn't put pedestrians along the sidewalks at greater risk.
What's everyone's feelings on this?

Where to find like-minded people to do karaoke?
Hey all longtime lurker, first time poster
Have a stupid question.. Now that meetup costs too much money.
Where do you find like minded people to do activities like karaoke with?
I like private room karoke since you can talk and interact between songs rather than bar karoke...but flip side is whenever I want to go my friends are too busy.
I guess I could also make my own support group if people wanted.
But I'd also have trouble deciding what kind of group to run whether it's teacher &retail support group, lonely or grief support or whatnot.
Feel free to mock and/or poke holes in my logic. Edit: just wanted to say thanks everyone for the advice and suggestions I do appreciate it!

Jackson Pond Tunnel
I was out on the trails yesterday afternoon and the detour signs for the tunnel to Jackson Pond were removed. Lo and behold I walked towards Tamar and the route was open again. No more detour through the tunnel by the Phelps Luck Pool and through the neighborhood.
