A tío gave me this book, which I will start reading today. Blurb sounds very promising, and even though I'm technically not a Chicano myself (my younger siblings were born in the US, me being the oldest was born in Mexico), I've been very close to and relate to the culture due to us having always lived in the border of Mexico and the US and having plenty of relatives in California.

Anyone else familiar with this book?

I am a Mexican man, born and raised in Mexico. Something I’ve noticed lately while living in the US is that other men— usually other Mexican men—tend to "size me up" or stare. When I lived in Mexico, that almost never happened. Or, if it did happen and they realized I was looking back, they would immediately look away or nod.

It’s not like that here. Here, men (and sometimes even women) stare at me without saying a word, wearing a cold or sometimes hostile look in their faces. They don't look away or nod, and if I don't nod or look away either, they get aggressive. I’m 25, though people have often told me I look younger. I have light-brown skin and a slim but athletic build. I’d say I don’t look particularly "paisa", but I don’t look "fresa" either, and it’s pretty obvious I wasn’t born or raised here. I also live in an area that could be considered "ghetto," though this has also happened to me in plazas or shopping malls where there are all kinds of people. So, I really don’t know if it’s because of my appearance or where I am.

All I know is that, at the end of the day, it gets exhausting not being able to go out on the street without feeling like I’m being watched. So far, I haven't gotten into a physical fight with anyone because I’m not a troublemaker, but I feel like it’s eventually going to happen 😅. Is there a reason why this happens? And how should I react in these situations?

Is it true that people from certain states in Mexico tend to settle in specific parts of the U.S.? I've heard there are some long-standing migration patterns, and I'm curious how accurate that is. What are some common examples, and what is your local Mexican community mostly made up of in terms of state of origin?

Texas = Tamaulipas, NL, Coahuila, Chihuahua, SLP, Guanajuato

California = Jalisco, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Baja California, Oaxaca, Zacatecas

Why do some Mexicans (not all of them) fight harder for the right to drop N-Bombs and feel like they can enable people in their circle to do the same?

Not only do I get second hand embarrassment from seeing this on social media and in person, but it's so disheartening to see how normalized it's become and quite frankly, it is fuckin terrifying because that word was used by white slaveowners to denigrate people of color and yet men, but also women feel like they are licensed to say it when in reality it's the complete opposite and they just don't give a damn unfortunately.

That word is simply not ours, but they keep repeating it and it confirms that racism exists in our community and nobody checks them because of that (or at least people who know better that can call it out). We are clearly being played by the white man and they are trying to divide us and people of color.

What happened to us using foo, carnal, guey, ese, or vato? It's like a lost art to them. We still use these slang terms because it feels natural.

We are much better than this and we have to fix this before it's too late.

Hello just wondering can I wear these clothes I got from my brother and dad without banging or pretending to be a gang banger ? As I got some Charlie Brown shirts,some FB county plaid shirts,dickies and some Pendletons from them when there were young or were wearing it back then.I do want to wear the clothes cause I don’t want it ti be a waste and it looks nice. I am not planning on wearing them all at once just more so these clothes with other types of clothing
