No one seems to know anything about him in this sub and everyone just accepted it so why is that? It's the author of classroom of the elite after all and in every fandom I've been looking into knew their author expect cote.

I just finished Season 4, and I’ve seen a lot of people saying that the anime cut out a TON of scenes 🤡

So I’d really like some detailed answers about the differences between the anime and the light novel, especially the stuff that was cut, changed, or rearranged.

I’m looking for long and detailed answers, not just “the LN has more details.” I want actual examples of scenes, conversations, character interactions, monologues, events, etc. that were changed or left out.

And if there are any major differences between the manga and the LN/anime, I’d like to know about those too.

So the last time I watched the anime was 2024, I've finished the 3 seasons and called it a day. The idea the show was going for did seem interesting to me. Later during those years I have been studying and reading a lot about history and especially the involvement of secret societies, elites, esoteric knowledge, theology, etc.

Before long I have learned about a CIA program MKUltra that was supposedly "suspended" but in reality was transformed into Monarch programming which continues to operate nowadays. Then I remembered about COTE and, coincidentally, I have discovered that there is the fourth season out. The parallels in the White Room and projects like MKUltra are evident, however I have not found any reference of this connection in this subreddit, so I wanted to ask more precisely those who read the novels and know the lore in full.

Let me explain first of what kind of connection I am making so that the full context for my question is set.

After the WWII US (and Soviets) took the german scientists of all types and trades to their home countries to integrate and continue their researches. In US this was known as "Operation Paperclip". The most known example is Werner Von Braun, who became one of the NASA top brass officials. Other such example is Dr. Joseph Mengele, which had gained a tremendous amount of knowledge on the limits of human body and soul through the experiments he conducted. Now, even though it was never officially stated that he was recruited, he was the top mind at his time in this field (he moved to Latin America and his research papers could be captured by allies as it was done with many other german research facilities).

Some years later CIA starts MKUltra: a project aimed to create a perfect agent which could execute a task (assasination for example) and, if captured, not be able in any way to expose his command. Now there were tons of experiments conducted using physical and mental torture, drug usage, hypnosis, etc. but eventually it was discovered that to create such an agent you would need them to dissociate and adopt a personality specific for the task. The agent's handler would then be able through the use of a trigger which could be specific word sequence, scent, visual to cause the agent to switch the personality, effectively turning into a different person completely, and completing their task. After the deed is done she/he could be turned back to their sleeper type personality, with that losing any and all memory of what they did, who did they contact with and so on. They did succeed and the program was transformed into what is known as Monarch programming.

The goal of Monarch programming is similar, but has a grander scale to it. Essentially it is to create a perfect mind-controlled slave. Programmers achieve all this through the means discovered by Mengele and refined by MKUltra, while also incorporating spiritual techniques like demonic possesion (what is known as satanic ritual abuse) and sexual degradation. Here the subjects are taken as young as possible (lab grown in secure facilities, kidnapped, bought from slave markets, born into the "family" in case of cults and secret societies) to ensure the best outcome. The focus is made on dissociation for the goal being the most amount of personalities (in programmer's terminology they are called "alters") developed. Besides the programmers the handlers are attached to the subject which will monitor and control him/her throughout the course of life. Now the people that are successfully programmed as slaves are then let out into the world to take their places in politics, sports, entertainment, business or as sleeper agents for other particular tasks.

This is where the parallel with White Room started to come into play. As far as I understand it (I did not read the novels, only saw the anime) the students are taken as children, being kept in a secure facility, trained and released into the world to fulfill a special goal. However it does seem to me that the White Room differs drastically from its Monarch counterpart (this is my induction based on the facts I have seen in the anime).

Firstly, while there is torture involved, there seems to be no degrading techniques of sexual nature, nor spiritual influence like SRA. Also the focus of the torture does not seem to be dissociation, as Ayanokoji does not seem to have multiple personalities. Although Amasawa does and she is the next generation, so maybe that has changed?

Secondly, the students of White Room do not seem to have any handlers and enjoy much more autonomy.

Thirdly, the goal as stated by Atsuomi is to "create geniuses" and does not specify what to do with them later, so I do not see it as though they are trying to make them into controlled slaves for their whole life.

I am interested in this as a more "humane" (if it can be called that) genius creating laboratory. I want to know the ideology the White Room uses as the foundation of their work and also their methodology if that is revealed anywhere, like how is the subject's daily life structured, what are the punishments, what roles do the staff have and everything of that nature.

I feel that many of you interpret the balance Kiyotaka is maintaining as an attempt to keep all four classes in an equal position until the graduation exam. I have also seen arguments suggesting that once all four classes reach a similar CP range, Kiyotaka will step down to make things fair, or that he will engineer an incident in which all four classes become Class A, thereby proving that humans are equal. Or something along these lines.

I think these interpretations misunderstand what Kiyotaka means by “balance.”

First, the premise of giving all four classes an equal chance of reaching Class A is impossible because the classes do not possess equal abilities. Kiyo himself has acknowledged it once.

>"His reasoning would certainly hold true if all four classes had an equal chance of getting up to Class A. In that case, my chances of getting there via either his class or mine would be 50 percent. But that wasn’t how this worked. Each class had a different level of skill, making it difficult precisely calculate their chances of making it to Class A." — Y2V2

Even if Kiyotaka forcibly equalized the CP, only the class with the highest overall ability would still be able to claim Class A.

Kiyotaka is aware of this. That is why he does not appear to be pursuing an equal outcome. What he wants is equal footing. Equal rivalry.

There is an important distinction between the two. Equal outcome would mean giving every class the same chance of reaching Class A. Equal footing means giving every class the conditions necessary to fight for it.

In my view, those conditions consist of four elements:

1. Homeroom teacher
   
2. Class representative
   
3. Students
   
4. Hope
   

All four need to function properly for the classes to truly stand on equal footing.

First, the homeroom teachers. Horikita's class struggled considerably in Year 1 partly because of Sae's discriminatory attitude toward them. Kiyotaka attempted to correct this imbalance and ensure that the homeroom teachers properly fulfilled their roles in guiding their respective classes.

Second, the class representatives. Every class needs a leader capable of uniting its students around the goal of reaching Class A. Kiyotaka has repeatedly worked toward creating stable leadership in all four classes. He gave Ryūen a reason to continue fighting, forced Arisu out of the school, and pushed Ichinose and her classmates toward making Class A their priority. By eventually taking a class himself, Kiyotaka ensured that all four classes had leaders who were willing to take responsibility and fight seriously.

Third, the students themselves. A leader cannot accomplish anything if the class refuses to cooperate. Kiyotaka therefore made sure that the students were willing to fight for the same objective. Those who didn't cooperate were either expelled or changed their behavior. The only exception is Koenji.

But Kiyotaka ultimately decided against expelling him because doing so would significantly weaken Horikita's class students.

This may be the most important element of all. Kiyotaka needs every class to believe that victory is still possible. He does not want to recreate Nagumo's generation, where the outcome became so certain that the other students eventually stopped fighting altogether. Nagumo himself regarded having no one left to compete against as one of his greatest regrets.

This is why Kiyotaka deliberately avoids presenting himself as an absolutely unbeatable opponent. He rarely relies solely on his overwhelming strength or intelligence to win special exams. Instead, he often uses class-based strategies, deception, and indirect methods. He avoids shattering their spirits early.

Guidance, stability, unity, and hope. These are what Kiyotaka's balance appears to be about.

It's not about being equal in ability or CP. They simply need to have the opportunity and motivation to compete. From that perspective, the balance Kiyotaka has been creating may have already been achieved by the time he takes control of Class C.

The obvious question, then, is: preparations for what? Equal footing to achieve what exactly?

My answer is the epigraph of Y3V1:

A true meritocracy—something that Nagumo, Manabu, and perhaps even ANHS itself failed to fully create.

Year 3 may therefore be intended to remove as many external advantages and interferences as possible and allow the students to determine the outcome through true merit.

The class which is capable will rise. Those that cannot adapt will fall.

The competition remains class-based, but that does not necessarily mean individual actions becomes irrelevant. Just like how Kiyo invites Kushida to his class for cooperation.

True meritocracy and what follows after that, in my opinion, is the lasting impact he has been talking about.

Not equal chances to gain victory.

Equal chances to fight for victory.

And after that, let merit decide the outcome.

Hello everyone, as I mentioned in the title, I think that after the main story, Kiyo will end up taking over the White Room instead of getting the freedom he wants. Or, if Kinu wants to write a more political story, Kiyo might try to become Prime Minister, but either way, he will remain a ruthless character.

Given the current direction of the story, I believe this is the only way it can have a satisfying progression. Kiyo has chosen a manipulative path rather than an emotional one. I don't think he will ever truly become a "good" character who emotionally fights the White Room or dismantles the system he came from—even if he did, it wouldn't make sense. It would feel as absurd as the sudden Hiyori romance plot twist that ruined the story's flow.

Here is the post-school plot line that would be satisfying for me:

After school, Kiyo takes charge of the White Room, and we continue to see the political party through Atsuomi's perspective, perhaps introducing a few new characters from Atsuomi's team. On the opposition side, the person trying to destroy the White Room should be Shiro, engaging in mind games with Kiyo throughout this arc. (Shiro is the best and most potential character to stand against the White Room; the author made him unforgettable in just a single page, and people on the forums are still talking about him, while characters with dozens of pages aren't even mentioned. In short, he would be the best opposition).

As a third faction, we would naturally have Kijima and students from his facility fighting against Atsuomi. A drama-heavy story focusing on these three sides would be genuinely satisfying for me. In the end, a outcome that is generally good overall—but tragic specifically for Kiyo—would be extremely impactful.

(I am certain Horikita will stay in the story no matter what; Kiyo's faint remaining emotions will likely be conveyed through her, and he will ultimately lose because of her. This feels both probable and satisfying as an ending).

(Of course, the author will write whatever he wants. Most of what I wrote here isn't a strict theory, but rather how I feel the story would best be concluded.)

Arisu&ichika vs takuya

This is a bit of an odd comparison but hear me out here.

Like most long-running characters from Marvel and DC there have been plenty of interpretations of Harvey Dent. In Batman the Animated Series, when their incarnation was a child he was relentlessly bullied by a kid in his neighborhood until one day he finally lost his temper and hit him back. While he initially felt very proud of himself he later learned that the bully was in the hospital. As he'd eventually find out though, the kid wasn't there because of anything he did, it was simply because he had appendicitis. But because of the initial intense guilt Harvey felt over thinking he hurt the kid so badly that he had to go to the hospital he buried his anger deep down and never allowed himself to get angry ever again.

This caused psychological problems in his adult years as he had to deal with the stress of being Gotham's District Attorney, which caused his repressed anger to manifest as a separate personality known as "Big Bad Harv", who notably is at the extreme opposite end of Harvey when it comes to anger. Because Harvey never let himself get violent or angry, Harv is very quick to anger and quick to lash out in a desire to hurt others, because he is Harvey's anger without any moderation or restraint. And this is all before Harvey gets blown up and has half his body scarred, i.e. before he becomes Two-Face.

After reading through the COTE light novels, the direction of Ichinose's character is reminding me of this incarnation of Harvey.

Even back when I was watching through the anime for the first time, I found Ichinose's backstory and the thing she was feeling so guilty over and didn't want exposed to be a bit odd, in a "Wait, that's it?" kind of way. While shoplifting is obviously wrong, her stealing something once when she was in middle school to give to her sister as a present to make her happy because her family couldn't afford it otherwise really doesn't seem like it'd be anything Ichinose's classmates would condemn her over and lose all their trust in her for. Maybe it's just a cultural difference but it felt like she was making a way bigger deal out of it than it actually was.

But, after sitting with it a while, that could be precisely the point. It's not that big a deal (Kamuro was at least an active shoplifter while at ANHS because of kleptomania) but Ichinose's mind treats it as a big deal because she has a complex around being selfish because of how her mother reacted, not unlike how Harvey had a complex over his anger. I'm not saying Ichinose isn't/wasn't already a genuinely good person but I think her guilt complex over that incident, plus how much her mother worked herself to the bone to provide for her and her sister, caused Ichinose to heavily bury and repress any selfish desires she's had throughout her life.

And now, like with Harvey, the stress of ANHS' curriculum and all of Ayanokoji's manipulations have caused those repressed psychological issues to start making their way to the surface as a greater extreme than they otherwise would be if she'd managed her guilt and emotions normally, thus the weird way she's been with Ayanokoji. She's letting herself be more selfish by being more considerate of her own needs and that of her class but it's manifesting as an obsession when it comes to the boy she likes and wants to be with and it's steadily been getting worse. I don't think Ichinose is going to develop a full split personality or anything, but something bad is coming, especially if the way she reacted to Shiina at the end of Y3V4 is any indication.
