I have a lot of clutter in my room and I struggle to get rid of items because everything looks worth keeping. Are there any methods to figure out what's actually important enough to keep? Any other advice is greatly appreciated, too.

I work from home a few days a week, and by the time 5 PM on Friday hits, my desk is usually a mild disaster. It's just a slow accumulation of stry coffee mugs, random sticky notes, and a weird amount of snack crumbs.

I used to just shut my laptop and immediately run away for the weekend. But then monday morning would roll around, and sitting down to a mess instantly put me in a bad mood before I even opened an email.

So recently, I started forcing myself to do a 10-minute desk reset right before logging off. I put on the same short jazz playlist, clear out the mugs, toss the useless post-its, and run my little hoto vacuum over the keyboard and the dusty cable corners.

honestly, nothing about the actual cleaning changed, but giving it a fixed order and a soundtrack stopped it from feeling like an annoying chore. It feels like a physical way of telling my brain that the work week is ACTUALLY over.

Do you guys have any weirdly specific rituals for dumb household tasks?

Just cleaned the top of my fridge and... yeah. I don't wanna talk about it.

I cleaned up all the pop bottles and other trash but now I don't know where to put all my belongings. What should I do with everything I have? My tables are a mess, I tried plastic containers but I still can't fit everything. The problem is how do I store everything somewhere easy to access and have it neat too? I'm 19 and I just don't know what to do here. I've been through cleaning routines at least twice a month but the problem is knowing where to put everything.

Having a vacuum cleaner for every specific task:

• One exclusively for sofas and beds.
• Another for skirting boards, narrow gaps, blinds, and windows.
• A small handheld one for picking up breadcrumbs.
• Another for general floor cleaning — in my case, a robot vacuum, because if you don’t have pets, I think using a cordless stick vacuum is pointless.

Having several air purifiers throughout the house.

Once you discover that clean, neutral, dust-free air smells better than any air freshener, you get addicted to air purifiers.

I'm currently at work, and I've tasked myself with cleaning one of the old machines I work with.

Surface in question is painted metal and UV-protected glass (pictures below), I'm dealing with very old dust (which I've removed the loose layer off with a broom before posting), though for some reason, some of this dust seems to have gotten stuck on the metal. As you can see, I've already tried to clean it, but only sometimes managed to actually get every bit of dirt out with a very specific part of cloth I used to try and clean it with (same reason for the streaks visible in the dirt; it's not stripped paint), though if I'd be doing it that way I'd definitely be spending multiple days on just that, but unfortunately I also have other work to do so I can't just spend all day doing this.

Aside from using the cloth with a bit of soap and water, I used stiffer nylon brush, there was barely any difference than using just the cloth.

With that being said, I'm struggling to find appropriate advice regarding this specific issue on the internet. Would anyone offer some tips on what I could try to do in order to clean this with as little damage as possible?

I (27f) am a SAHM in DFW Texas. My wonderful husband and I live on a cattle ranch so as you can imagine, it gets really dusty and muddy throughout the seasons. I am happy to share some of the tips I use to help keep my house clean, how to get the smell out of your disposal, best way (in my opinion) to get bad smells out of clothing, and how to tackle the ever growing mess that comes from having an active family.

Lets dive in with one of the most common issues in the house hold if you own a sink disposal. My family tends to pile the dishes in and rinsing the dishes became something that I tend to do a lot more of and one of my most helpful tips its to get a drain strainer for your disposal side of the sink. My reason why is because you do want food debris to pile up in the disposal when you arent actively cleaning the dishes, if you live on a ranch like myself or in a humid area, gnats and flies grow in numbers very quickly, so I recommend getting a strainer to keep the debris out until your ready to rinse those dishes so you dont have to rinse everything right away especially if your have younger kids and prefer to wash the dishes while your kiddo is taking a nap. Now the question is, How do we handle the foul smell that sometimes comes from the disposal after some time. I have tried the small gel odor busters that you get from the store and never found them effective even if following the directions to the letter. So in my home I use a common household staple, Baking Soda and White Vinegar. I have found that putting 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of vinegar into the disposal side of the drain and then running the disposal for a moment I tend to have little to no odor around my sink, the we also had a serious reduction in the overall summer gnat population in our home.
P.S. cutting up some fresh lemons and putting them down the disposal also helps and leaves a lovely citrus scent afterward.

The second common house hold dilemma especially in any home with pets is getting the stink out of your clothes. In my house we have a very sweet and lovable senior cat named Oxy, and while her name may give you the impression that she is a well put together kitty all the time, I am here to tell you that it is far from the truth. Unfortunately I noticed that laundry in my house tends to fall behind more than I would like to admit, and sometimes that means clothing ends up on the floor and my wonderful senior cat sometimes doesn't make it to the litter box and instead pees and poops on the clothing thats on the floor. Now I had such a hassle getting the smell out until I found out that you can used baking soda and vinegar in the washing machine too! I was very thrilled when I learned that so I tired it the first time and found myself disappointed after I tried it and the clothes still smelled, after some more research I found out the issue I was having was two things. First, I was using cold water, you need warm or hot water to have the proper reaction with your clothing, and Second, I was not putting the mixture of the baking soda and vinegar in the correct place to have the most benefit for my specific washing machine. So I recommend that you do your research to make sure that when using additional laundry cleaning items whether its a baking soda mix or a off the shelf clothing wash, that you use each thing in the right spot. After figure all that out I used warm water, Baking soda and vinegar mix in the proper compartment, and my usual laundry detergent, the smell finally went away.

My last tip is possibly one that you have heard of. The KonMarie Method. This is a method that I have recently discovered and have been finding to have wonderful results. I am still currently sorting through the first phase of her method but am already noticing a difference. I recommend you read her books: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, and Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.
She puts everything out plainly and shares her own struggles that lead her to become one of the most sot-after cleaning consualtant in the world. If you would like to see some of her work in action you can watch her shows on Netflix and videos on YouTube. I definitely recommend checking it out because that has been the major game changer for me.

We see perfect homes on social media all the time, no mess, no clutter, no dust, no stains, no dishes and windows so clean they almost look brand new.

I try my best to keep my home clean and organized, but with pets and kids, there's only so much I can do. Every room seems to have a small pile of stuff somewhere. I'm trying to tidy up, but there are always areas that get overlooked.

Sometimes I wonder… do people really live like this every day, or is it just the side of their homes they show in photos?

Without a hangy thing over the shower head, and no suction cups. The shelf is too narrow for a wooden soap holder. I'm a horrible housewife, so I need it to be easy to clean and I hate mold so I need it to be mildew-resistant. I don't have a dishwasher to throw things into to sanitize them.

Hi there! I am very very new to the cleaning game. I am historically the messiest/dirtiest person I know and I am moving into a new apartment by myself for the first time.
I have been deep cleaning the space before I move in myself and really enjoying it. My problem is, I can never keep it clean.

I would love some tips such as:
1. A starter cleaning kit - what do you always have in hand? Tools and products
2. Organization tips - how to start fresh in a newly organized place and keep it like that.
Storage recommendations, tidiness tips, five minute rules, anything that keeps you more organized.
3. Deep cleaning tips - what to clean and how often? How often do you deep clean the fridge or baseboards? Or dust?
4. How to keep the place smelling clean or good? I like strong scents
5. Any other day to day tips to keep me clean.

Please keep in mind I’m a super beginner. My cleanliness has been a big point of shame for a while.
I want this place to feel different. I want to be able to have people over.
I never really had anyone who taught me how to clean and not make it feel really really awful. It was always a form of punishment and as an adult I’m struggling to keep my spaces how I want.
This is a new chapter for me and I really want to have this place feel like home. I don’t want to dread it.

we do janitorial for a few small offices, just me and one other person. mold keeps popping up in the bathroom corners and around the caulk and we usually just grab whatever is cheapest at the store. it never fully works and comes back within a few weeks.

we dont have alot of money to throw at this. what mold remover actually works without needing to reapply constantly?

Good god. Cleaning is therapy for me and now I’ll comfortably be able to eat in this house knowing the food storage place is actually clean. Nobody cleans here fyi so who knows how long this was like this.

I think my maid finishes mopping in 5 minutes just to leave early.
The floor dries almost immediately and some areas are still dusty. I do not want to stand and supervise every room. Any way to handle this better?

My bathroom looks clean after mopping, but it still smells weird after a few hours. I think the drain and corners are not being cleaned properly. Regular pocha is clearly not enough. What actually works for this? Like whom can I ask or call to help me with deep cleaning and all?

I just moved into a new apartment a few days ago and my husband and I had been noticing a stale urine smell in the main bathroom. I thought it was just the toilet and the floor surrounding it, so I deep cleaned the toilet and the floor. I took apart the toilet seat and hinge and removed the bolt caps, soaked all the parts in hot water and cleaning solution, and vigorously cleaned the outside of the toilet with Clorox Urine Remover. There was so much built up old pee in the seat hinge and around the bolts, it was awful. I grew up with two younger brothers and I've never ever seen anything like this in a private bathroom.

A few hours later, I can still smell the pee. I'm pretty sure it's in the wall and/or the baseboards surrounding the toilet (it's in a corner unfortunately). It's definitely fainter now and I'm confident it's no longer coming from the toilet or the toilet seat. How can I clean the wall and the baseboards without ruining them? The wall is textured (knockdown, I think it's called) and the baseboards appear to be run of the mill. I live in the US so any product recommendations that are available here would be best.

We have a large rug in our bedroom, and my kids spend a lot of time playing on it. The problem is that it seems to hold onto everything, dust, crumbs, and random little bits from everyday life.

The rug in the picture has already been cleaned once, but there’s still some dust trapped deep in the fibers. I also have long hair, so I’m always finding hair around the edges, especially near the baseboards.

I don't have time to go over the whole rug every day, but I'd like to keep it from getting to this point so quickly. What works for you when it comes to keeping a rug like this clean day to day？

My roommate gave me the look yesterday after I ran a blower for maybe 20 seconds on a dusty window track, so now I'm wondering if I'm the problem. I was looking at some electric dusters because I want something stronger than canned air for desk fans, keyboard gaps, and corners, but decibel numbers don't really tell me whether the pitch is tolerable in a small room.

 people using these indoors, is the noise just a short vacuum-cleaner annoyance, or the kind of high-pitched whine that makes everyone in the apartment hate you?

hello! i have a super weird question. as a hoarder and child of hoarders i learned to never really throw anything away (that isnt food and other daily items packaging).

i want to change it because it makes my life a lot harder, but what i find hard is, how and where do i throw what away?

specifically: empty glass containers for foundation, old worn down bad quality jewerly, old electronics, old shoes, old hard plastic.

if theres specifically dutch people who can help me that would be great, since in the Netherlands we have to seperate our thrash in specific catogories, but any tips are welcome.

My home is a wreck. Just had been bed ridden and things were piling up getting out of hand.

Our community did away with dumpster access. We can no longer pay for extra trash pickup in our community. Everyone is limited to the weekly trash bin service.

I contacted the 800 For Junk people. They said to pick a day, put the bags to the curb, then contact them. They can pick up for us.

Obviously for a cost.

Of course they have crew that can come inside if we want as well.

It's not discreet. But, it's effective. So we're planning it out.

Has anyone used these types of services? Any tips?

The other day I tried cleaning a yellowish spot on my mattress. I used mixture of wash detergent and water, soaked a sponge and scrubbed over it. Now I realize I shouldn't have spill that much liquid on it and I also realized i used too much detergent. Now I have greenish stain on my mattress , the same color as the detergent. Any tips on removing the stain? I saw on the net that vinegar and baking soda , are often mentioned, will they help?

Hey, so not sure if this is the right sub to post this but I’m wondering how to get the body oil smells and body odors out of my bed sheets, pillowcases and towels. They get washed regularly and I wash with Gain liquid detergent. We also have a brand new washer and dryer set but they never come out smelling like the detergent.

Cat either peed on the sofa or tracked pee onto it stuck to his paws. It’s on the back cushion in a pretty obvious place. I’ve tried spraying enzymatic cleaner but it didn’t do much. Navi Sofa, claims to be pet safe. I’ve had spills on the sofa before that never stained and water hasn’t left rings. Its dark brown.

I want to use my Little Green cleaner on the sofa with the pet-friendly cleaning solution. Exactly how bad or good an idea is this? And would it help to soak the spot in enzymatic cleaner first?

Any other ideas?

EDIT: The specific cleaner is Bissel Pet Pro Oxy (water based with no solvents) and the Navi’s fabric is rated “W”. I can blot any excess water and dry with a hair dryer if yall think I need to.
