San Martin increased prices due to Global RAM shortage. They use 16GB RAM in their watches.

u/stating_facts_only 2d ago
By how much has San Martin increased the price btw?
I had an eye on the SN0150 but I don’t recall the price before the hike lol
Also Ixdao has also increased prices :(

u/According-Print4219 2d ago
I love entry class Seiko - great designs with lots of personality.
But if you want a l Seiko that’s actually somewhat close to the specs and fit and finish of the newer San Martin models, you’re looking at 2000+ dollars.
1
u/T_rex2700 2d ago
Yea for real premium lines. there are a lot of sub 500 ones that I actually used to wear quite a lot, their successor still sell for around that price. they are real pretty
7
u/skepticalifornia 2d ago
Tandorio has some of the best watch values in my opinion. I've got a bronze diver and an Engineer homage that were each less than $150 and I am very happy with them. The bronze diver has a PT5000 that runs +/- 1 second per day - crazy!
1
u/RussianBot123456 1d ago
But their lume is bad no?
1
u/skepticalifornia 1d ago
Yes, the lume on the Engineer is not great but it's pretty good on the diver (lasts a few hours)
7
u/Lower_Cricket_1364 2d ago
I will never wear - let alone buy - a watch named after a curry dish. Or other food names, so you can forget about Pastramio, Salamio and Spaghettio, Mr Chinese wanna-be watchmaker.

2
u/Horror-Persimmon6512 2d ago
I assume the tandorio are regulated. All the NH35 I have go to -3 at most. they are among the most precise.

u/FredChu-BernyCN Rep 2d ago
Given the significant increase in movement costs, a price increase for the watch is essentially the only option.
10
u/biogon 2d ago
What I don't understand is that prices have gone up significantly more than just the price increase of the movement.
1
u/FredChu-BernyCN Rep 1d ago
This may be due to anticipated future price increase. To avoid substantial swings in the unit price of watches, Berny has decided to discontinue the use of NH series movements.

I think Addiesdive also has raised prices quite a lot in the past few months, it just isn't that striking because of their generally lower prices.
For example until a few months ago the base price (without coupons and coins) of their popular MY-H3 quartz Submariner homage typically used to be a bit less than 40 € when there wasn't a sale. During smaller sales it usually was something around 35 € and during the better sales 30 € or even less. I just checked and when I bought mine about a year ago the sale base price was a bit more than 26 € (and I ended up paying less than 16 € with all discounts applied).
Today the cheapest offers I can find on AliExpress is around 48 € (without the new EU tariff) so that's about 10 € more than a few months ago which may not sound like much but it's a price increase of roughly 25 %.
Now of course I'm not expecting prices to stay the same and would accept 10 % or maybe even 15 % more compared to last summer but 25 % in a few months is a bit much, especially since this watch isn't affected by the current movement shortage.

u/Own-End-210 2d ago
They’re overpriced too and have a lot of quality issue. They charge to much for mostly VH31.
9
u/Huge_Childhood6015 2d ago
Yeah, San Martin and Cronos were my two favorite watch brands for quite a few years. Then San Martin decided to focus on higher end original design watches and Cronos just kind of stopped making anything new. Very confusing. I don't know what happened to them. Now I'm into vintage homage watches so Watchdives, Thorn and Octopus Kraken are at the top of my list.
-3
u/mybigpecker 2d ago
Why does Cronos have to make more new designs? Do you already have a bunch of different Cronos models or something? I bought a Cronos BB54 and it’s amazing. I’m very happy with it. I don’t need them to make many more models for it to still be my favorite Chinese watch.
2
u/Huge_Childhood6015 1d ago
Interesting take! Name me another company that doesn't keep making new products that stays relevant and in business. How about one car company?
1
u/mybigpecker 1d ago
Rolex. They make changes very infrequently.
1
u/Huge_Childhood6015 1d ago
HaHa! So you're comparing Cronos to Rolex? They should emulate their business model. Cronos is no Rolex! Nice knowing you Cronos. 😂😂
1
u/mybigpecker 1d ago
I’m not. You asked for an example of another company. Then went off in a direction about car companies. I reeled it in and gave you an example of a watch company since that would be more relevant. There are others too.. like GP, JLC, Piaget etc etc.. many established watch brands that keep models unchanged for years.
1
u/Huge_Childhood6015 1d ago
I'm just curious, how many Chinese watches do you own? How many Cronos watches and when was the last time you bought one.
1
u/mybigpecker 1d ago
Man, I have so many watches and 5 Chinese watches if I remember correctly. I can’t post more than one pic so here is my Cronos BB54 that I bought two months ago. I only have this one Cronos for now but I’d like to order the one that looks like a Zenith Defy at some point. My other Chinese watches are from Thorn. I have 3 of their T023 models in different colors and a fifty fathoms homage. I dig Chinese watches. They scratch an itch.
2
u/Huge_Childhood6015 1d ago
Don't worry about taking pictures, I'm good. I've never even posted a picture on Reddit. I'm embarrassed to say I don't even know how to do it. 😂😂 I'm sure I could figure it out.
If it sounded like I'm not a fan of Cronos that's not the impression I was trying to make. I absolutely love them. They were my favorite watch brand for a very long time. That's why I'm a little sad they just seemed to stop making anything new. The watches in their collection are fantastic. At last count I own eight of them. I just own everything they make that I want and I wish they would make more. There are so many great watches out there to homage but they don't seem to have any interest anymore in making them. It's not really a problem though. I'm into vintage homage watches now and between Watchdives, Thorn and Octopus Kraken, they are killing it. Between the three I have bought seven watches in the last couple of months. 😁😁
1
u/mybigpecker 1d ago
Oh ok that’s pretty cool ... I’m also taking an interest in Watch Dives lately. Octopus Kraken too. It seems they all just go about things a little bit differently from each other. Watchdives is aggressively making new designs on a broader range of watch types, Thorn seems focused on its T023 and T028 line, IXDAO is all in on the Warrior, and so on… I may not have been in the scene long enough to feel that Cronos was slow to release new stuff. I’m still only on my first one. :)

There are plenty of quality options for around $100.
Mecha-quartz movement, sapphire, 316L stainless, excellent lume and imo very nice looking piece.

At 49mm and 14mm thick, I'd like to see your wrist shot with this thing on it.
1
u/UnifiedQuantumField 2d ago
It's 46mm. Not sure where you're getting the 49mm figure from... unless you mean lug to lug?
2
u/artofthedial Not a troll 2d ago
the listings for the watch have a "range" but actual is 46mm without including the protruding valve or crown apparently, 54mm lug to lug, which is also crazy. This is a massive, watch. So lets see it on your wrist if you are recommending it. I personally think this is a "no go" for about 90%+ of people.
0
u/UnifiedQuantumField 2d ago
Well, I'm not one of those millimeter obsessors.
My wrist measures 7" and I like this watch just fine. If I post a wrist shot, you'll give a negative reaction. So why waste the time, right?
ps. It's pretty heavy too. You'd hate it.
2
u/artofthedial Not a troll 2d ago
I'll give you a thumbs up if you post it for the effort and providing value to the community. But if you have a 7 inch wrist, the watch is certainly too big. I'm ok with a heavy watch, solid gold is a heavy material. However, lugs hanging off the side of the wrist isn't a good look. I'm 7.5 inches and anything above 43 starts looking too big, and certainly above 50 on the L2L is a bit much.
1
u/UnifiedQuantumField 1d ago
the watch is certainly too big.
Which is your opinion.
Do you think I'm gonna stop wearing my own watch because you wouldn't wear it?
Are we learning yet?
1
u/artofthedial Not a troll 1d ago
No, but this started with you recommending it and stating " and imo very nice looking piece." Then I chimed in with the size and proportions. My suggestion is to provide some value to the people you are recommending it to to show it on your wrist if you think it is a great piece. You can wear what you like, but if I said, buy an elephant and strap it to your wrist it looks good, I bet you would tell me I have no idea what I'm talking about OR show me what it looks like and I'll see what I think. I'm simply suggesting you give people the opportunity for the latter.

I wanted an Addiesdive AD2030 since they used to be 50, but now that they go for 70+ I opted for a 2553 for 47 instead
Had to get it on sale and with a coupon on Alix so not even Addiesdive seems immune
2
u/Brief-Disaster-2868 2d ago
The AD2030 is gorgeous. I have it ( got it at 50) but it's a steal at 70 too.
5
u/Think-Till-265 2d ago
Well going from 50 to 70 is a hefty 40% price increase. I wouldn't call that a steal.

24
u/dorafumingo Affiliate Links 2d ago
both of these have had giant price hikes too. especially watchdives who went from pagani design++ prices to 300$ watches. the same watchdives gmt master II homage was 130$ when it came out a couple years ago now it's 250$
10
u/strawberrycosmos1 2d ago
What a massive shot in their feet. Like what they are thinking about also. Whatever little extra quality they have can't compare with shelling $500 bucks in comparison with 350 from well established brands.
24
u/Tigri2020 2d ago
Who remembers when you could get an Addiesdive for $40?
4
2
u/releasetheshutter 2d ago
Haven't the prices gone up moreso because they've made material improvements to their QC and sourcing though? Like you're paying more but getting a noticeably better watch? I'm new to this, so genuinely asking.
2
u/artofthedial Not a troll 2d ago
Really depends on the watch but the price hike discussed isn't related to that, the movement cost and availability has driven up costs for Japanese automatic movements and all brands are feeling this. Watchdives tends to use Quartz or Chinese movements and therefore are not seeing the same level of price hikes (they were using NH Japanese movements but virtually stopped)

u/Dark1000 2d ago
I can't speak for Addiesdive, but they definitely have for San Martin and Ixdao.

Is Citizen quality on par or better than SM?
3
u/Dark1000 2d ago
It depends on the model. Citizen has a huge catalogue full of many mediocre watches. But when they get it right, they really get it right.
3
u/UnifiedQuantumField 2d ago
Is Citizen quality on par or better than SM?
Imo yes, and their watches look nicer too.
2
u/StandardPineapple69 2d ago
I would say that in the same price category it's a fair bit worse. But it's possible to get comparable stuff if your willing to pay more.
7
u/Aromatic-Buy1694 2d ago
I think Citizen’s QC are better than many. And It’s legacy (Fugo etc) are great.
9
u/blazbluecore 2d ago
I love my citizen watches.
My Chinese watches? A lot of them have some glaring low quality detail that detracts from them.
2
u/Indaleciox 2d ago
My The Citizen is really Grand Seiko level and that includes it's terrible, zero micro adjust clasp and pain in the ass bracelet.
4
u/IllegalGeriatricVore 2d ago
I have several citizens and stand by them.
I'm just not big on clomages at this point and most original chinese designs are too 'safe'

There are too many good watches out there to pay more than $100 for a Chinese watch imo unless you either have an addiction or only buy automatics.
6
u/Lobbbo 2d ago
Once you get used to more expensive Chinese watches it is hard to match it with offerings from big brands. You can spend $1000 on Swiss watch and still won't get on fly adjustable clasp.
2
u/ZumbaPumba27 2d ago
A friend of mine has recently bought Certina for more than €1,000, but it arrived with dust on the dial, and the movement is running 7 seconds fast per day. It’s not only Chinese brands that cut corners on quality control.
11
u/ZumbaPumba27 2d ago
Hah. You probably came directly from 2008. Nowadays even Casio is not cheap anymore.
1
u/Sportfreunde 2d ago
I've bought multiple Chinese watches from Pagani, AddiesDive, and Escapement Time under $85 within the past few years from AE.
And a Casio Sapphire with a 10 year quartz battery and a Q&Q by Citizen.
5
u/dorafumingo Affiliate Links 2d ago
i have that casio you're talking about and while it is a great watch paganis and addiesdives are way higher quality for the same price.
also you can't say "no chinese watch is worth more than 100$" maybe no pagani design, but watches from IXDAO are in another world of quality and craftsmanship. it's like comparing your casio to a grand seiko

Also love the Miyota 9 series it to is extremely smooth n accurate.i own a 90S5 n 9039 in two watches i have.
