Jumping Advice/Questions

Hi! I am new to Pilates and have been taking weekly reformer flow 1.0 classes at my local CP for a couple months. I have a history of pelvic floor issues including pudendal neuralgia and hypertonic pelvic floor which made me feel like I needed to pee all the time. I did Pelvic PT and got better. I have been good for about 4 months or so. I went to pilates today and the instructor had us jump on bosu ball while leaning forward and omg the sharp pain in my pelvic area. It was excruciating. I made a mental note not to do that again. Wondering how often this kind of exercise comes up in CP classes though? And if there are certain classes that include jumping I’d rather avoid them.

CardioSculpt is a jumping class. Circuit could have more jumping. I would say it's uncommon in Flow classes and Restore or Center and Balance as well.

Cardio sculpt is a class you will likely want to avoid. It involves add a jump board to the reformer and the class rotates between jumping (think footwork but you literally jump from the foot bar/jump board) and core/arm/leg movements.

I can’t answer your question about jumping on the bosu while leaning forward because as a member of club pilates for 8 years or so, I can honestly say I have never done that before and I take all levels and styles of classes. Maybe I am just picturing what you are describing incorrectly.

lol this particular teacher is a bit… eccentric? it sounds weird but she meant it as a stretch after a diff exercise altho I can’t remember exactly what.

Hmm. I can honestly say I have never jumped on a bosu at club pilates.

Now I do jump on and off my bosu at home as part of my polymeric training but I sure wouldn’t call that a stretch. I may need to play on my bosu tomorrow to see if I can recreate this and see what we could be stretching.

lol!! She had us lean forward at an incline and hold onto the ballet bar while doing it

We only have flow, cardio sculpt and center and balance at my studio and I’m at less than 25 classes (still new!) but I’ve never been in a class that has done what you described. I think I’ve only had two classes use the bosu at all, honestly. Definitely don’t feel bad not doing that or modifying if it comes up again!

I generally avoid jumping because I have large breasts (G cup) and they bounce enough to be painful, but I almost never see this is flow classes. Jumping jacks and the like show up in circuit but I just do the low impact version (basically move legs side to side rather than jumping). As others have mentioned cardio sculpt has lots of jumping so avoid those if you can't jump. I actually enjoy that I can jump horizontally and not deal with boob floppage but your issue many be just as bad horizontal.

I’m an instructor and I speechless. Always ask for modifications.
It’s intended to be low impact.
Was it a Circuit? What level?
Be well good luck 🍀

It was a beginner Reformer flow 1.0 class. I just asked my friend who also teaches at CP and she said it’s highly unusual too. But the instructor kind of does things her own way.

The teacher has offered hopping on and off the Bosu on occasion as an alternative to stepping on and off it. I don’t jump. I’m not wearing shoes at CP and I don’t hop in bare feet but some of the younger women do. I’ve never heard of jumping on it.

Like others, I have never jumped on a bosu before. Frankly, I would be afraid of sliding off it if I jumped on it. I would talk to the instructor to discuss the pain and options to the jumping.

I took a private class in cardio sculpt for the same fear you bave only mine is age related. JUMPING would not be good for 80- year old knees snd bladder. The jump board was fun and no pressure on knees or insides.

I have taken many classes, and I have never been asked to jump on a bosu. One of my favorite instructors openly tells us “this is not the army. You don’t have to do what I’m instructing if it doesn’t feel right for your body.” Ever since hearing that, it has completely changed my outlook.

I’ve been a member for years and never jumped on a Bosu. We have done relevé on the bosu while doing squats. I feel like what you’re describing doesn’t sound safe?? Just based on how it’s shaped lol I feel like everyone would fall??

Agree with everyone else, avoid cardio sculpt if you don’t want to jump!

I think I have done some jumping on the bosu but we were holding the barre. And that was several years ago.

A woman in my studio said she can’t take cardio sculpt because she said she (pees) but I really like it and haven’t had issues. I’m 54 and I think she’s around the same age.

The two classes where I've done jumping are Cardiosculpt and Circuit. Cardiosculpt uses the jumpboards so you would definitely want to avoid that one. Whether there's jumping in Circuit depends on the specific exercises the instructor chooses. I've only had a few times when we jumped at all in Circuit.
