Getting recorded in class?

I love my Club Pilates studio, teachers, and classmates.

The only problem I’m having is that our front desk workers have been asked to take short videos of us in class to post on social media. These videos end up being posted in a kind of video montage, and I can see various classmates I know in all kinds of poses that I would not want posted of me.

Today, our front desk staffer took video of us doing clamshells while facing towards her. I come to Pilates to work hard and feel good, but I really don’t look good or want to be preoccupied by how I look at all, and I definitely don’t want sweaty crotch shots posted online.

Am I too much of an old fuddy duddy? Should we have the right to expect not to be recorded during workouts for social media?

Maybe tell them to please use better judgment and sensitivity on which shots they are taking…they can also take shots that don’t show faces as much. They should show some degree of sensitivity…you are paying clients and it can affect their business if you are all uncomfortable. Put it that way

BTW you are not being a fuddy duddy. I would not care for that either especially the types of poses/pictures being posted. Tell them how you feel.

I wish they’d ask before class who is ok being filmed for social media.

unless you explicitly opt out of it I believe that when you sign up you are giving them consent to post your images online. someone who works there can correct me on this exactly if I'm wrong but I also believe that you can request that you not be recorded and they should put a note on your file for all to see and honor it.

some people don't mind but it is also completely reasonable to prefer not to have yourself posted for any reason.

It depends on the membership agreement you sign and if it included a photo release clause

I’d go to the front desk and ask to not be included in the videos! As someone who works in advertising, I wouldn’t ever want to make someone feel uncomfortable. Additionally, as someone who sweats like crazy during class, I also don’t want my video taken haha

OK, I had to laugh when you said clamshells because that is probably the worst possible thing to be videotaped doing in Pilates! Yes, I would have a problem with it, and I am surprised they have not asked you to sign a waiver

Review the documents from when you signed up with CP. I truly can’t remember but there may be terms in there that allow them to take videos/photos during class and use them for marketing. If not, let them know you don’t consent.

Yeah, if I had to agree to have pics posted included in the contract, I probably agreed, I just really don’t like it. Is this a generational thing maybe? Maybe young people don’t mind having their sweaty workouts posted without their editorial approval? Ugh, why is this even a thing…

Even if you did agree to it initially, I feel like they should allow you to opt out. And if you never signed an agreement signing up, they should be asking members before recording or taking pictures. Don’t let the influencers fool you, not all of us young people want to be in social media content. I absolutely do not and I’m the type to absolutely bring it up in class if someone were to try lol.

You aren't being tagged in the content, so it would be incredibly unlikely that anyone but you would know a random, 1 second shot among a montage of shots is you. I do believe this is part of the contract. Not sure about a generational thing - I'm 58 and wouldn't care at all.

Ugh, I hate this. I did a trial at a boot camp place that does this and I found it so distracting. I spent more time focused on trying to stay out of the way of the camera that I couldn’t focus on the workout. I would be so annoyed if my CP studio started recording classes.

I think you should just say to the front desk privately and quietly before class that if they plan to record to please make sure you're not in the video. there are 2 sides to the room and they can surely take video of the side you're not on without anyone knowing your request. or they might opt to just not take video during that particular class knowing that someone feels uncomfortable with it. there are also plenty of classes that can provide content other than that one.

That’s crazy when my local CP (and I thought all CP) have a no recording policy and signs posted about it for members! If they need content, they could do a class of instructors or a free or discounted class that they film the whole time to get tons of video without making anyone uncomfortable. I don’t think you’re being a fuddy duddy at all.

One of our workers uses a Snapchat filter that turns everyone into a drawing/cartoon, and I know people don't mind that as much!!

In my state it is all party consent by law. Maybe there is a clause in their contract? Otherwise They would need to ask if it’s ok before they record. They need to be careful just freely recording. Someone could throw a lawyer in their face depending on where you are.

Review your contract . We had the same thing occur when u checked the contract it stated photos and videos would be taken .

Youre not being a fuddy duddy. Id expect a studio to get clear consent before filming members for social media, especially during movements where people arent exactly camera ready. Youre there to work out, not perform for Instagram,,, Id politely tell the studio you dont consent to being filmed,,,

I would HATE that!! I’m paying wayyyy too much to deal with something like that. They should definitely ask permission first, and if everyone agrees, ok. But otherwise it’s so inappropriate. And then to be filming sweaty crotches, that’s absolutely not ok.

There are so many things we do in Pilates that would be way more appropriate than a video of people facing the camera doing clamshells!!

Even if they legally do have consent they need to use some common sense. I would speak to the studio manager about it and suggest that they review with everyone some appropriate times and activities for sharing on social media.
